What happened to the sound effect of this game?
It's almost inaudible.

Yes it has, play more campaign |
I dont play RTS games for campaign styles.....
Me play it for Lan and Multiplayer games...
I mean dont get me wrong.. its a cool game.. but nothing "omfg amazing" about it |
In my opinion this is the best rts currently out there unless you want to go back and play Total Annihilation, but i've played that for years needed something new with fancier graphics And without orcs elves or any of that crap.

Hmm...installed it this morning and started playing the Campaign...a cupple of levels. Its ok, but...well its just that it has this seen that, done that, been there sort a feel to it. I realy do like the angle with the steam tech and the Jules Verne style machines. But is that enough I wonder...

HOMM V is...Ok its a round based strategy bla bla bla with some RPG elements thrown in. Actually playing it and enjoing it. And whats that got to do with it ? Rise of Legends is still ok but its just nothing special. An ok RTS nothing more nothing less. What my classification of another game has to do with that is beyond me. HOMM V is still an TBS/RPG if you ask me. And if you'r that ignorant as to hold that against me..."well sodd off Baldric"

its hard to bring innovation to a genre as mature as RTS. what makes rise of nations series good is the extreme attention on gameplay mechanics, making it one of the best, if not the best balanced RTS around. it shines on MP, and thats what RTS is about!

Sometime I wonder if you guys writing here actualy works as devs for some of the games the way you are so protective against your latest acquisitions.
Take a new car for example, lets take the new LEXUS GS hybrid. I don't like it that much I must say, an average looking car with some new jap technic thrown in. Thats my opinion based on my taste whitch is based upon alot of different parameters whitch I will not go into here. But alot of ppl will like it and buy it. I don't question that, thats thier 40-45.000$.
All I am saying is, every body is entiteld to have an opinion based on their experience. Every game launched WILL not apeal to ALL!, and all games are not made by the best story writers, programmers and CG artists, they can't be. There is only so many realy realy good guys out there, like in every proffession. So we get some good games some not so. And life goes on like it always have. No biggy...realy, or?

Played and beaten the first campaign on normal (moderate) difficulty setting :
Here is my mini review
Scenarios are good and the layout can change (a little) the tactics you use to play the game. i like the world map mode to pick your mission it feels you're planning your campaign
However in the main game the strategy involved is minimal at best, though i'm experienced rts player i had no need to vary my general building strategy (focus on market - steam with 2 city till you reach +700 crystal/minute, then stream build anything you want) .
I didn't noticed any particular reason to build an unit instead of another.. once you get enough resources (5-10 minutes in every scenario) you can just build an average mix of everything and just throw all to the opponent.
At first i organized unit into groups , flanking position with cavalry/air unit..ecc there is just no need.
Select 20 unit or so and attack the nearest city/mine , then regroup and redo till you capture/destroy anything.
At the moment i'm unimpressed by the game.
I'll try the second campaign at hardest difficulty settings and i'll tell you what i find out

RTS is a dead genre, i try one every half year, and it is all more of the same. 90 % of rts games are C&C clones (the first one). Nothing has changed on 15 years. I realy don''t understand why al that crap is being made. I only liked the c&c series, starcraft, total annilation, perimiter (way to hard though) and konan, but that one becomes old fast. Bad score for 15 years of rts games.

That's nonsense - 15 years ago, Dune 2 didn't even exist. Only 10 years ago C&C was released and since then a lot has changed:
- 3D maps alter tactics
- heroes
- building powers
- all different kinds of fog of war
- unit stances (defensive, agressive, scouting, etc.)
- building upgrades
- Sidequests
- unit upgrades
- units you can design yourself
etc.
What IS true is that in the past 5 years, things haven't changed much - but saying it barely changed in the past 15 years is silly. What changes now is the story, the setting, map design, mission design, and other things that are more important.
For example I totally LOVED C&C when I played it all over a few months ago - so it's not the game mechanics that make a good game. It's how well the story is carried through, how fun the map design is, etc.
The main problem with RTS games these days is that the maps are designed in such a way that real strategy gets hampered. C&C had very open map design, letting you tackle most maps in dozens of different ways according to your playing style. Most recent RTS want to add a story element inside one mission, and as a result, they have to force you in a linear direction which hurts the fun.

Don't get me wrong.
The game is still fun, now played some scenario in the alin campaign...the gameplay is different and here there are lots more units, however even so i still feel you just need to build 3-4 different units and throw them at your enemy to win most battles.
BTW do you like the 'infinite resource' system we have in RoL ?
It's very different from 'average' rts approach and imho can be easily exploited to avoid all form of micromanagement and is one of the worst aspect of the game
(just have lot of resource in and then nastro-build regardless of losses)

I have an even better strategy - building fortresses up to the enemie's base, thus making my territory push back theirs, making their health go down and putting guard towers around it.

Try playing it against human opponents. Whining about how you can beat the computer by throwing a mass of units at it is pointless.
Oh, red_avatar, if they have researched the right tech that strategy won't work either, which any player who is not a complete noob will do.

Anyway great game, live up to its previous installment (especially on the engine) huge cities, giant armies, big maps and neutral nations on the battlefield makes it quite enjoyable though the AI may lack behind a little...
