I've done a fair share of Mp in my time. I'm pretty much done with it now. It's not the games, its modern gamer mentality. Today's gamer, plays a game solo for about 30 mins, googles guide, copies someone with 1000 hours of game knowledge build / advice. It sucks. Even in closed personal friend groups, it takes less than 1 day before 1-2 or 3 people have googled the most OP builds, Best Skill combo, Exploit A B or C. Less than a day and gameplay loop is broken.
win at all cost, google best OP guide -> no one actually plays games anymore. Moar Single-player games plz.
/rant.

Difference is that many games today have such massive customization options that you feel lost or exhausted. In those old times you chose some simple abilities or stats and thats it.

Till date, the only multiplayer I've liked was in CS1.6/CZ/Source and Svencoop. Hated CS:GO and there's been no new version of Svencoop
1 and 2 are still amazing.

Just give me back my old school MP gaming where you get what you pay for and none of this autistic fucking "progression" where I gotta grind out bullshit to use what I paid for.
I'm having a blast as fuck with Ground Branch and Ready or Not online with friends for this very reason. You get your gear, go play with it.

Maybe I got lucky with the personal gaming friends part. Unless its a sim game I enjoy playing alone. Id say 75% of my gaming time is multiplayer, but 0% of it is with randos. Unless the game requires it then its me and my friends playing, that just happens to have other people around.
And I say lucky, because over the 20 years as people come and go from the group we all have the same sort of outlook: Dont read a guide, dont read the manual, hell skip tutorial if you can and lets do it the hard way of figure out how things work until we all grow tired of that or learned all we can, then all see what the most outlandish thing we can make/do/build is and do that for a while too.
But maybe it's the birds of a feather flock together sentiment of why we all are the same wavelength. New people that come to the voice chat/gaming with us did so because they also play that way and knew someone in there they already played with. And those that dont get frustrated or eventually wander off to more enjoyable to them groups of other gamer types.
Two of what I would call my best friends and fellow gamers I have known for 20+ years. Talk to everyday. And one I have never actually met in person. I honestly couldnt tell you what he looks like in the past 10 years (last pic I saw of him) I could probably pass him on the street and have no idea who he is. The other Ive been in person with maybe 2 weeks total out of the 20 years..and thats because he got me the job I have and had to train me (Work from home so I only was at his house 2 weeks).
But we have been gaming together for 20 years (and think a lot alike when it comes to game..have to I guess to do it for 20 years), so I think us being the 'OG's of the small group of people we have, sort of filters the sort of people that wander in.

All these new MP games are hero based, esports oriented so of course people will read those guides to understand how to play a specific character and have a chance against others.
I really had high hopes for Battlefield...

Still playing TF2 from time to time. It's still a good game, cheaters get voted out in 10 seconds or so, so it's not too bad.
PC: Yes. Console: No.

Every time I think to try that game again I'm reminded that those people are on a level I'll never get to so I just get stomped on lol

I used to play multiplayer from time to time but nowadays, whether it's because I'm morphing into an asocial old fart or simply because I've lost the appetite for modern nuonline action, I just don't feel the urge anymore. Maybe I'll get back to it, maybe not, who knows really. I have great memories of all the moments spent playing Battlefield 3/4 and Bad Company 2 with the fellow Humpers though, those were a blast
Same with Fifa 13/14, the various driving games and Rocket pew-pew League. Back in the day, I enjoyed the good ol' UT/UT2004, CS:S, TF2, L4D2 (versus only), Project Reality, Red Orchestra and so forth, not to mention rFactor and its numerous ghetto servers with all sorts of mods as well as the top-notch trolling sessions.

There was also that time we had that huge Minecraft server that was fun for a while, until I accidentally burned everyone's home down

I stopped shooters ages ago because anyone can aimbot and bypass anticheat in 2mins google.
Arpg 90% of players copy paste build guides and act smug. Poe.ninja is proof of that.
Crafting/survival games still kind of work
RTS has a wide skill floor, i always easily beat friends, i get wrecked vs. randoms.
MMO, once you have played 1 you have played them all, meh.
That's pretty much state of MP 2022.

Personally haven't bothered with MP in well over a decade, the last game i flogged to death was RTCW which is far and away the best MP experience i've ever had.
From what i've seen many popular modern MP titles are infested with cheaters where nearly every fucker plays for himself while chasing the next unlock and instant gratification. Thanks but no thanks.

try to play an MP game
instantly ruined by 12yo hacker
leave MP scene for years
try again
game wants me to take a loan and pay it to unlock OP classes
instantly ruined by 12yo hacker
leave
launch an SP game once in a blue moon
game wants me to spend weeks of full time grinding to unlock a rock to throw at enemies
have to use a trainer to remove all mtx incentivizing mechanics
it still sucks ass
go back to replaying ancient games once in a blue moon
have some fun for a while
wait for a decent game once or twice a decade

Boomer thread
Your 14 year old selves would die for todays games
Spending a better part of adolescence on Genshin Impact, Fortnite, Apex, Lost Ark, Destiny 2 etc.
Trust me, I feel it too, but it's not the games

Part of it is getting old and not having enough time to dedicate to the hobby and a more jaded/"mature" mind but to say it is not the games is untrue. Because replaying games of old where the mechanics are not influenced by player data analytics and shareholder committees is a night and day difference.
I think of it like meat. Once a restaurant that used to give you exactly what you asked for: more meat and less fluff. The new restaurant is giving you stuff that may look like meat, a shinier meat even, but it's mostly fake meat and just fluff because it has a better ROI.
I still enjoy games it just happens that games that appeal to and accommodate me are much rarer these days.

None of these games would have been appealing to my 14yo self because they are grindy weeby shit. You didn't have to spend 1000hrs to unlock the rocket launcher or the plasma rifle in UT or Quake or CS, skins were local mods you could install yourself, for free.. at anytime.
