There probably wont be either..
On another note: Ive noticed that if you dig a basement pit and then foundation around the outside at the top so you can put a stairs down into it the foundations dont make the floor option appear like in other sims right across the top
Anyone managed to floor/roof a basement ? example here..>
http://www.thesims2website.co.uk/index.php?page=tutorialsbasements
EDIT:Ah neat ive done it what it as I was digging it too deep it seems ..

PS: That screenshot looks like it's asking you to guess the odd one out: gold bars, gold fish... ha! The crystal ball! | The collector thingie only makes it easier, you can still find them without it all around in the woods. There are meteors as well, metal ores for smelting, etc. Once you have the gems just use them in your inverntory and send them for cutting (as for meteors, you can analize them but I haven't found any use for them besides placing them around the garden/selling them, and for ores, you can send them to be smelted just like gems, but they are still seemingly useless). The more stone you send, more cutting options become available. It took me quite a lot of them to reach the crystal ball cut and I'm still not sure if I have all of the methods. I still have to find one last gem-kind, then I'll be sure becasue one of the collector achievement is having all stones and all cutting methods.

from the looks of the discussion about this game, it must be pretty intense. I never heard anything like this in the previous SIMS games.

From what I know base Sims 2 was quite OK but the real gameplay changes came via the new possibilities added by some of the expansion packs (Not the item packs though, hehe.) and I guess most of them weren't discussed actively, now with Sims 3 a lot of the inovative features from those addons are already present in the standard game so there's a bit more discussion about extras like collecting jewelry and so on, at least that's how I've understood it.
(And not all of the S2 addons are present in S3 such as pets and vacation resorts but who knows what EA/Maxis will expand the game with.)

What do you find to be the best career in the game?
I've tried military, journalism and criminal, but from the three it was military i liked most.
Here is my take on the those three:
Spoiler: |
Journalism was a real chore.. even at level 10 you constantly need to work on articles and have work 4 days a week. It fits nicely with being a writer as you can spend the whole day in practice writing mode But that does not make up for the lousy topmost job offer.
Criminal i only played until level 9 - where my sim had a rather fatal thinkering accident. Dunno if it was the job or my sim being a cleptomaniac but the stuff she bought home every now and then was nice
military is the one i like most. It might not pay that well, but the hours are excellent. basically 3 days a week from level 4 up, and once you become an astronaut, it goes down to a single day every week. Obviously thats a whole day, but still.. you get the rest of the week to work on relationships, side activities, etc.
|
What are your experiences with the jobs you tried?

Another nice bug that she has is that all her needs are always maxed out! |
Small update on this: there are now two needs that go down - albeit very slowly - socialization and fun. I have an idea why this may be: she has only done actions that are somehow related to those two. Therefore they have triggered them to work normally. Other needs are still 100% after a week of in-game play; she hasn't slept once, hasn't eaten anything and when I jogged her from one side of the city to the other, her energy and hygiene levels were both full still.
So if you want to try and replicate the behavior (could be that it works with all special npc's that don't live in the town itself, but are 'spawned' so to speak whenever they're needed), just keep the sim away from everything that would trigger the related need - don't ever eat, sleep, shower etc... Socialization and fun are probably unavoidable unless you just want a slave worker.
Edit: And regarding careers: of course I've only tried the criminal career so far (and from it the Evil branch) but I'd have to say it's really sweet. After a few promotions I've never been arrested anymore, the only person you need to have relations with is your boss and the items that get added to your family inventory are really good for extra cash. At max. level of the evil branch you get to work 3 days a week for 5 hours, and it's very easy to get raises to your salary (mine's ~1k an hour atm).
Plus every now and then you get the work related opportunity to hold the world hostage, which always nets you a double salary raise.

I find it wierd that most of you are workoholics ingame, talking about lvl 10's in all kinds of careers, while i havent even reached lvl 10 in my main first career yet lol. Guess im busy doing other stuff in the game.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 RAM: 4gb Kingmax DDR2 800mhz Video: Asus GeForce 250GTS 1gb Sound: Asus Xonar.

Guess im busy doing other stuff in the game. | Compared to the previous sims, this game has ridicilously easy requirements for advancing: getting the green bar to the top.
Spending 2-3 days MAX at work on "working hard" mode gets you to the next level regardless of the "smiley-factors". My family's mother is the only one working (father is a writer and kid is only a part-time worker in the market). She's a super-secret-spy-agent. During my career I've never written a single report on anyone, only did a few skill levelups, and barely talked to my partner. The smilies were almost always on yellow (except for mood). I worked hard and got promoted almost every other day.
You don't have to worry about getting every single skill point necessary and maintaining a huge firend circle. Just worry about getting the green bar to the max.

Can you learn new book-genres etc?
Seems to be missing some, though that may just be for expansions and stuff.

You mean the game is missing some, or you are missing some? I've not seen any way to learn new genres, but you get a choice of about 6 anyway.

Well i haven't seen any genre with an expected royalty of 5 sim-money, i fully maxed my writing and challenges, just wondering if there were some hidden way to unlock genres because of that.
Also can you be a "feature"-writer for all genres or only one at a time?

There is a $$$$$ genre called Masterpiece. I jsut discovered it and have no feakin' idea what was the prerequisite. Maybe you need to keep contributing to the chosen genre, who knows.
But beware...it's a 2000 page long monstrosity...

I wrote one Masterpiece "My Life as a Sim" and it brings me over $7500 in royalties every week. Great stuff, but still TIME COSTLY to write >_>

Yeah i can't make masterpieces either, i wonder what the prerequisites are.
Edit: I can make a children's book in addition to that, weird.

Yeah, the masterpiece book is awesome, mine's bringing in over 10k a week all by itself. Guess it takes maybe 4'ish days of dedicated writing to finish one, but 60k is still a decent salary for that amount of work.

Another bug: don't buy those virtual reality thingies. Even if you take it off and sell it, it will still keep sending those annoying popups and messages.

Some genres seem to unlock after certain requirements are met. Not sure what tho.
What i know is that journalists can write articles - basically 70-80 page long books - and those give royalties the same way regular books do in addition to being job related opportunity goals.

Wait, you write one book and you get every week money for it? wtf! I bought a crappy partnership for this restaurant, payed 12,000! and just get 2100 per week. That sucks!
