Since my old piece of shit rig is now three years old it's time to get a new one, however i haven't updated myself very much on what's hot or not so i don't really know what to get
If you where to spend about $5500 what would you get??
No need for screen, keyboard etc. Just computer and speakers!
Thanks beforehand!

Ya seriously tho, you can get a a pretty decent system for half the price. Anything is else overkill or should be donated to me.

Thanks dudes!
I don't need to spend $5500 but i can if necessary, if i could get away with $4000 or $3000 then fine, i just want the damn comp to be fast enough to run the latest games at full potential
Are the gtx ultras so much better than the gt's?

I don't get why you advice him -if seriously- to get some 8800 GTX or ultras. They are powerful but outdated, over-priced and soon EOL.
@ ollax
The 8800 GT 1GB is afair something like 10% better than its 512MB counterpart. Excepting for crysis or if you play at uber high resolutions, for the time being a SLI of 8800 GT or 8800 GTS 512mb should be more than enuff, then wait for the new nvidia cards to spend your cash.

it`s not better at all... the 256 bit interface with these memory speeds cant`t provide even near enough bandwith for 1 gig memory... sure there are a few mods out there that could use the ram - but it would be much wiser to either get two gts 512 or save the money and wait for the next generation high end cards - if you can wait some more month, that would be the best decision imo.

Like you advice and what i have written above i would take an SLI of GT or GTS 512MB and wait for a newer nvidia card, rather than taking a bunch of costly, power hungry and outdated 8800GTX/Ultra.

10 %?
no... more like 1 % - and that 1% in the test linked below isn`t even a result of the memory... it is because the card they reviewed has a higher core clock then the 8800 gt 512 mb... It`s more like a "first look", but you can find more test if you google for it...

the gts 512 is ~10% faster... in some games (crysis fe) even more.

Either way it doesn't matter, whether or not the performance increase is worth the increased price is irrelevent as he's looking for the best future proofed rig. With money not being a constraint might as well get the 1Gig for it's potential to outperform the 512 version alone.

Funnier you guys are recommending SLI when about 4 games actually support the use of it.

If you had $5k, would you "just" buy a single card? As much as I hate SLi and it's uselessness, If I had tons of money to shell out I'd buy 12 cards and cram them into the case whether it works or not.

No, I'd buy the best one available then load up on rquipment like a damn good sound system and huge ass monitor, then a bunch on storage.

Forget about the one gig gt's then!
So what are the specs for next gen high end cards? I heard they weren't all that good for what you will have pay for them!

I actually never got around to order that comp, to much shit all of a sudden dropped on my lap, separation from wife, best friends suicide etc, but life moves on and its time to upgrade the comp and the gf is already updated;-)

With no monetary constraints? You'd still buy a single card? All that other stuff you mentioned is a given with that amount of dough.
But even with a money ceiling I still consider 5.5k for a rig as "infinite" money LoL. You can basically get anything on the planet. Only thing that could set you back is a LCD depending on how big you go-go-gadget.

i'd rather feed some homeless bums on the street rather than spending shit load of cash on something real useless
or buy something that has it's use
hey but that's just me

YEAH BABY
http://www.nordichardware.se/image3.php?id=4680
On a seriuos note tough, usually when there is a new generation of "high end" cards being released, performance usualkly almost doubbles from previous cards.
The 9800 only addds 30% on the 8800ultra and is basicly two 8800gts stuck togheter:-(
Basicly it should be called 8800 GTS X2....
Sofar there is no real "new" cards coming out!
Not even sure this crap supports DX 10.1
