I think he meant there will be two kinds of accounts, premium (which will obviously provide some extra functionality and will be the source of income for the game) and a free account.

If that is the case, I'm all for it. But if it's free when you buy it, well jeez...

You can overclock your CPU/RAM/VPU clocks. Also the game will be free, but have a one of payment for a premium account (to help pay for the server).

C# |
You realize that C# can be fully decompiled?... It's even easier going to crack than virgin native code.

If so then impressive stuff, needs a lot of work (based on video/screenshots, which may or may not do it justice) to get it to a saleable quality (you may also want to consider a name change or fear the wrath of apple) but it should get you a decent career in games..
Still, can't stand these kinds of games, always too unrealistic, I'd rather do the real thing thanks . |
Yep I'm a student. The video is bad quality, the game is already of quality just doesn't have the content. Also I've applied for a trademark on 'iHacker', so I should be fine.
|
Applying for a trademark is a long way from owning a trademark. But unless Apple have trademarked the letter 'i', you shouldn't have a problem. That won't stop them from sending cease and desist letters, but there have been numerous cases where McDonalds have tried to stop people from using the 'Mc' prefix and lost (and a few they've won).
It could become expensive though.
Also, do you hold the copyright for the program, or is it owned by the University? It's worth checking, if you haven't already.
And don't forget to apply for TM's on both sides of the pond.

How is a game free if you pay for it? What do you know, WoW is also free, you just pay to support the servers lol. | There are those F2P MMOs, where they block certain features that are only unlockable if you pay for a monthly member status (or even more worse, making them separate item-shop purchases). I bet it's something along those lines.
Well, I always hated these kinds of business-plans, so this game is out of question from now on. Looked promising... |
The plan is for a one off payment for the premum account, which will last a lifetime. I'd love to make the game completely free, but I need to support the cost of the game servers (for the online gameplay functionality).

Try to use some advanced obfuscation tools, not the free ones that come with VS.

I wouldn't dream of using the the VS tools, much perfer third party tools for obfuscation. |
Don't be fooled though, vm languages (like Java and C#) are the easiest to decompile and "deobfuscate."

you seriously think enough people are going to buy your game enough to pay for the costs of the server? You'll have to be charging more than any other full price PC game to even keep up the costs for just 1 month. I doubt you'll sell that well.

Yeah. I think if you were to focus on a great solo experience with no need for servers (or allow players to create the mp games - again no cost for you). That way you get maximum amount of people playing it, hence building rep for yourself, and get hired by a big company (or you get so much rep that people are willing to pay).

That one-time fee does sound much better (I take the last paragraph back).
However if you would like to hear my opinion, I would suggest you should use some sort of auth-key system and only set up a server to check those keys, also since it's a small business, you could make sure that only those keys are accepted that are already sold, so key-gens are out of question and if they use the same key from more than one IPs at the same time, then you can ban that key. A Freelancer stlye multiplayer would be the way to go, where you only have to maintain the authentication server, while players would host their own games. There would surely be lots of persistent dedicated servers.
This way it would cost less. Besides, maintaning a 23/7 (no typo, servers would need regular restarts) game server is NOT a one man job. Regular maintenance, constant tech-support, etc.

@ TrueADM
I don't know shit about these things, but recently Valve is showing interest in independent developers and small-budget games. Check out the list of steam games.
They also promote their free Steamworks platform http://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/
You may wanna check out these 2 options, especially since your game requires a net connection anyway, heh.

Yeah Valve seems to be really open to small devs. Just look at Audiosurf. Getting your game on steam would be huge.
