Is there a way to get games to stop putting my saves in "my documents" ? I bought a seperate HD for games for a reason. windows crashes or something then I lose all my saves.

I'd like to know this aswell - It pisses me off that devs do this now, my D:\ is for games and C:\ is for the O.S.. so as you say if it goes down i only lose my windows and nothing too important.

I'm guessing its a registry tweak for each seperate game.. but feck knows how to do it, someone must know? Smile

well i know some games like nfsu2,nfsmw have some patches to redirect saves in to the main game folder, may only work with no-cd .exe's tho

go to gamecopy and see if they have any

i myself always back up my saves, even if your os crashed My docs is almost always intact so reinstall os without reformat and get your saves/files back

I use petty lil viruses as an excuse to reinstall windows Razz even if it's something so easy to get rid of, I hate reinstallign so I wont do it any other time

Your "my documents" folder is actually contained in your profile folder under Documents and Settings. There's several tips out there on moving profiles to another drive. Just google "change documents and settings location"

I think he knows that, i certainly do.. What i would like to know is how to change the save dir of every game to the dir the game is installed in Smile Ie:

D:\games\stalker\saves

D:\games\simcity\saves

that sort of thing.. fu*k knows why the idiot devs decided we wanted our saves all in the same dir on C:\ Sad

Should be an option when you install games. Just as you get to decide where to put the game itself it should ask where you want your savegames. Not that anyone would want them anywhere other than the game-directory.

Come on guys, don't be hard on the devs, this is how Windows works. All games that support multiple windows users prefer saving games and options to each user's private folder, for security ,compatibility and easier programming.

Googled around, found these:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/userpath.htm
http://www.askdavetaylor.com/moving_documents_and_settings_folder_onto_second_hard_disk.html

Not gonna try it myself, but if someone does, please post back for others to see what's the easiest way.

That's not really the problem.
I've already moved the profile folder and the "my documents" folder to a drive separated from windows.

The problem is that game companies keep creating folders in "My Documents", it get's clogged up when you've got a couple games installed.
I've got four games installed now and three of them has created folders inside "My Documents".
