Damn, if PC Gamer thinks its derpified i can't wait to read the reviews from nfohumpers.

Quote:
I get the sense that The Dark Ages' heavy mechanical pruning is in service of making it the most accessible, instantly enjoyable Doom for the most people. If that's the case, then mission accomplished. It's still Doom, so it's still very fun. The last two set the bar absurdly high, and being in their shadows still makes The Dark Ages one of the best singleplayer FPSes around.

I suspect its throttled pace will make The Dark Ages the most comfortable of the series to play with a controller. Customizable difficulty will help, too: A long list of toggles and sliders let me tune everything from projectile speeds and parry windows to exact damage values. That's a win for everybody.

Yeah, what a win. Instead of balancing the game properly just have a bunch of sliders players are supposed to adjust Laughing

Quote:
The Dark Ages' levels are especially simplistic next to the mazes and jungle gyms of the last two games. Presumably to accommodate all the slow-moving projectiles and the Slayer's wimpy new jump, most maps are massive, flat, and devoid of hazards—like id took Doom 2016's winding corridors and pressed them into a pancake. I like that they're more friendly to backtracking than ever, with areas spoking off a central platform, but a few of the larger maps had me sprinting across empty deserts way too often.

Secrets are still scattered literally everywhere, but the majority of them are so obviously placed and announced by the map that I rarely felt like I was discovering something. It's another area where Eternal had more to offer: Those ultra-hard, opt-in challenge rooms? Gone. Now puzzles just give you an extra life or more gold to buy upgrades. At least those platforming sections that a lot of folks hated (but I loved) demanded a quick reflex test to get to the side goodies.

exactly, stick to ur guts like u did eternal, seems they knew it was too slow and also too easy. it was very obvious the minute they announced this "feature". same with the dragon and mech sections nobody seems to like them Laughing

The gamification of games is one of the most disappointing trends the industry could pursue since it's at the expense of atmosphere and immersion, which are among the aspects I value the most. I've never been a big fan of Doom 3's gunplay and level design but, credit where credit is due, its approach is still much more appealing to me than whatever is going on in the new flashy hybrid thing for the Gamepass couchpeople.

Don't worry, i'm sure it'll come back once people get tired of the newer style games. They'll also pay journalists to use the phrase "return to form" in their reviews so we all know it's worth the $89.99 price tag

The video starts with him saying the game is one of the most technically impressive, while he shows a game that's not all that technically impressive.

This is exactly what I had in mind while watching this!

It's an ultra static world. Nothing to interact with, no props to move, destroy, pick up. NADA. Just mobs to shoot, in a fixed, immovable environment. Like, WTF man!? What's so impressive about this shit that's already done by 20 years old games... ?!

Rolling Eyes

Eh, the guy has become an expert with words, hence he's also an expert at shilling. But it's dissimulated behind 'valid' "assumptions". See what I did there?!

People don't call him shillup for nothing. Laughing

Ahem...

Still, his discourse is enjoyable, some of his points make sense and the coherence is - imo - commendable.

Or buy PC Gamepass for $15 and have a month to play it. At least for SP anyway.

That looks awful

There's a part where there's 2 zombies slowly walking to you on a bridge, and the player is doing all of these crazy moves, and that's the only place the chaos is coming from. The zombies are just slowly walking towards the camera, no threat or speed. But a billion weapon animations + powers are filling the screen.

It never ceases to amaze me how a winning formula can be thrown out the window for whatever this is

The LGR review showed a lot of destructible environment. Nothing groundbreaking, but a lot of stuff broke during the fights.

He also states it's sponsored by nvidia, so...
