Man I wish the 1.5 crack worked. It doesn't let me start the game with it. I had to use the 1.12 crack to make the game work, so Game.dll and Engine.dll don't take advantage of the 1.5 patch.
Game runs not that great on my comp btw, or at least not as good as I was expecting.
My PC: C2D E6400, 2GB DDR2, 8800GT
I was hoping to run the game at 1920x1200 with all max but noAA, but instead with 1680x1050 and with texture to medium, it still kinda stutters and fps like 30fps average or so.

If say I bought the game for 10 bucks, would there be more of a chance that I can run this community patch 1.5 rather than with the Crack and Razor1911 release?

@ MustangSVT
If you buy it, you'll have no problems with the protection etc. But don't think that the community patch makes it playable. Better not to support this bugfest.

And at current state, almost all ingame bugs are fixed, all skills work etc. it is most addictive rpg out there, atleast for me.

What's with that 1.2GB compilation patch talk?
The Gothic 3 disc in the universe edition is pre-patched to version 1.12 but nothing special has been done with it from what I've read on the official forums, which is rather natural as it's just a compilation of the three Gothic games and the NoTR addon for Gothic 2.
(Gothic 3 still benefits from the community patch albeit as mentioned it's not working properly with it due to changes in the copy protection.)
Pirahna wanted to create a big final patch for Gothic 3 but never got far into development due to leaving Jowood so any work they did on such a patch would be in alpha or beta state at best.
Spellbound are now working with Jowood and the community patch group for the 1.6 version and probably also helped a bit during the 1.5 developement.
(Especially those changed dll files and exe file.)
Pirahna also helped a bit from what I've read and those changes might also appear in the 1.6 release of the community patch.
(Various texture fixes - hope it helps those desert enviroments albeit they did explain they were new to learn those techniques so that's why several textures look quite bad, especially the normal maps.)

So has anyone tried the 1.5 patch and if so does it really make the game more playable now?

The game is quite good now but there's still some problems albeit overall the fixes does make a difference though the game could certainly have been alot better if the developers had been able to spend more time developing it.
It still consumes a massive amount of memory and Vista users (Both x86 and x64) especially should consider patching the executable (Information about this is available via one of the pinned threads on the official Gothic 3 forums. / Tech support section.) to take advantage of more than 2GB of ram if available. (3.5 or so for 32-bit and 4 for 64-bit / Unless you for some reason have more than 4GB installed as 64-bit can handle up to 128GB of ram from what I've read.)
Stability wise it can still crash now and then so save often and in various slots.
Also be sure to exit the game before starting a new game and don't have any old saves remaining as that has been known to cause problems.
(Things don't reset properly unless you restart the game after playing and deciding to start a new game for some reason.)
Performance wise it could run better but performance is OK unless you go crazy with view distance via INI tweaking or such.
(Albeit the game engine isn't that optimized.)
I still have some hope for Gothic 4 even though it will be different and RPB (Pirhana bytes new game.) might also be quite good but for now there's not that many details available about either game.

The updated 1.5 community patch is out and the protection has been removed. |
This is 1.5.2 in numbers, 1.5 has already been out quite some time. So the only thing this does, it removes the copyprotection.

For all the patching they've done: still can't get anti-aliasing to work.

It's a problem with the engine from what I know, might never be "fixed" the way that game related bugs and those memory errors are fixed.
I guess it's due to the games lightning system as HDR+AA wasn't possible when the game was first released.
(Albeit it's strange that AA still can't be forced on the latest ATI and NVIDIA cards.)
The depth of field effect helps a bit but it only covers the far away landscape.
EDIT: I guess it can be compared to the combat system which is also a bit broken due to poor balance and a few exploits such as spamming quick attacks.
(Which might even be required to counter those fast stun attacks that wild animals do, funny that orcs and humans fall quickly but wild beasts like boars and wolves always provide a challenge whereas the high damage dealing trolls and ogres are too slow to be a real threat unless encountered in small caves.)

Well, my first 2 days in Gothic III are done. I must say I like it as far as it is a RPG in a big open world, but even with all the patching, this thing is far from done.

Works fine for me and even the standard 1.12 patch worked OK. (Vista Ultimate x64.)
Do you have the usual updates installed?
(Latest DirectX and VC++ SP1 Redistributables as well as those hotfixes and the general updates.)
EDIT: Based on a few searches one other user solved it by upgrading his video card drivers (This was for a NVIDIA owner.) but the post was from 2006 so better drivers have been available for quite some time now and you probably already have the latest public or beta version installed already.

Lol, I just checked out the full changelog ! What the hell did those criminals release and publish in the first place ?
Anyway, unlike the previous community patches, this looks really impressive. Spellbound helped with this, hence the heavy gamecore changes. Finally. Now I'll just have to wait for 1-2 patches more and then take my chances with this game ...

From my understanding another community patch is planned but it looks like it will be the final one as some problems such as the somewhat unbalanced combat would require alot of work to get done right.
(Generally the game as a whole is a bit unbalanced as the player can easily find great equipment early on and most NPC's are extremely easy compared to the beasts and creatures in the world not to mention the overpowered magic system.)
