I'm after a bit of Anti-virus/Security suites advice. Now the ones ive tried are far too invasive and slow my system down to a crawl. So basically I'd like to try one that is 'lightweight' but offers the same security as the rest..

Ones ive gone through over the years are:

Norton (Never again!!! ) Smile
Kaspersky - slows system up despite tweaking it, but a very impressive app
Zone Alarm - as above..
F-secure - wont even work on my system!

There are others but I cannot remember atm.. So any advice would be welcome. As I said something that will run in the background and not take over the bloody system.. but will still offer a good firewall and virus detection.. Or maybe i'm better off with 2 seperate apps?? thanks for any advice.

Comodo firewall+Avast antivirus, both free. The latter "on-access protection" can be paused in a single right click which is its state for me most of the time. Both works on x86 and x64 windows XP/Vista systems.

Hardware firewall + either extreme common sense OR an anti-virus networked machine that checks the whole network.

Few hardware firewall (e.g. on routers) will check outgoing connections, software firewall is there to fill this gap if anything more. Smile

n.b.: if you try Avast Reg67, change the default skin for a better one, disable avast sounds and select "silent mode" everywhere it is available (updates & on-access protection control's providers).

NOD32 Security Suite thingy is nice, firewall works fine and isn't over-obtrusive.

Firewalls don't need to "check" anything in most scenarios, that's what an IDS should be used for. All router based firewalls provide port blocking both inbound and outbound (unless of course they're extremely cheap crap).

Still a more important point is that you should have better control over your system, you should know what connections are being made from the applications you install and if you don't then you shouldn't install it. People put so much faith in anti-virus systems and firewalls, software can always be flawed, you are never safe. Trust your own knowledge rather than relying on systems built by potential idiots.

It's why I'm using sygate personal firewall 5.6 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3356.html
Free and fast. Recent firewalls are a joke, they take more juice than a fucking game. This firewall is 3 years old, but who care? A firewall doesn't need update. Of course the pro version is by far better, but I think you can't even buy it anymore, they got bought by the symantec faggot.

I don't use any anti-virus. Anti-virus is bs anyway. The best anti-virus is your brain.

In most scenarii you have a bunch of -illegal- apps installed that you want to prevent to call home unless you choose to, closing ports won't help in this. Wink A software firewall is just another layer of security and possibility of monitoring, while most people for who i have installed them weren't particularly IT savvy. Smile

I used sygate personal firewall pro for years and sure it was great, now it is completely outdated and it must leaks from everywhere. Comodo's memory use (with the defense+ new feature disabled if it changes anything) is 2192K as i write.

I'm looking at the ss of comodo and I doubt it is not heavy. Sygate take 20 000k. I don't care how much ram it take, I have plenty. The only thing I care is to not see performance difference before/after. And sygate is not slowing down my computer at all.

I tried to install comodo but it can't be installed with another firewall, I'm not going to uninstall sygate.

It is right now stuck at 0% CPU (e6750 OC / vista x64) and 2,236 K of memory use while i am heavily downloading on both P2P & newsgroups (maxing out my current 30Mbit cable connection)... Smile
Of course feel free to stay with an unmaintained app as a firewall, but maybe test it with some online leak test to see the necessity of an update. Wink

I can admit you got a good point. Is comodo checking the process closely, like if the prog try to install somethings in the registry, ect?

Do you know any good process checker that only check what a process do?

The version 3 of comodo has some feature (which you can disable) like that, called Defense+, it checks if an application try to have direct access to your keyboard (keylogger), monitor, etc, it locks down access to critical registry keys and system folders/files, COM interfaces... And nope i haven't any "process checker" to recommend you right now. Smile

Personal fanboy of kaspersky here. Though if you don't go into porn sites and "not really trusted sites" then you don't really need a whole lot and can just get away with AVG or something. Also hardware firewalls are the best but I still like software so I can control them easier and be notified when something wants to connect etc.

i m using kaspersky internet security and it sure as hell slows down alot of stuff significantly. But it is also the first and best line of defence against rootkits and other unwanted background-installations that often come with the warez-territory.

I've never used a firewall or Anti-Virus and just been cautious as to stupid shit I click and had no problems. Most of them are too memory heavy and instrusive for my taste anyway.
