really good, solid gameplay.
LOTR battle for middle earth will be better though. better graphics and gameplay and also better A.I.
Rome is so very good though.

you can't know that, can you?
Imho the only advantage Battle for middle earth will have are is a more effectfull graphical presentation (more effects). Which doesn't mean that Rome doesn't look as good. its a fact that rome will be able to display a much bigger number of soldiers than the total war engine (which is just an updated cc generals engine), so battles will look more epic.
And in terms of gameplay... We cant say for sure. But everything points out that rome will have the far better gameplay, higher complexity etc. And the interface can't be done much better than its solved in rome.

yeah i guess you can say thats rights. but from what ive seen in the video diary's on their website, LOTR a.i. seems a tad more better, example a troll comes running up gondor soldiers, the soldiers back away and are afraid, while in ROME 12 elephants are coming at you and they charge head on.
the gameplay will aslo be more efficient. if you see the videos they have these cools menus that pop up when you need them and hide when you dont. Just watch the videos you will know what i mean

Combat in Rome Total War is meant to be abstract so those kind of immersion factors wouldn't be needed, though welcome.
Having said that, I do see the men running away from the Elephants amid all the chaos that ensues, and with particularly weak or broken troops they will run even on sight of the beasts.
LOTRs artificial intelligence doesn't seem better, all you have been privy to is media blurb - it's their favourite tactic - buzzwords and easily packaged features that inspire, but I doubt they add anything significant to the overall gaming experience that it changes mine opinion - it's fluff.
All they have done is program it so when they come into vicintity they do this scripted routine. Big deal - it's not intelligent.
I don't think the AI is perfect in Rome Total War either, certainly not from the demo, but I will wait until it's released before making a final conclusion - historical scenarios are rigid battles in my experience... and this one wasn't a particularly good example - have to wait for the campaign to really get a feel for how the generals respond as there will be no predifined movements there.

it's impossible to say what BFME will be like.
The videos they got out showed prettied up stuff that has been cut together and makes no sense at all.
Westwood is indeed known for making their games look much better than the actually are before the release. Like those Tiberian Sun screenshots that really looked nice and that game looked so crappy in game.
They probably just took it to the next level by creating modified videos instead of screenshots.
And about the AI, I mean...what the hell..I can see why a group of 10 soldiers runs away from a troll. But would an army of 2000 soldiers run away from 10 trolls? I think not unless they already took heavy casualties or are outnumbered overall in which case your army would also run away from elephants in Rome.

yeah, I remember when Tiberian suns enviroment was touted as being highly interactive & integral to the gameplay. My experience was fairly different I'll say

its not 2000 troops. have you even seen the videos?
and no its not buzzwords either..
OMG looks its a video oh shit thats an awsome way to get me to buy the game..pffff.
And no its not programed either. If you read prieviews and hands-on material then you would know what you are talking about.
And its not impossible to see what a game will be like, again by reading reviews and hands-on material (and believe me their are a lot out there) you would have a general idea of what it has to offer compared to other stradegy games. Thats with every game you read about.
But lets not make this forum out BFME..
nonetheless i think ROME will be a solid stradegy game...but in my mindnot worth spending the money..so far.

I just meant that rome is a little bigger than BFME. I didnt say that there 2000 troops in BFME, but there are 2000 in Rome from time to time. I was just saying that you can't expect 2000 trained soldiers to cower in fear when they see an elephant. You can expect 10 soldiers to cower in fear when they see a troll like it is in BFME but not 2000.
And Previews are done on Preview versions that are far from final versions and only offer very restricted gameplay that's set up. Like the preview version that most mags have consists of 3 missions based on the movies, however you dont know how you manage the soldiers on the tactical map, what you can do on the tactical map, how the amount of soldiers you get from start of a battle is determined, how you get the ability to summon the balrog,....
We have a demo of Rome here, we can all see how it is, but we don't have a demo of BFME.
We have videos, we have screenshots, but we don't have a demo.
So until I get a chance to play a game I won't let previews and videos done by the developers tell me how great it's gonna be.
Black and White also got great previews and we had screenshots and videos of it showing how awesome it is and it sucked in the end...
Reviews can be trusted as review copies are basically the final game. But Previews only give you very very rough info and anything in a preview copy is subject to changes.

it is hard but once u get hold of the shortcuts its a great game. they do neatly arrange nice and always stay in the right formation i.e archers backoff when they can. this game is so damn good even though the camera can be a lil bit of a pain its still spectacular. idk if this can live up to HL2 but its a damn good rts, i think bfme is gonna struggle to keep up with this. the sound is also great and the dust that rises is amazing too. only things i dont like are things like "329 BC" etc. kinda spoils it in a way but its still great.

That's why you will be able to let the AI control parts of your army. That way you can focus on your most important troops while the AI handles the basic stuff and acts according to what you do. (at least that's what I read, gotta wait and see if it's really like that)

They should make a mod for this and do "Attack of the clones", at least there would be a good excuse for having every texture looking exactly the same.

holy crap
I suppose the latest generation of graphics card doesnt have a problem with rendering a few models many, many, manymanymany times.
Just wonder if the Radeon 9xx0 and FX 5xx0 can handle those really
end-game big battles with several thousands soldiers.

that's not funny, it's simply not possible with todays hardware to display up to 10000 units where each of em looks different.
We'll probably see that in the next Total War game.

Activision are "men of the people".
They maked a game that can run smoothly on every average comp.
You, stupid rich american, think that the whole world is rich, happy, and fat.
But some people are poor, and cant afford a "w00t P4 800 3800mhz 5000mb ram w/ 6800ultra !!1!!oneone".
No "elite" game. And try (I think I ask too much for your minor intelligence) to accord more importance for the game itself, instead of its look.
Play Hearts of Iron, and try to say somethin different than "Aaah ugly like 45453453 yo, pass"

on the install you need a p3 1ghz sumthin sumthin. i have a p4 3.06 1536mb ram and a 4200Ti. i only experienced minimal lag when ALLLLLL my troops were fighitn ALLLLLLL of the enemy on my screen. i had all my settings on the highest except the res which was 1024 x32. Still a great game and in the tutorial part there was an alliance and you couldnt atack the allied members which was good but woulda added a nice twist. only a few things i would change about this and that would be the realism and blood. for instance arrows dont harm team mates neither does horses running through your footmen. overall id give this game a 9/10 on the basis that there are more tropps and deployable tactics in the final relase which im certain. as of now its still a 7/10. and i compared it to BFME because thats what everyone else is comparin it to and with release dates so close u cant help but talk about them. I wouldnt be surprised if this game does get overlooked by a lot of the public yet gets awards from all the top magazines.

I am sure ther is friendly fire in the demo.
I have been shooting way to many of my own troops with my archers.
Indeed it would be really nice to see blood and gore in this game.

Friendly fire is indeed implented. You must be careful using those war elephants, since once givena direction and running, they dont take the time look for a way around every single soldier. SAme with archers, arrows kill everyone.
As for engine handling many troops. So far I haven't experienced a single performance problem, even during the greatest fights everything runs smooth.
and try out this mod:

you play tutorial war as gauls. Battle rocks;)
