While the necessary files by default are loaded into main memory, Windows Vista has the ability to instead use alternate storage methods, such as USB flash drives, which, though not as fast as RAM, often can be significantly faster than a hard disk drive; thereby freeing up main memory.
SuperFetch also keeps track of what times of day that applications are used, which allows it to intelligently pre-load information that is expected to be used in the near future.

What it does is actually keep the most used programs in memory, so "fetching" them would be much much faster. So Vista takes some of the unused RAM and puts that data there. The good thing about SuperFetch is the memory is freed when needed. If you have 1GB ram, and need 768Mb of it for an app, Vista will free (not it in page file). The even better thing about SuperFetch is it make the system much faster and responsive.
Another thing you can notice is Vista tries to limit its memory usage (real usage + SuperFetch) to 1/2 or less the RAM avaible on the system.
When you open task manager, the figure you see is the real usage + SuperFetch. Vista will shrink when you need the RAM.
Now, ask why the hell would it take so much more memory. Why not? Do you have those sticks of RAM for the beauty of it? If the memory can be put to good use to make the system much faster, why not use it?

OOOK.. i don't get it:
i just installed the billgates version and checked dxdiag - it says dx10 so i tried to run a few games i had and all of them gave me a dx related problem, exept for just cause (and i could swear that it runs much better on vista for some reason). now i installed the directx that comes with SCDA and all of a sudden i can run any game i want.
what i don't get is how am i able to have 2 different dx versions at once and why do we need this 9.0L if we could just use the old 9.0c?

yes on vista , i can't chose 5.1 i have only stereo , but all my speakers are connected as in xp |
Had the same problem, tried the drivers i use in xp but i could only get stereo sound. My sound card is onboard soundmax and vista installed ac'97 drivers by default. So i installed realtek ac'97 vista beta drivers. I got 5.1 in sound options but with channel problems. Muting all input lines solved the problem with one glitch. Front and rear speakers were swapped so i changed their jack locations and it works great now.
Ah, btw, when i watch an ac3 movie with 5.1 sound, everything works fine except muting sound only mutes the front speakers

it is called prefetch.

superfetch is prefetch on steroids.

FFdshow works just fine.
btw WMP 11 looks good, not like the old crappy ones, I'll stick with mplayerc though.
The real problems are drivers with Vista. Creatives drivers (Audigy 2 ZS) suck big time, they made crap out of my first install in no time (Bluescreens, even one Redscreen ).
I've to use my integrated Realtek AC'97 which works 100%, I thought Creative and such companies care more then Realtek and the likes cause they have less costumers, cause even if you don't want to you have to buy a C-media or Realtek or similar chip with your mobo but no.
Nero 7.5.1.1 lite, WinRar, Winamp 5.2, Office 2007, Total Commander 6.55, Daemon tools work fine.

Goddammit, when I installed VISTA on a separate partition, it made it so I can no longer boot my XP-partition.
FFS!
I also think fisk should be unbanned.

Ouch, bad news as I have the same soundcard. Creative driver support has always sucked, though. I'll wait until next year to change to Vista for now.

VISTA doesn't utilize any BOOT.INI, that's XP.
The problem is that VISTA threw the drive-letters around, and switched active device.
Took me the whole damn night to figure that out.
Now finally XP is working again, and I'm removing VISTA as of now.
The driver-support just fucking sucks.

When booting, Windows doesn't care about drive letters. It cares about HD and Partition numbers, which aren't moddable. Use VistaBootPro to edit the Vista boot manager to read the old Boot.ini and then edit Boot.ini to point to XP.
