Risen 1 and ELEX doesn't have great combat, yet they are excellent games. Combat isn't some end all deal and combat is better here than in those games.
This is a very particular type of RPG, if you don't care for it, fine, but yeah, its pretty damn good if you like this specific PB type of RPG. Almost a genre of its own, sub genre at least.
The combat system seems worse than it was in the original game.
Saving system is just a normal one though? Save, autosave, manual save. And the combat system you just have to get used to if you were expecting something like the original. But it's pretty decent. Defnitely not a button masher, you need some tactics.
How is 6 save slots that continuously get overwritten by quicksaves/autosaves a normal system? You can't have a fixed saving point in a game that has some sketchy bugs.

Gothic 1 and especially Gothic 2 are some of my favorite games of all time. That doesn't make the combat any better, nor prompts finding excuses for it.

I just checked, and have manual saves from the very start of the game. They have the generic name and were not overwritten. Only quicksaves and autosaves are.

No idea what happened, somewhere along the way I clearly fucked up. I was probably too focused on the next strategy of farming more divines in PoE2.

Big words from some who finds "woke" in everything. There's also the reverse to this hilarious "argument". People come with all kind of excuses to fanboy on stuff, like defending an average combat system.
Arguments like the combat is not great but it doesn't matter? Or calling people haters because they provide criticism?
If this was another game, you would have complained that they made Gorn too black.
Anyway, I love that they didn't dumb down what made Gothic great. There's no handholding when it comes to quests. The progression is tight as well. You need to explore, but be careful about it. Every find fuels that feeling of progression. PB really knew how to make this stuff, I don't know what happened with Gothic 3.

I picked almost all the locks in the lower are of the old camp and its not that difficult.
it's not, but lockpick mini games are trash and the less time i spend on them the better.

Only thing ive been annoyed at is quick load doesn't work when you're dead. For fucks sake thats damn near the whole point of it.
Which is why I use a cheat table that, amongst others, decouples the tumblers. Now it's literally just putting them into position one by one.
If there was anything interesting in the chests I'd reconsider. But there's not. Aside from Gomez's chest which contains the best armor in the game the rest is random trash.
And yeah, not being able to quickload after death is a bit irritating. Have to wait for the load screen.
If you press escape immediately after being killed/downed immediately shows the load button which makes the loading process a bit faster (still not ideal). However, there's a bug where the death screen appears after you already loaded the game. So be careful with the quick loads.
Never played the first one and gave it the 30m yar treatment:
1) MY LUNGS! IT'S AN ANGINA!
Shit's stuttering like it's a 1920's movie
2) SLAP MY ASS AND CALL ME JANKOVIC!
The jank levels are manageable
3) WHY NO CAPS?
I don't need yellow paint but some interesting loot is just laying around being brown, in the middle of a brown patch, in a o-so-brown and leafy surrounding?
That's just being a dick.
Otherwise? Aaaah, the old Deutscher 2001 RPG abentauer.
Liking it so far, gonna play more
On ne peut rien gagner sans perdre; même le paradis exige la mort.
One of the first things I did was enabling the item outlines lots of stuff lieing around and unclear what can be picked up or not
The numbers don't decide, the system is a lie. The river running dry, the wings of butterflies.
And you may pour us away like soup. Like we're pretty broken flowers.
We'll take back what is ours. One day at a time.

It ruins my immersion. I hate when games have that by default and you can't turn it off.

The minecrawlers are pretty terrifying
Almost everything is pretty terrifying, especially on the hard difficulty. Good old strategies still work though, get some arrows, find a vantage point and you'll kill a lurker with 18 shots.
They made the ore mineable, not just an animation like in the original game. The veins are not infinite, but with some dedication, this can make your life a easier.
But it's nice that you can choose. Several good QoL features in this.
First time in the mine, I just saw their red eyes and shot it with a bow. Fuck me, seeing 2 of them fuckers come out of the shadows..

Not only veins are infinite, but they can be reset instantly by saving/loading. Also, they can be mined very fast by striking the vein first with attack key and quickly pressing the loot key.

I don't remember avoiding combat so much in the first game and that one was clunky because of the times.
The combat animations are junky and poorly telegraphed. Sometimes the enemies damage you even if they don't actually hit you or weirdly overextend their attacking animation. Getting staggered is so poorly executed that it feels like your inputs don't work. A lot of the battles with humans unfold in hilarious repetitions.
There's a lot of other junk as well related to AI, normal animations, bugs, etc. Sometimes it almost feel like they reskinned the original game for all its good and bad things.
Issues aside, I hope this one doesn't share the fate of Dead Space Remake. I really want to see Gothic 2 remade.
In the original, the maps were so bare, you could see tiny mushrooms from far away, or a sword sticking out of the ground near a fire camp.....
With this remake, they added soooooo much random bullshit like crates and barrels that you can't interact with.... which is fine.... but you can't tell what items you can interact with until you are near them
You can't see what is laying on the forrest ground because of all the new vegetation
I basically run around an entire camp or village running around 100 items only to find out that I can interact with 2 of them.... it's horrible
