It's not too difficult to remove them manually. Plus you know what you removed as opposed to some application going in and doing who knows what.

Device Manager - Sound, video and game controllers - Video/Audio codecs - Properties

Remove the apps which use them first though like codec packs and individual codecs.

Arrow Codec Sniper

I tried to remove an adaptec DV codec with it. It removed it from the list alright, but a quick system search revealed that none of the adaptec files were removed from system.

However, I selected 'codec_sniper.exe' and pressed delete, and that worked fine.

Maybe not, but thx anyway.

if all else fails, get gspot to list all codecs and their respective files and enter "regsvr32 /u codecfilename.ax" on commandline to remove them
you can then go and delete or move the actual files from system32

do what swingman suggested and don't be afraid to remove them all, sound as well. Then add a good codec pack like Klite or CCCP, it's like magic
