this would rock in places that have high bandwidth speed (like south korea). i would love to play xbox360 or ps3 games on my pc through onlive.
i don't want to buy a xbox360 or ps3 consoles because i don't like having clutter around my dwelling. that's why i like buying games from digital download services (no boxes or discs to take up space). if i want to play a console/arcade game, i load up an pcsx2, mame, or dolphin. everything is done through my quad core pc -- movies, gaming, etc.
with onlive, i can play any game from any system on my pc with no real media to return or throw away. it's awesome. but if there is a hint of lag then it's a deal breaker.
i own two wd 1 tb hard drives. they're filled up with media and games (i use xbmc to playback the media; very slick tool). i plan to get another 2 tb hard drive soon as my current drives are almost maxed out (less than 1 gb left).

Shitty video quality, latency are big downsides, but the bigges one is, IMO, to complete a 20 hour game at 720p video stream would waste you approx 50GB of internet.

The thing with this whole concept is that it's always going to be a thing for the future, but by the time we get to the time it could be useful for a wider audience, technology already advanced enough that it will be obsolete.

I don't have any limits to my bandwith/data and i can pretty much reach my maximum 50Mb all the time as long as there isn't a bottleneck anywhere else on the network and i'm still pretty sure the connection isn't reliable enough to do what they are planning, unless they intend to just use turn based games or they have one of these dedicated server farms/servers at the edge of each town. Even then, there's going to be problems when you have people from all over the country/world connected in the same game.

5 mbit 8 hours a day a whole month is 550 gb. It's not that much.

how you can say this is rediculously stupid , is beyond me .
This will ( either onlive or some other varioation or company ) be a massive precence in the gaming industry in the future .
If they get the tech is right , its going to be huge cash cow , and not requiring upgrades to run the latest games will be a massive hook .
you will also then start to see game developers concentrating on creating games that are optimised for this type of thing
bury your heads in the sand all you like , but its comming
The only constant is change , adapt or die tbfh

It may and probably will work in the future, i doubt it will be popular though unless they do really fantastic job and invest shitload of money in their software and hardware |
Actually, the trend is for companies to impose bandwidth caps.
AT&T are trying it now in places.
Comcast finally released their cap number a while back and even here locally a new Fiber Optic company is moving in, but they also will have a bandwidth cap limit. If you are lucky enough to still have a provider that doesn't have a bandwidth limit, it is only a matter of time. Those providers have to buy their bandwidth from other companies and once enough people start using too much and causing the provider to pay out more to the 2nd company, you will see a cap imposed.

If this succeeds and millions of people start using it, won't the ISP's be pissed off? Imagine millions of people downloading at 5Mb/s for hours. And that's not even 1080p.

In the analasys on eurogamer he mentions that Piracy will be impossible, but if it's true that it's going to be an American only service then surely the usual retail channels will remain in europe, thus still allowing piracy to happen because people will still be able to get access to hard or digital copies of the games.
so at the moment it seems there is alot of factors that will go against this taking off as the next generation of software distribution. Besides I like the luxury of being able to download/pirate a game to try before I buy it.

It's meant to be worldwide, the beta is NA only. If it gets succesfull, they're planning on spreading it all around the world. They'll probably aim at Asia as teh main market.

Normal Ping would be one thing, we're talking about INPUT DELAY here. I.e. imagine you have a ping of 100ms, that means, you press a key, 100ms later it registers.. in a FPS (and i guess also Sport and racing games) this is = gg.
