There is an 300m asteroid that NASA says will come 1.4 as close as the moon is to us, but they keep changing the figures, they dont seem to know exactly where it will go. It's supposed to arrive on the 28th or 29th. The world leaders are all heading to Switzerland on that date for a "world summit", which happens to be right next to the world's largest nuclear bunker. Also there is basically a media blackout on it in America and Europe.

its 300m accross ffs.. it will barely make a hole on a mountain. By the time it burns through the atmosphere it will be like 50m or even less, surely?

This incident seems to differ from your opinion.
Quote:

The Tunguska Event, sometimes called the Tunguska explosion, was a massive explosion that occurred near the Podkamennaya (Lower Stony) Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai of Russia, at around 7:17 a.m. on June 30, 1908 Julian (July 13 on Gregorian calendar).

The explosion was most likely caused by the air burst of a large meteoroid or comet fragment at an altitude of 5–10 kilometers (3–6 miles) above Earth's surface. Different studies yielded varying estimates for the meteor's size,[1] including 30 meters,[2] 50 metres,[3] 60 metres,[4] 90 to 190 metres,[5] and up to 1200 metres in diameter.[6] Although the meteor or comet is considered to have burst prior to hitting the surface, this event is still referred to as an impact event. Estimates on the energy of the blast include 3–5 megatons[7] and as high as 30 megatons[8] of TNT. 10–15 megatons has been considered the most likely to be accurate[8] — about 1,000 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.[9] The explosion felled an estimated 80 million trees over 2,150 square kilometers (830 square miles). It is estimated to have measured 5.0 on the Richter scale.

The Tunguska event is the largest impact event in recent history. An explosion of this magnitude had the potential to devastate large metropolitan areas had it occurred over a large city.[10] This possibility has helped to spark discussion of asteroid deflection strategies.

OK so maybe I shouldnt take The Simpsons asteroid episode as reliable Laughing

Even if it hits the chances of it hitting land is like pissing from the eifel tower into a milk bottle top on the ground, so dont worry about it. The good old blue will eat it up. (im denying it hitting, can you tell?)

Well it looks like it will only kill people in about a 500 mile radius if it hits land. If it hit an ocean there would be some tidal waves and the like. Not too worried.

I had a terrible dream some years ago.
I wanted to visit my parents - I had no car that day, so i used the train.
I left the train and walked to a bus stop - It`s only 50 meters away. suddenly I heard a sound and the day became unnaturally bright. I turned around and I saw a bright light, like a gigantic rocket or a comet. it was coming down at a very fast pace - hard to say how far away the impact was. People screamed and started running and then air was burning and the ground was shaking as if a giant hit earth. then nothing. my head exploded

I woke up and was shaking...

I never had such an intense dream before - and never after. It was so real. everything looked real, I could smell the air and hear people scream, i felt the earth moving, it was physical pain when the shockwave hit me. I could not remember any dream after that one for years, and I doesn`t dream very often now... to be precise, i can`t remember when I dreamed the last time.

so everytime I hear such a story... well... I know its bogus, but... well...

I had a dream where I was trying to fly by flapping my arms while a dog was chasing me by jumping across rooftops. Think it means something?

LOS ANGELES (AP) — An asteroid at least 500 feet long will make a rare close pass by Earth next week, but there is no chance of an impact, scientists reported Thursday.

The object, known as 2007 TU24, is expected to whiz by Earth on Tuesday with its closest approach at 334,000 miles, or about 1.4 times the distance of Earth to the moon.

The nighttime encounter should be bright enough for medium-sized telescopes to get a glimpse, said Don Yeomans, manager of the Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which tracks potentially dangerous space rocks.

However, next week's asteroid pass "has no chance of hitting, or affecting, Earth," Yeomans said.

An actual collision of a similar-sized object with Earth occurs on average every 37,000 years.

Spotted last October by the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona, 2007 TU24 is estimated to be between 500 feet and 2,000 feet long. The next time an asteroid this size will fly this close to Earth will be in 2027.

Scientists plan to point the Goldstone radar telescope in California and the Arecibo radar telescope in Puerto Rico at the asteroid and observe its path before and after its closest approach to Earth. Researchers will use instruments to measure its rotation and composition.

The 2007 TU24 rendezvous comes a day before another asteroid is projected to pass close to Mars.

Scientists have effectively ruled out a collision between the Red Planet and the asteroid 2007 WD5, estimating it will pass at a distance of more than 16,000 miles from the Martian surface. Initial observations of the Mars-bound asteroid put the odds of an impact at 1 in 25, but scientists later dropped the odds to 1 in 10,000.

Or a cataclysmic event that will start a chain reaction in ecology that will make its way arond the world more like it.

I guess it is more of a time scale. That would prob be a blink of an eye in comparison to the age of the earth. Ergo cataclysmic even right?

Yes, At least the dinosaurs evolved. Some branched off and became mammals and birds. I think the same thing will happen with people. Kinda like the books and movies. Maybe less dramatic tho and less high tech.

The earth needs a good reset anyway. Start from scratch clean itself up.

Mass extinction events are actually quite common in the earth's history. It's just never happened in our tiny time frame or recorded history. But they do happen and there's very little (yes I know, Bruce Willis Very Happy) we can do to prevent it. However man is best prepared to survive/recover from such an event.

I saw a docu on discovery some time back about a comet strike and it's very sobering to think that only a very few previleged people will survive. I mean surviving the initial strike might be just a question of going below ground (underground train systems would be ideal) but surviving the aftermath will require some effort.

Eeew! Razz I was actually referring to surviving in terms of living off what remaining food-stocks there are till the crops/trees/wildlife recover. We have lost our survival skills and watching Ray Mears on tv doesn't cut it. Very Happy Living without our iPods? Is that even possible? Shocked
