I am going to try the full version.
You are absolutely right in regards to the zoom levels and I totally appreciate the ability to split the view (not just on one screen but to another) but there has to be a fine balance and I don't think there is an ideal zoom setting to be comfortable at which makes it very finicky, especially in the heat of battle when you have air units zipping around and you can't make out what's going on down below (aside from the fact you want to witness the onslaught itself in detail).
Graphically the game is nothing special - I have it on full settings. It's nothing special but it's understandable given it's scale. Whether DX10 will improve upon it significantly I don't know - have there been ANY screenshots or official musings on the alleged upgrade? I'm not buying into any of the DX10 crap (for any game) without hard evidence.
As for the micro-machines comment, I think I agree. It's not about scale so much as about the lack of personality which AnimalMother has mentioned more than once now.

I have to agree that this game (just like the origenal TA) lacks the great atmosphere you get in msot other RTS games. The units look very generic, they look small (Because there's nothing to compare them with, except for trees. It may have been better if they added real infantery, but the number men would probably cause major problems to most pc's). Yes, the story is a joke, but none of these things are the game's main features.
The main features are the incredible ammount of units, tactics, strategy, etc. And if you forget the SP and don't care about atmosphere, this game really comes into it's element. This game shines at huge strategical battles between massive armies. Having 100 bombers attack a forward base while being under constant AA fire. Aircraft crashing all over the place taking AA guns with them, etc. Stuff like that makes this game so great.
Honestly, to best get a first experiance, have a friend come over with a decent laptop and play this game with eachother. I say with, not against because although you should destroy eachothers units, try not to attack eachoters buildings. Build some massive armies and get them to fight eachother. Learn from eachother, etc. Then, when that's done, turn on FOW and have a real battle!

everyone have praised/shunned the zooming out functionality. I think the zoom out feature is the core of this game. It seems like the devs made everything possible to make you THE supreme commander...of a RISK game. hell even red cubes ,dots, triangles are pure RISK style.
Strategy is about the finest art in all arts of war. Unfortunately, when moved into this game, the player will feel absolutely no bond to his army, and to the loss of any of his troops. heck even the destruction of his main unit is "rewarded" with a nuclear blast, that can kill your enemy main unit if you're close enough. This is the difference of approach with tactical RTS like command and conquer, where you focus more closely on battlefield and also micromanage more.
The build up of your base and army, which is focused, on rushing to build your defense while churning out the max of units is a poor attempt to make up for some micro management. If it could have been handed out to an AI assistant, or maybe a fixed number of troops with reinforcements like in wargames, player would actually focus on designing war moves. The AI does both perfectly well without the need to zoom out, check what his scout has discovered, enjoy a battlefield skirmitch, while building up other base installations. I can't without loosing ground.
Heck they could have added some camera effects if you win a game, like zoom in and rotate on the destruction of the enemy base, commander etc. it gives a rather unpolished feeling..
Bottom point is which you like most. For my personal taste, not caring for units, not having time to view and enjoy a good fightning with big explosions and not getting rewarded with good automated cinematics when i win/loose , isn't in my strategic philosophy

the numbers are not what wins or looses a battle, its the morale and motivation of its troops. every proper commander knows that.

Chris Taylor mentioned somewhere something that could explain why everything looks so lifeless. He said that war is the most horrible thing to happen to mankind. He hates it. He actually gets a little emotional about it. I guess it has something to do with his past or something.
On the other hand, it also facinates him. Not the human aspact, but moreso the strategical aspect. The "game" behind war.
That "game" behind war is what he tried to recreate, without any people actually suffering. Therefor, everything is done with lifeless robots instead of humans.
So yes, it's designed that way, altough I think it could be done better with added atmosphere.

Um, okay sure this is supposed to be in the future where AI's are very intelligent, but these are all robots. They dont have any emotion, motivation or morale
So ha!
But i seriously cant understand what you people mean with that the graphics are NOT great?? They look supergood to me. The subtle bloom, soft dust effects everywhere. The units and buildings are perfectly detailed and shaded, and not to mention self-shadowing and EVERYTHING recieves and casts shadows.
The fire and smoke and explosion effects are just purely amazing.
And im a dude that complained at Oblivion and X3 graphically
I actually tought the demo looked slightly even better than the demo, i dunno it just felt like the lighting was better, dunno if there is DX10 in the demo, doubt it, but it felt better.
It is The best looking RTS. Im not counting Company of Heroes tough, since that is a bit too "dusty" in my opinion. CoH looks great technically, but boy does it look dull and dusty.
In short, you ppl who claim that the game is ugly, or even just Not good looking. Geez, either get glasses or a better screen cuz there must be dust covering up the gorgeous graphics

I loved total annihilation, and I love this game.
If huge battles are not your thing and you prefer strategy games like warcraft 3 then tough luck... doesn't make this game bad though.

Only on nforce do you get people who complains about the graphics of an rts like Supreme Commander, now had it been an fps or an fprg then alright, but this kinda complaining is really quite laughable, alright you don't like the game fine, but stop complaining about it all the time and keep the thread for people who like the game to discuss it.

Epsilon, go play Gothic III and leave us to criticize it as we like. Just because you like it doesn't mean we have to, or for that matter don't talk about what we don't like.

SC Demo is fabulous. Much better experience than the older 38beta. Then again.. i went from a 7600gt to a 8800GTX w/ACS3 cooling. Whats more fantastic is the demo represents 1 faction of 3, doesn't have experiemental stuff, and drools over what the mod community will produce in the coming months. Lots to talk about when this is released.

Demo does have experimental units.
But indeed the demo runs better then the beta's for me.
But something else, did the remove the old "hold ALT + Scroll Wheel" for camera tilting?
