since you already mentioned some of my favorites and i cant think of any coming close to those (apart from perhaps the alien series), here are the recent good SciFi-movies that come to my mind:

Primer - no special effects, blending a story based rather oldschool sci-fi story with a pretty smart & newish way of telling it, the less you know about the story beforehand the better

a scanner darkly - artsy and great, dystopian future

renaissance - kinda like scanner darkly, but more film noire, more action

the Masters of Science Fiction TV series - decent stories with variing quality, but non sci-fi-channel-bad

Serenity - space-opera with cowboys (Big-screen ending to the firefly series)

mmmh, seems there hasnt been any really great sci-fi movies that fit your profile lately apart from sunshine that i can remember

PS: for fun: Alien Apocalypse 2005 <= awesome splatterfest b-movie with aliens Very Happy
PPS: fuck it, hasnt there really been any other movies like event horizon and sunshine?

Donnie Darko is the most pretentious piece of convoluted shit ever. Nice concept, poor execution.

i loved it, because it resonated with me on an emotional level and had some great quotes (e.g. the superman baby discussion Very Happy) and great atmosphere and the greatest bunny costume in cinematic history. May not be the most stringent sci-fi material, but as a brooding dark emotional movie of the strange variety, it s perfect.
btw. there are two versions out there, the extended director's cut and the original theatrical release. The dir. cut fixes up some of the plot-sketchiness but also loses some of its emotional momentum because of that.

Alien is much better than Aliens. The suspense when you first see that film is almost overwhelming.

aliens is a great action movie, while alien is a great horror-suspense-movie.

alien 1 & 3: suspense horror
alien 2 & 4: great action movies

avp: somewhat inbetween and shittier, but i still liked it alot

absolutely disagree jenni

i think there are two camps, one say alien is better, one says aliens is better, and thats fine... they are two different films, but to say alien is much better is to insult how amazing aliens was... regardless of which film one thinks is better, i think there is little doubt that at most, one can say either given film is only SLIGHTLY better than the other... it just depends on how your looking at the films.

for me, i loved aliens better, because i preferred the excitement of it... thats really the only difference between the films

they both had excellent stories, amazing dialogue, the finest assembly of cast, brilliant visual and practical effects, unmatched atmosphere and artistic design, and some of the strongest character design/development youll ever seen in a sci-fi film... im not going to debate that you find alien to be better than aliens, they are both amazing film, but to say that alien is far superior to aliens is just bs.

i also preferred the portrayal of ripley in the second film... james cameron, so far, has been the only director ive ever seen that can do believable, flawed, and amazingly heroic & strong female characters... everyone elses attempts come off as tacky and pathetic teenage boys big-titted fantasies...

either way, i think my statement stands true... aliens is a must-see for any sci-fi fan. my statement might have downplayed how good alien was, and that wasnt my intention - it was simply to say that as much as alien is a must-see, so is aliens.

Huh? Sci-fi?

Sphere , Abyss , Event horizon and Sunshine

There's a common thread in those movies and that's a group of people on a mission into the unknown. Then I think you'll like

Red Planet
Mission to Mars (two very similar movies which came out in the same year too)
Pitch Black (my favourite Very Happy)
20,000 leagues under the sea (oldie but James Mason does a remarkable Nemo)
Solyaris (The original one)

If you like to go through series you should try Stargate SG-1 or Stargate Atlantis. I recommend both of them.

a new cut eh... these guys are milking the fuck out of that film LUCAS style!!!

whats this, the third, or 4th version? fucks sake, wish they'd just leave it alone or get it right on the directors version like virtually everyone else manages too...

great film, but i hate when people milk it with constant and unnecessary revisions...

well ... BR directors cut wasn't exactly great ...

Quote:
Scott has since complained that time and money constraints, along with his obligation to Thelma & Louise, kept him from retooling the film in a completely satisfactory manner. While he is happier with the 1992 release of the film than with the original theatrical version, he has never felt entirely comfortable with it as his definitive Director's Cut.

Originally released as a single-disc DVD in March 1997, the Director's Cut was one of the first DVDs on the market. However, it is of low quality compared to DVDs of later standards, due to it being produced in the early days of the format. Warner Home Video re-released it with a new transfer in 2006 as a "Digitally Remastered Version." The 1997 2.0 Dolby Surround audio track remained unchanged, however.

funny that this cut has been delayed for so many years ...

Quote:
Scott was invited in mid-2000 to help put together a final and definitive version of the film, which was completed in mid-2001. During the process, a new digital print of the film was created from the original negatives, special effects were updated and cleaned, and the sound was remastered in 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound. Unlike the rushed 1992 Director's Cut, Scott personally oversaw the new cut as it was being made. After years of legal disputes, Warner Bros. announced in 2006 that it had finally secured full distribution rights to the film

so now you get a much better looking film + 5.1 sound and high-def releases ... so I don't think it is that unnecessary ..

OMG! How can you like that mixed up piece of garbage better than pitch black? What are you smoking? Razz They are not even connected to each other. While watchin COR I was thinking the characters are the same but I don't recognize them. Furians wtf! It was as if PB was made in a different verse. Very Happy They just took that fact about the umbilical chord and 'connected' it to this necromonger story. Those two stories just don't connect! And the ending! Wonder what Riddick told the necropeople? 'Um guys, there's a slight change of plan'. Razz
Only good thing about the film was that it was visually stunning.

I haven't seen Solaris so I can't comment on it but the original was an excellent movie. I never watch remakes because what could anyone possibly add to a movie which is good enough (the first time) to be worth making again. Fancy cgi alone doesn't make a good movie.

Thanks, you saved me from having to post that. Very Happy

It's a shame they even translated some of that Furion bullshit into the game.
