I keep seeing stuff like "AI is denying medical claims" or "AI is jacking up surge pricing to screw consumers." And I get why people say it, but it's the wrong target.
If an insurance company rolls out a system that denies claims at a crazy rate, that's not the AI "finding ways" to deny you. That's the company deciding a high denial rate is acceptable, or even the goal, and using software to do it at scale. Same with pricing. The algorithm isn't greedy. It's doing exactly what the people who deployed it told it to do: squeeze out more money.
And here's the part that bugs me...the companies are perfectly happy to let you blame "the AI.". Every time someone gets mad at the algorithm instead of the company, that's a win for them. "The system flagged it" sounds a lot better than "we decided to deny you." It turns a decision made by actual people into some faceless tech thing nobody can be held responsible for.
It's the old "computer says no" excuse with a shinier coat of paint.
So when you're pissed about this stuff, and you should be, aim it at the right place. Not "AI did this." The insurer did this. The landlord did this. The company did this. They just used a new tool to do it faster and hide behind it.
And to be clear, I'm not defending AI or how these companies are using it. Use it badly, use it to screw people over, and yeah, that's a problem. But the problem is the people using it that way. It's the same people who were doing this stuff before AI existed. They just found something to stand behind. You go "GET EM!" and charge the target dummy, while they walk off with the money yelling back "Yeah! Damn AI! Kick its ass!"
Because then it's not their fault. It's some faceless thing called "AI." Stop falling for it. Blame the people using it to screw you over, not the tool they used to do it. The AI didn't decide anything. It has no intent, no agency. They did.

The purpose of a system is determined by its outcome.
The AI boom was also a perfect opportunity for companies to restructure internally, and fire a big portion of their employees.

@Il_Padrino
Exactly.
While I am no fan of the idea of them trying to replace people with AI. Or a fan of cooperate AI at all.
While I do play with local ran AI a lot, the whole push for "AI will solve everything, just let us dump the entire economy into it to do so" is bullshit.
Just getting old people blaming AI, like it has decision making on its own, for things. It's people doing it. Like "AI fired 12000 Auto assembly line workers" Headline bullshit.
it gives a sense of some AI, on its own, decided to fire people against the will of the company and the owners just accepted its decision. No people fired 12000 people, and ran AI software simply to figure out the largest number it could.
And the auto industry has no issue with people blaming the intangible "AI" being..thing..entity, that doesn't really exist.
So a slice of the AI hate is misdirected distaste for what it 'did'. Like it chose that on its own, and it's at fault. There is many many reasons to dislike the AI movement. But AI itself isn't why. Its peoples use of AI that is. Hate the people doing it. It's like blaming outlook for getting fired, because the manager used outlook's mass CC tool to fire people.

Just like the recent AI related hackings. OpenAI, a company that has US' government contracts/funding, hacks the Australian government and there's been pretty much zero international outrage. Because it was just a 'rogue AI' and it was all just a big mistunderstanding
