You mostly never only leech torrents. The technology requires that data is shared by every persom that downloads the same file. That's the angle that they fuck you from: distribution of stuff you do not own and have no distribution rights to

What happens?

you can get a lawsuit over "leeching" movies via torrents

@ janz
Yeah, I think rarely. But your mileage will perhaps vary due to the type of music and quality.

I don't mean rarely as in "don't worry, they'll never get you". So I should probably concede that it's perhaps a poor choice of words.

Then I get it. If there actually is a small chance you can get caught, id use VPN myself. Im guessing there must be millions of people using torrents in Germany, so its pretty must a lost war in the end... just like the war on drugs

My primary private tracker is torrentbytes, it has SSL download option Smile

Germany has always been the #1 anti-piracy country in Europe. Back in the Amiga days (~1990) I got a letter from a fellow group member in Germany who told me about a raid where a whole bunch of people (teens and above) were rounded up, everything tech was confiscated and the "pirates" were dealt with rather harshly (fines, stuck in the police anti-theft registry etc.).

Have people in Germany been fined just for leeching torrents? Here in Norway there have only been a few cases where uploaders/or the person who added the torrent to the site have been fined. It was even unclear if popcorn time was legal here or not, while in other countries it actually got consequences for the users.

I got a nice letter ~1 year ago from a Warner Bro laywer, for torrenting one episode of Shameless.

Since that i use a VPN for everything, and also don't really use torrents anymore.
Only sometimes on a private porn tracker.

Each illegal movie costs about €854.- !!!!!! FOR WHAT? For watching Popcorn time ONLINE.

I think we watched like 5 movies during the break, so it's around the €4200,-

Are you sure those are even legal? There is a company like that in Finland that sends threat letters that are just plain bullshit, demanding similar amounts of money from people.

It's legal, that's how the law works in the country. And you are not advised to ignore these letters.

Sometimes you can send a letter you download from the internet that stops them from pursuing the matter any further but that doesn't always work. Others pay a lawyer (hundreds of euros, but hey, better to pay 400 euros to a lawyer than a 800 euro fine, right?) to do the same procedure with the letter and hope because a legal firm will be behind it that it will work.

Doing absolutely nothing is not suggested, sure, some times they won't take you to court, but others they will and you don't want that to happen because it can only mean you will pay even more money.

You can also negotiate with them and explain you are just a student from another country and cannot find the 1200 euros they require from you, in which case they do you a favor of fining you with "only" 600 euros because of how kind and understanding they are...

Or you can pay for a VPN and have nothing to worry about..

I also live in germany and I use a Seedbox with some private trackers, then transfer the files from the Seedbox to my PC via an SFTP connection.
It's safe this way and the only way I would touch a torrent in germany.

5'ish € a month can get you a seedbox these days, I'd say that is an insane value you'll get in return. It will suffice for most people.

You would last about 5 mins on any decent tracker that way

so why are all my accounts since 10 years active? Razz you need to code that stuff yourself and not use common fake versions and just program it that it doenst spoof the upload when no peers besides the seeders are connected and randomize the ratio value from 0,7-1,9 an you are fine Razz

I am still sticking to usenet. People keep talking how it's all gone to shit, but it seems to work fine for me so far.

Granted, it's not a free solution, but I consider it a premium "streaming" service for my movie and TV needs Very Happy

@shoshomiga: those times are long gone. it wouldnt even come to a court decision in such case i think. they cant proof you uploaded something and your ip alone isnt a proof, you dont even need lawyer for that. just reply to the letter they send to you that they can fuck off cause they cant proof if it and never sign any cease and desist or admit you downloaded something. they wont bring it to court cause they know it wont succeed (and iirc they shut down a few law estates which send out massive amounts of warnings to users)

That's complete bullshit though.
I got a letter myself from some lawyers. And besides the IP they (have to) write down which file i shared at which date and time.

And if you would do a little research, then you would know that your method will in most cases just give you much more problems.
