I do believe that the complaints pertains to the lack of a tutorial that will hand you the keys to the game on a silver platter. Not actually read up on stuff and try and pursue knowledge yourself.
It is the most complex space sim, it's also the biggest space sim. It's also not friendly to newbies, by far it's made by the community for the community, this is proven by the assimilation of the XTM mod developers by Egosoft.
All the concerns the community voiced on the forums about the previous games have been seen to by the developers.
Theres many tutorials and guides written by the community and theres npc's in the game that'll teach you how to fly your ship, apart from that, most of the universe relies on discovery and making your own destiny.
Like for instance did you know that it's possible to build ships yourself thats not even buildable per default?, no you have to discover this and you have to figure stuff out yourself.
Theres even some of the best ships in the game just sitting in random sectors, hidden, waiting for you to find and use them.
Thats part of what makes it fun, actually using your head while playing not just pretty colors and explosions.
You have to think of the universe as a living and breathing universe, thus the missions don't take notice of your abilities, they just tell you what they want done and if you're up for it. Live and learn, trial and error.
It is a very rewarding game, but I can easily imagine it being a frustrating experience if you have the attentionspan of a 12 year old.
You wont find an "IWIN" button in this game eventhough you might've become accustomed to one in games like Freelancer, and if thats what you want I suggest you look elsewhere.

isnt a seamless universe? you are tied to cross the gates to travel?

yes it's a seamless universe, yes you have to go through gates.
Seamless here means that every sector is living even when you're not in it, this means there will be wars fought, trading is done, piracy is comitted. Even though you're maybe 20 sectors away.
This is why it's in sectors because this way you can have a "mini" virtual environment for each sector running thus saving you as much cpu power as possible even though it is quite demanding for the cpu to constantly calculate all the movements and per pixel based damage of all ships in the games universe.
Compared to 'any' other game this isn't possible, not even with Oblivion where the world is only "alive" 7 grids away from the player at any given time. Seamless in that example means low loading times, except when going inside. Here you have small loading time between sectors, you barely notice it on faster pc's.
The only thing close to how X3 works is Eve Online because there is various nodes calculating every system in the game, and also when you go from one node to another there, you go through a star gate.
X3 is quite revolutionary in this technical aspect that they've managed to compress all these sectors into a singular multi threaded process running both as client and "server" if you will
I would only expect someone like a german development studio to pull this kind of stunt off when they did with X2: Reunion some years back. Of course now the X universe is a lot bigger than it was then, still is very impressive.

I assume they calculate this so called "living universe" on the fly when you come close to the sectors (probably during jumps). That's how I'd have done it anyway.

No, as I said, all sectors are active all the time. Unless theres nothing in them that is to say, no sectors are empty, but speaking purely theoretical thats the only way the sectors wouldn't be active.
As I just explained the universe is living even if you're not, so if you just keep staying docked at some odd station in the far most sector of the universe the sector in the other end of the universe will still be active and have wars being fought, commerce, pirates etc all killing/trading with eachother or whatever.

Yes, but having all the logic calculation be active for all sectors would be highly inefficient from programming viewpoint. What I meant was, they probably create the illusion of living sectors by doing a quick simulation of what might have happened during your time off the base (taking into account what happened in nearby sectors and how long you were gone). I'm not saying this isn't impressive, because obviously it is well done.

No you're not right.
Theres "enemy" npc corporations competing on equal terms with you, they'll build up, or get killed off, in sectors far away from sectors you've never even been to. Only things which are critical to story lines aren't activated until you're near it or activate it.
It is very effeciently done, but theres no arguing the fact that it would run a lot smoother fps wise, were it done as you suggest.

The two big german PC magazines Gamestar and PC Games rated the game with 62 % (GS) and 64 % (PCG). PCG wrote in their review that the missions are totally frustrating and boring crap and basically unplayable. They advised to stay away from them and only play the game for the good economical aspects. But you don't really need this new game for that.

X series never was for everyone. You need a lot of time and patience. Dont expect youre able to build big fleets or industry complexes in the first 100h in game time. Most important thing i can recommend: Use the egosoft forum for tutorials, guides, maps, charts... Its part of the game to find out how stuff works. If you dont like this - pass by.

I dont write in these forums since... cant remember.. maybe since I was arguing with some console fans about FallOut 3 at the beguining of its threat, thats about 2 years ago, maybe more. I gived up when their arguments reduced to insult me, and decided to dont write here anymore.
But then this game pops up, a big budget old school pc game. I really thought that this serie had finished with the previous game. But no, they had the guts to release a game of this kind on this FPS/TPS-RTS-Console ports era.
I thought that they were going to transform this serie into another console-shit game, with simple controls, auto-aim, auto-flying and auto-everything and simple story line. Just like the rest of the series. But no, it looks like they have kept it loyal to the previous games. I cant help but applaud them.
And now Im hyped for this game, I have to blame Epsilon comments for that. Damn u Epsilon
I hope the scene dont pass by this game just becase there is few people wanting to play it (comparing it with other games) and they release a crack soon.
cheers

with DT pro last version (not lite free) u can create a clone and it work fine. PROCYON will don't go to release a clone anyway of this cause with DT lite free it don't work anyway

no. that will ever work without crack. it's ripped with alcohol. u have to make a proper image (TAGES profile) with the latest DT Pro version 4.30.0303 (not free). with the lite clone don't work anyway almost until next update. this is the same way of STALKER clear sky
