Comodo firewall+Avast antivirus, both free. The latter "on-access protection" can be paused in a single right click which is its state for me most of the time. Both works on x86 and x64 windows XP/Vista systems.

Hardware firewall + either extreme common sense OR an anti-virus networked machine that checks the whole network.

NOD32 Security Suite thingy is nice, firewall works fine and isn't over-obtrusive.

Still a more important point is that you should have better control over your system, you should know what connections are being made from the applications you install and if you don't then you shouldn't install it. People put so much faith in anti-virus systems and firewalls, software can always be flawed, you are never safe. Trust your own knowledge rather than relying on systems built by potential idiots. | In most scenarii you have a bunch of -illegal- apps installed that you want to prevent to call home unless you choose to, closing ports won't help in this. A software firewall is just another layer of security and possibility of monitoring, while most people for who i have installed them weren't particularly IT savvy.

Free and fast. Recent firewalls are a joke, they take more juice than a fucking game. This firewall is 3 years old, but who care? A firewall doesn't need update. Of course the pro version is by far better, but I think you can't even buy it anymore, they got bought by the symantec faggot.
I don't use any anti-virus. Anti-virus is bs anyway. The best anti-virus is your brain. | I used sygate personal firewall pro for years and sure it was great, now it is completely outdated and it must leaks from everywhere. Comodo's memory use (with the defense+ new feature disabled if it changes anything) is 2192K as i write.

I'm looking at the ss of comodo and I doubt it is not heavy. Sygate take 20 000k. I don't care how much ram it take, I have plenty. The only thing I care is to not see performance difference before/after. And sygate is not slowing down my computer at all.
I tried to install comodo but it can't be installed with another firewall, I'm not going to uninstall sygate.

I can admit you got a good point. Is comodo checking the process closely, like if the prog try to install somethings in the registry, ect?
Do you know any good process checker that only check what a process do?

Personal fanboy of kaspersky here. Though if you don't go into porn sites and "not really trusted sites" then you don't really need a whole lot and can just get away with AVG or something. Also hardware firewalls are the best but I still like software so I can control them easier and be notified when something wants to connect etc.

i m using kaspersky internet security and it sure as hell slows down alot of stuff significantly. But it is also the first and best line of defence against rootkits and other unwanted background-installations that often come with the warez-territory.

I've never used a firewall or Anti-Virus and just been cautious as to stupid shit I click and had no problems. Most of them are too memory heavy and instrusive for my taste anyway.
