Man this is great fun. The controls are a bit off after playing SH3 for long and the sound mix is strange (loud music, the rest silent) but the gameplay and visuals are top notch. And I was shocked to see how well SH4 performs on my laptop (has "only" a NV7400Go), it performs just as well as SH3 but looks much better even at medium settings. And the drivers under vista cannot even considered to be beta. So with better drivers SH4 does perform just as well as SH3 but with my native res of 1280x800.

I must admit though that SH4 is a bit on the buggy side. I had some strange things happen too. Once the eyes of my crewman got bigger like them beeing on drugs Wink

But a patch here and there, a faster driver and a mod and SH4 will be great. I've seen enough of Atlantic Warfare for the moment. Pacific is nice for a change. Although I must admit that when you think of Uboats I think of German ones. The Atlantic theatre is more fun (at least to me). SH5 anyone?

Or could just combine them and make a world one Very Happy

I only played a few quick war missions but I like how you actually blow holes in the ships now and can see the insides where you blasted it open.

heya peps.. is it me or this shit smells like beta?

whats with sonar? wtf? how can i use it manualy? nothing works for me. same think with radar all i can do is stare on some green monitor that do shit. am i missing something obvious?
where all the extra info gone? like 'how long fuel will last if we gonna run around with that speed' kind of info that where in SH3?
is sound fucked? is it for u immposible to tell when u are hit by deep charges too or is it only me?
dont get me wrong. i loved all the three sh games so far but this one really should get like month more for polishing.

It does in some respects feel like a Beta, don't look it but. There are quite a few bugs, like the sound and Manual chronometer. But hey the game is not released until the 20th or so for real, so i guess patching will be at least 2-3 weeks...if that.

Well I would not say its a beta, unfortunately that is the state most 1.0 versions are these days when they come out. I've seen much buggier releases, Gothic 3 anyone? Mainly SH4 is working fine and the bugs should be patched easily.

I'd considere SH4 as a tech base anyway for future mods. Just take a look at vanilla SH3 and SH3+GWX, totally different gaming experience. Now imagine similar mods for SH4, that will enhance the game greatly. It like MS FlightSims, they get good when the addon start pouring in. Vanilla FSX is pretty much unattractive, but FS2004+Addons is wow. FSX provides a great tech base though for coming addons. Just like SH4 does for future mods. No limited resolution, better visuals and shader effects and so on. The realism comes with the mods, the romanian devs were never good at that - not with SH3 and surely not with SH4.

If you're unsatisfied with SH4 just keep a backup and take a look in 6-12month when the great mods with turn it into a game it should have been. Same story as with SH3. I would not expect UBI to deliver here (no matter what they promise to boost sales). The said the same for SH3, and screwed me over with F1 RacingSim where the patch got stuck with the FIA for years now - it never came despite UBI swearing the had a patch just needed FIA validation.

That's the reason I've not bought a UBI game since for the PC. But SH4 is pretty fun for the moment an will shine when better mods are in and my system gets a little bit faster - although it performs well enough already.

I am actually wishing for a German Atlantic mod already. The pacific theater where never my thing really. And i miss the interface being slid out from the left side, keep forgetting and end up just clicking in mid air Razz Also the look out giving you direction and speed etc would be sooo much cooler...just like in SH3. Now you have to run between 2-3 stations just to get a good bearing.

Oh well, SH4 is for sure a feast of eye candy that's for sure, will hard play it some more in the week of course and get more in to the career I started. I am sure it will be fine in the end, like you said "Just needs a patch and some mods"

For me, SH4 is the worst contradiction of a PC game i've ever faced.

On the port side, i have the great atmosphere of SH3, with all the gwx goodies.
On the starboard, there is SH4 with its visual godlyhood and nice visual damage modelling. I mean, its just a pleasure in itself to look at the holes your torps make.

Now the contradiction: The pacific theater is not really my cup of tea, neither is being an american sub captain. This drives me to play SH3 some more. On the other hand, whenever i think about playing SH3, images about nasty big holes, detailed models, post processing effect pop into my mind, making me realize just how much better SH4 looks.

So there i sit, between SH3 and SH4, going straight ahead, unable to choose where to turn. Straight ahead however is stalker, which is a completely different genre.

Im afraid i'll not touch SH4 until at least the first batch of bugfixes, and will maybe even wait for the first few mods. Would it be played in the european theater (on the german side ofc), you probably couldnt drive me away from it, not even by force.

Now, it is just a big piece of useless eye candy. Did i mention the fact, that the UI is horrible? Where are the reports? What should we do with the annoying message log that just fits nowhere on the screen? Why did they have to change the 'menu' sturcture at all?

The chronometer seemingly not working is so far off the scale.. > <.. well about that far. Razz Oh, and it is also way too big, horribly ugly and sure to get into the way. Plus it pops up unnecessarily on time acceleration, but does not go away if you slow down.

All in one, the game is a moderate disappointment for me. Full of minor to serious issues that arent serious in themselves, but quickly add up to ruin your day.

The game is full of potential, but it certainly needs some polishing.

My vote: SH3 + GWX for the time being.

SH3 (out of the box) has StarFoce, that alone would kill the game for me.

By the way, carriers sink pretty fast if hit by four torpedos. This fella came steaming right by me, I just waited and then emptied the entire forward torpedo bank in his side from just 600 yards away.

Why are aircrafts still on there while it's sinking?

Couldn't have said it better. Will be Stalker for my part until a patch or two is released for SH4.

You don't need four in general. For a carrier or large battleship four may be needed. But smaller ones and espicially freithers can be sunk with a single one. It also depends where you hit. Some parts and areas of a ships hull are deadlier than others.

Exclamation EXACTLY! Still enjoying it but...keep saving as you will need it if things go south... that's bugs I am talking about here, not fuke ups in the tactics department. One thing that for sure is different is the SCALE! the pacific is HUGE!... I needed like 4h to finish patrol 1 running my career. Just in the middle of pat 2 now.

The voices of the crewmembers suck hard, no emotions at all in it.
Sounds are fucked up in general, but I hope they're going to fix that.
In my opinion they should drop the World War 2 and move on to.. say.. a war during the Cold War period? Or why not modern times?

Nothing beats the feeling when you correctly coordinate a torpedo to hit the hull of an enemy ship with 100% precision. Very Happy

How do you find docks anyway? I tried the first Asian Fleet mission on campaign but when I arrived at the star on the map there was nothing but rocks and beaches there, take it the black dots on the map are the docks?

Btw, anyone know if there are any mods out yet?

Thanks in advance.

How do u play on full realism and use the chronometer? I still havent figured out how to use it Sad

EDIT: What i mean is, how do u use the chronometer to calculate the speed of the enemy.
