I recently bought a Chieftec ATX 620W PSU and its fucking annoying me. Its so noisy, like a vacuum cleaner when running for more than 4hrs. I knew its not a silent one when I purchased it but I didnt expect it to be so brutally loud. You can hear it from outside the house at night. I need to get rid of it again, sell it on ebay and get a new PSU. However, I still have a silent Enermax 350W PSU from my old rig. Now I'm wondering if 350W is enough for the new system (I doubt it) or if I need something new and quiet in the 500-600W class.

System:
CPU: Core2Duo E6600
GRA: GF 8800 GTS 640
MB: Asus P5W DH DX
RAM: Corsair 2GB DDR2
a DVD drive
and 3 HDD's (1 extern, 1 ide, 1 sata)

I had a similar setup with a 400watt psu and had problems.
Sometimes it wouldnt boot or when it did boot would sometimes freeze up reading files from my other drives.
I bought a 600watt two weeks ago and havent had any problems since.

with 8800gts i doubt enermax will pull it, i suggest u get Zalman ZM600-HP Heatpipe Cooled 600W, espensive? yes.
but then again it's ultra-quiet and very reliable and can pull anything Wink

if u stick to your psu or get some cheap-half-ass one u can lose some of your components sooner or later

i've got a similir problem like him

i've got this:

420W PSU
Pentium D 3GHZ
nVidia 7900GT ASUS
2GB DDR2 RAM Kingston
DVD Writer
3 HDD (2 internal,1 external)

when playing games or usin' a program,or even boot up,it makes a lot of noise, but the major fuck up is that when i'm playin' a game (STALKER and others),at rare moments the game FREEZES UP,...screen gets freezed and then the noise and computer goes all normal, but must reboot...

Think there's a problem with my PSU unit?...or do i need a better and silent one?..what other components i should change if i change my PSU Unit to that better/silent one?

For the 15th time, make sure the PSU's 12V Rail specs meet or exceed the vid card/rigs requirements, and your set.

The one in my sig suits me fine. Super quiet, inexpensive, and PLENTY of power for anyone not interested in farming out nuclear reactors to power their rig. Just buy a good brand with plenty of 12v, good efficiency rating, and well-known brand and you'll be fine.

I have a similar configuration to your one, the main difference is the graphics card (GF 7950) and i have chosen a whooping 160 euro (at least when i bought it Smile ) Enermax 620 W Liberty ...
My pc supplier tried to mount a 400-450 W one but it never even got on !
Then i had to say my pc supplier what to use ... damn where are the old good and with a pair of balls computer supplier ?!?!?!
Go with a nice min 600 W PSU !

god finally someone on this board who uses the same PSU's I do. I got the 510 watt turbo, I fuckin love this thing. It's been running strong since I was using 754, at the end of using 939 and Ima use it till it can't take anymore on AM2. The things with these PSU unlike most companies, they rate their power at about 60C as opposed to most rating them powered off.

@ ELIZ, their fuckin heavy as hell too. Their built like tanks. My 510 is heavy enough I can't imagine how heavy that one is.

I'm getting a new PSU now, but I havent decided yet which one to buy.
Those are on my top 3 list:
be quiet Dark Power Pro P6 530W
be quiet Dark Power Pro P6 600W
Enermax Liberty 500W ATX 2.2 (ELT500AWT)

I don't want to pay more than 130€ for it, so I'm most probably going for the be quiet 530W, which has the best cost-effectiveness.
However I want to keep the opportunity to maybe use SLI in the future, 530W enough for that?

If you can exchange the psu that you bought for a quieter one then that would be the best way to go. But if you have to spend on buying a new one then you could take a look at the source of the noise. Is the psu fan the source of the noise or is it due to the air flowing through the vents? You could try taking out the fan out of the psu and running it by itself (most of these things run on 12V). If it is indeed the culprit then the solution might be as simple as buying a a quieter fan. Most PSUs use standard 80mm fans.

Don't burn your house down or electrocute yourself. Very Happy

Someone please help me at this!..urgent!

After reading my GFX Card's box requirements (ASUS's nVidia EN7900GT) it says it needs 350W...while my PSU's 400W...like i said in my first post on this topic,i've got a Pentium D 3Ghz,2GB DDR2 RAM,2 HDD's (400GB and 290GB) internal and a external one (250GB LACIE) and that GFX Card i've mentioned before, plus an LG DVD DL Re-/Writer

Knowing that no wonder why my PC Has a lot of noise and always Froze up on me (I.E: Playing STALKER or some other games, the game FREEZES and the noise gets reduced to normal status..but i must reboot the goddamn PC for nuts...it happend to me before with an ol' rig thou ¬¬...

Is it because of the PSU or because of my Intel MoBo's Intel Fan at the CPU?

I'm thinkin' of getting the ThermalTake i've linked in my last post, since, after reading reviews,it's the most silent and powerful, modular (aka put only the PSU's cables you need) PSU ever
http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Power/ToughPower/W0106/w0106.asp

Can someone recommend it to me?..should i change my CPU fan to a modded one too?

EDIT: BTW,i've found a "Media Magic 700W" "Super Silent" PSU...but the price difference was totally suspicious...

MM700W: 69€
ThermalTought: 120€

WTF?....u kiddin' me?

@DV2

Most PSU manufacturers try to scare us into buying bigger units without the computer really needing it. Your freezing problems could be due to overheating too. Try checking your temps with motherboard monitor or something like that. If the temps seem high then run your comp with the sidepanels removed and check the temps and see if the problem re-occurs. One symptom of your graphic card overheating is the appearance of artifacts while playing. If you still get freeze-up problems try running your system on minimum components like using your primary HD alone. Though I guess the optical drives don't use power when they're not spinning.

I don't subscribe to the more power, more everything theory and that's why I still use the no brand '350W' unit that came with the case despite having upgraded the graphics card, memory, adding a 2nd hd and dvd writer. I was even running a thermaltake bigwater system in the same computer for about a year and a half. And I bet the damn thing doesn't even put out 350W. Very Happy

Granted I am using a previous gen graphics card (ATI 800Pro) but the manufacturers were saying the same thing about higher power requirements when those came out new on the market.

Besides,do you think this happens because of the PSU?...or the graphic card?...

@DV2, I had a problem with freeze ups that I thought was the PSU, but ended up being the CPU was overheating ...

also, here is someone else with a freezing problem that was the chipset overheating:

How can i resolve the problem then?..like i said,i've got a 400W PSU and a nVidia EN7900GT that sucks 350W and the official Intel CPU Fan thingy if ya kno' what i mean.

What should i do?...would you recommend me anyways to change my PSU and CPU Fans to get no noise??..if so,wich models/companies should i look after?..or what kind of accessories?....

And you haven't replied to the problem about the game's crazy graphics (Check a link above in one of my posts)..it's killin' me...i want my games BACK TO NORMAL!!!...

ReketeEdit: by checking the 3D thingy of my nVidia at desktop properties (Temperament Config,i guess?) it shows 66-67C (It's Spanish...)...
