 I guess that depends on the monitor because on my 19" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930sb CRT monitor ,1280 x 960 look stretched and like shit while 1280 x 1024 looks perfect and non stretched.

 This is a load of bullcrap. If you draw a cricle on an LCD monitor which has a native resolution of 1280x1024 it is still a circle! This goes for both games and Windows.
 |
 You need to be less ignorant. 1280x1024 is 5:4, NOT 4:3. Difference is, ofcourse, very little, so you wont easily see stretched circle. I on the other hand have 17" CRT and got ahold of 19" LCD to play with for a week, once I loaded BF2 on LCD, previously perfect circle radar was now little stretched. Very annoying. Or you can load any full screen (4:3) video with a player that wont stretch it and you'll see black bars at the bottom and top. If you still are too ignorant to take what I say is true, just do simple math 1024/768=1.3(3)=4:3 and 1280/1024=1.25=5:4.

 Very weird CRT monitor you got there, 19" and max res is only 1280x1024. Guess your monitor is 5:4, that would explain stretched image at 1280x960. Is it also stretched at 1024x768?

					| I don't understand. The increase from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 is exactly 256 each way... if I did a similar increase to a vector image for example it wouldn't be stretched - it'd just be a linear increase? | |

 Bullshit. If you can choose 1280x1024 the image will not look distorted in any way in the game.

 Movies and stretched image is a totaly different thing since the area that can be shown is limited, the technology for game engines isnt limited like that at all, even you know that if you think a little.. It's possible to show a game engine in 1280x100 without any distortion if there was such a monitor and if the engine supported that resolution.

					| Good poll, but I'll rather have both highres..say 1280x1024 & 4XAA.

 eh, 1024 and 768 are 2 different values, so if you increase them both by the same value, then of course the ratio wont stay the same.

					| 800x600     -> good
1024x768   -> bad
 1152x864   -> good
 1280x1024 -> good

 ..that's based on what i read years ago, when friggling around with 3ds.
 VGA,XGA,Vesa,Ascii...
 load an *.nfo into Notepad or any Damn viewer - for me the graphics always look like crap
 (distortion-wise).

 I don't know much about DirectX or OpenGL specifications... but if a circle is round it's round.
 Trust your eyes

 btw.: i voted AA

 games like nfsu2,mw look stretched on 1280*1024[cars look like someone hit it with hammer] but 1280*960 it's ok

 Then it's not properly done, there's no reason why it should look like that, the devs must have fucked up, probaly just lazy and didnt do it correctly.

 I dont know if this helps
 640x480  x2   1280x960
 800x600  x2   1600x1200
 1024x768  x2  2048x1536 (a little hard for monitors/cards to see this)

 So as you can see 1280 x 1024 is not the max resolution of the monitor (far from that actually).However i do play most of my games at that resolution (85hz) since i get the best performence/visual quality ratio for my 6800 GT there.Also notice that it says that 1280 x 1024 is supported while it doesn't mention 1280 x 960

 And yes as i mentionned in my previous post , it does look stretched at 1280 x 960 but it doesn't at 1024 x 768 , 1280 x 1024 or 1600 x 1200.Don't ask me why but that's how it is That's why i'm pissed when games don't support 1280 x 1024 and i have to force it via the paned or a tweak.

					| The process of eliminating “jagged” edges on computer-generated text and graphics. Anti-aliased graphics have their edges slightly blurred and mixed with background colors to eliminate the jagged, stairstepping patterns that can occur on diagonal, or curved lines
 www.camcorder-info.com/video-terms-and-abbriviation/
 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Smoothing or blending the transition of pixels in an image. Anti-aliasing the edges on a graphic image makes the edges appear smooth, not jagged.

 www.smallbiz.nsw.gov.au/smallbusiness/Technology+in+Business/Information+Technology/IT+Glossary/
 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Technique used to hide or conceal jagged lines in games. For example, picture a diagonal suspension cable on a bridge in a videogame. If the game is running in low resolution, the cable will look jaggy, blocky, and unnatural. In order to fix this problem, the game must be run under a higher resolution (which will make the jaggies less noticeable), or they (the programmers) blur the edges. Think of it as smearing vaseline on a camera's lens.

 I hope that helps

 *EDIT: Can one of the mods add the "Both" option to the poll please*

 If a game is running full screen at at 1280x960 on a 4:3 monitor, then it will not look distorted, but if a full screen 1280x1024 resolution was used on a 4:3, the it would look distorted, as the pixels are not square any more.

 Ofc. any game can run at any resolution in windowed mode without distortion, as then the image aren't stretched to fill the screen.
