Depends on your taste. Personally, I like it. I love jRPGs and this is no exception. The battle system is unique (but takes a while getting used to) and the storyline and audio is excellent. Definitely prefer the PC version of the 360, though the framerate issues aren't exactly squashed;

109fps average during benchmark, loaded trial and set to max settings and getting between 65-110 "world" but battle framerate is fucking appalling mostly. Setting Battle detail to highest causes massive frameloss during attacks (averaging around 50ish, but drops to TEENS sometimes. Absolutely unacceptabl.

My first 10 minutes into it and..

damn i forgot how gay the japanese are..
I had certain problems recognizing which person is male and which female...

I hate the main character... (i already can see how the marquise has a crush on him Laughing )

Also i 'love' games in which you must press X or B button... even if it's nothing like that having a keyboard...

last but not least- there is a total lack of voice over in the conversations- only at the movies.. One would thought that in a 12gb game there will be such things..

Tho it looks like an ok port, the navigating seems way too clunky..

Sabin (or anyone else): Care to list some of the more recent/good jRPG's for PC? Definitely not my favorite genre, but they're pretty damn good timewasters. Razz

jRPGs for the PC? In English? There's not many, bud. Not many at all Sad

"Grandia" 2 and "Magna Carta - Phantom of Avalanche" are the only two that immediately leap to mind.

Yep, I had a bit of that in the Trial too. Nowhere NEAR as bad as the 360, but definitely enough to be annoying (limitation, and drawback, of the UE3)

The "Reloaded" release will be finished in a few mins, so I'll install and test that.

The texture popup and framrate issues are mainly due to UE3, atleast that's what I've seen in most UE3 games.
Can anyone who has played theLost Oddysse compare this to tha one? I liked LO, but it was really boring at some points.

Same engine, same developer, different playstyle unfortunately. LO actually FELT like a polished game, though it had awful loading times, but TLR sometimes feels like a cheap mod for Unreal3 :-\

I'm playing LO atm and loading times are very quick when installed to hard drive. Speaking about comparison between LO and TLR, TLR is alot harder, but friend of mine who finished both of them liked them both very much. LO has better story.

Texture popoin issue in TLR PC is much smaller.

last JRPG I played was FF8
tried the demo of this thing but the lack of voice overs was a disappointment
for a 12GB game it really should have those, the witcher has much more content and every line is done by voice

why.. here's one: http://www.sophiehoulden.com/games/thelinearrpg/

it's short and funny and it's something of a distilled jrpg, everything stripped down to it's essence. it will take you a couple of mins to play through and i'm sure anyone who ever touched a jrpg will find everything instantly familiar. those who don't.. well, just consider that this is easier, funnier and smarter than most jrpgs Smile click it!

If you want stable fps you can enable frame rate limiter from within game settings.

I saw the fps going down to 10 in the first combat, after the cut-scene.

And I haven´t seen nothing on the screen that could make it go so low...

Same shit happened to me on the Trial version, mate. Game runs 70++ fps at all times, but dies in battles .. anywhere from 10-45, but with frequent stutters and drops to the low teens.

The only way I saw to change that was to lower the Battle Detail to Medium or Low.

Gah. I was hoping SE would have fixed something as GLARING as that before the retail release. Oh well, guess I'll stick to the 360 version.

=Edit=

Oh and is the Reloaded release even a legit retail copy? The two disks are nothing but multi-RARs with an EXe to automate the extraction process. No autorun, no info, nothing but multi-RARs and a crack folder.

Perhaps the particles uses PhysX?
(Demo used it but I can't say if it's actually hardware accelerated or only software mode, would explain the performance if both of you use ATI without a AGEIA PPU card or similar or perhaps ATI just need to work a bit with drivers for this title.)

Never dips below 45 FPS (avg is 60-70) with all maxed out even in the huge battles (like the first one). Buy Nvidia next time and stop whining.

LO was developed by Mistwalker (Blue Dragon their other game)
TLR was developed by Square Enix.
So, naturally, games are very different
But i agree with you LO is much better game, after you install it on HDD loading times dont annoy anymore

Jesus Christ this game is annoying. 20 minute long boring cutscenes that can't be skipped, terrible performance on AMD, "proper" use of mouse.

Confirmed...Just had to set antialiasing and anisotropic filtering in override mode+rename to bioshock, adding tlr.exe and overriding didn't work. Game looks much better without those square ladders Very Happy

Yea I think it is the physics during battles that is killing the game.

I have a dual core 4.4 ghz E8600 with 2x4870x2. During the first battle the cpu usage was at 99% whenever I saw the stuttering. All gfx settings maxed. Frequent stutters followed by silky smooth framerate, then stutters all of a sudden, repeat.

I bet it is the physx crap.
