The movie is enjoyable enough, and I've got friends who've said its better than The Matrix,
but I can't see that myself, as said by Mutantius enjoy the movie,
but don't be disappointed if its not a Matrix beater.

Action wise - Matrix is way better!
Visual style - Matrix and Equilibrium are almost at the same level... dark atmosphere, grainy situations and a lot of stylized action. (Dark city ) but Matrix goes higher.
Story wise - Matrix is WAY better
Acting wise - comparing Christian Bale to Keanu is like comparing Sean Penn to Ben Affleck so it goes to Equilibrium
Both movies are very different and both are very good action flicks.
Those who say it’s better than Matrix have some right since it does have some action packed scenes! Those who say Matrix is better are also right since Matrix, though said but not proven, has developed this grainy, dark theme and popularized gun combat. But the thing Equilibrium lacks that Matrix doesn’t is style. Matrix is amazing. I mean it is a lot better than Equilibrium when you look at style. It’s a one hit wonder. When you look at Equilibrium you’re looking at batman forever. May have some ‘decent’ acting, story, some hot actors/actresses and some action scenes but it doesn’t really have the same feel the ‘original’ one had.
Once again both movies are very good. If you liked Matrix you’ll like this. If you loathed the Matrix for its lack of imagination then you will hate Equilibrium. Though it is a very nice take on civilization.
Matrix is a good movie to compare with dark city. Similar story line. Similar atmosphere. Better acting! And very amazing visual. I recommend dark city if you loved the Matrix and/or Equilibrium
There goes my very first post from my week or so long ‘mental rest’ and if it goes very well it may be my very last post. Who knows… someone may still have an itchy ban finger

Its a good movie and worth buying.
Compairing it to The Matrix.. The Matrix wins.
compairing it to The matrix Trilogy and equalibrium wins.

You can't compare a movie that looks like it was a sci fi made for tv movie against a large budgeted movie like the matrix. Equilibrium is an interesting concept, and for it's budget it does look ok, but it's not nearly as high caliber as the matrix In visuals, sound, acting (he's more of a stiff wooden board than keanu give me a break), plot and so on....

Yes matrix has better action crap but Equilibrium got a deeper story (if u know what i mean...)
Someone said EQI looks like a TV Movie ? Well ok, w/e u say ...
The acting was a LOT better in EQI than in Matrix. (Bale pwnz, See Machinist)
If I could get 1 dvd and i had to choose between Mat or Equi, i'd take Equil.
About Hitman: Movie (2007)
Vin Diesel is a hardcore gamer, and absolutely loves the Hitman series. For that reason I have faith that he wont destroy the movie.
Response: Well, Uwe Boll probably loved the Alone in the Dark games.

Both movies are great but I like Matrix more because of the action and the story, still Equilibrium is a very good movie.

Equilibrium is a B-movie. Low budget in every way, even the story. Enjoyable to watch one time, but certainly not worth spending money on. That's my opinion.

You can't understand how people compare Equilibrium with the Matrix?!?
The Matrix is about breaking free from a reality that isn't real.
Equilibrium is about breaking free from a system that isn't working.
The Matrix is about Neo, who discovers the unreal world he's living in, through a person he's heard about, Trinity, who is part of a rebel movement, someone who wants to show him there's something... better, that you get to by taking a pill.
Equilibrium is about Christian Bale's character who has a friend who stops "taking the anti-emotional pill" and gets to experience this new, better world. After this incident he starts doing so himself, and discovers there's an entire rebel movement, underground, that wants to be free.
In the Matrix, Neo takes the chance to become part of this out of the will to experience, when he has done so, his old reality becomes an enemy of his new one.
In Equilibrium, Bale's character was part of a system who hunted dissidents, this movement now has become his enemy, and he has to fight against it.
In both movies, the main characters have supernatural powers which they've obtained from "training".
In both movies, the main characters discover that "the seemingly better life" really isn't. They live in a low-down world of grit and grey. And it is better, the taste sweeter.
In both movies, people are USED for some fake megalomaniac's own purpose. In Matrix, it's the machines... in Equilibrium, it's "Big Brother" (á la Orson Welles).
In the end, the rebels win, hoo-raah!
Yeah, extremely different movies...
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

It is a pretty good movie. Can't really compare it with The Matrix.
Some say Christian Bale should have been in The Matrix instead.

Red Scorpion with Dolph Lundgren, he's a badass russian who fights farmer guys then becomes one of them and fight of the russian army and saves his new "people".
Quigley down under with Tom Selleck where he is a master rifleman hired to kill aboriginies down under, he later of course starts to help them and thus saving his new "people".
Dances with wolves only he doesn't "save" the world but he is an important figure in the natives life which he at first was kind of against.
Chronicles of Riddick, doesn't like anyone. End up fighting for the good guys and saving the universe.

You just spoiled bunch of movies for a lot of people! I hope you're happy!
Matrix is a rehash of the same old plot/plots like you said
Isn't that vampire vs. werewolf movie a lot like matrix? First he's a normal person then becomes this werewolf vampire thing and then saves the people
Dark City : also matrix like. A man breaks from the system and then fights it in the end becoming the anomaly that has to be destroyed for the system to continue functioning flawlessly. Does it happen? You seen the matrix... what do you think?
Hell even Pinocchio has it. A toy that lives in a fantasy world wants to become normal and live in the real world. So he breaks a bunch of rules here and then. Goes on a journey where he discovers him self and in the end becomes a member of the real world as a real boy. A very touching story.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.

Dark City was first IIRC, I also beleive the Matrix was heavely infoenced by it (so much so they even stole some of Dark Citys sets)
anyways, thats a great movie.
