Nice, I wonder if the other project (History of Khorinis) will ever see the light after all the drama over the years. Either way, fingers crossed for more quality Gothicsauce

If one of these ever DO see the light of day, I just hope they leave the combat the same as the original....

Every PB game since G2 had fans complaining about combat and comparing it to the original(s) and I agree. No click-fest back then.....such a good game.

Always really liked the G1/G2 combat system. I think it gets a bad rap from some because they don't understand the timing mechanic with combining strikes.

It was also really cool that you got faster and longer range animations as your skill increased. Not only did you attack faster, you could visually see nameless get better.

Hated the combat so much when I first played Gothic 2 (the I-st I played later). It was so slow and annoying. Literally made me stop playing after 10 minutes. But the schoolmate back then, who gave me the game, kept insisting it gets better later so few months later I tried it again. And spent the whole evening playing, Laughing Really good touch with the leveling up. Your attacks become faster and the combos - better. Really loved it after gaining some levels and upgrading the skills.
But this is probably bad approach if you want more sells. Most gamers judge the games in their first hour or 2. Especially when you can't refund games after that time in most digital stores. So when the beginning's combat is bad they think the whole game will be like it.

@PredOborG Indeed. People seek instant gratification, you have to be awesome from the start. But then there is no progression. The worst is leveling enemies. The games feel the same from beginning to end.

Its like drinking a good whisky. You need to get accustomed to the taste to enjoy it.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Probably one of the best things was how pathetically weak you were at the start of G2/NOTR and how well earned your near godhood felt towards the end.

People are pretty critical of the zero to hero difficulty curve these days, but I always felt Gothic 1/2 handled it well.

This is the most natural and rewarding way of things happening.

But the facebook derp generation of today can't stand not to have instant LIKES and rewards. For doing absolutely nothing.

I think the other issue is a lot of games don't have a very good curve. Witcher 2 for example was brutally hard at the start (which was good), but you hit godhood by the end of the first chapter if you knew what you were doing.

Zero to hero is good, but you need to make sure the hero part doesn't come too early so it feels well earned.

We're talking about games with 'zero to hero' progression arcs that actually work.

The rest... idc: they will be forgotten, people won't buy / play them etc.

Well, Dark Souls is pretty loved and it's hard so the problem is not really in the difficulty. Or maybe people buy it just for the memes... But yes, it too has 0 progression. Literally you only level up stats. The only difference is with the weapons that do different combos and hits. But the main character is the same at 1st and 700th level, just buffed.

In other news: OpenGothic, an open source remake of the Gothic 2 engine, is shaping up nicely.

https://github.com/Try/OpenGothic

The game is already mostly playable.

Looks nice. But I saw somewhere in a file name "Win32" ?! Does it work on 64 bit or is that something else? Probably another build because it'd be pretty useless not to work on 64. Laughing

Here is a latest video of OpenGothic uploaded on the official channel. Guess it's a solo guy doing it?

Also first time I saw another similar project - ReGoth but as far as I understand it is abandoned? Still has Git download but not sure how playable is that.

Regoth was abandoned by Degenerated (maker of Dx11 renderer), and then by the guy who took over.

OpenGothic is actively being developed. Win32 is jut a reference to the Win32 api, it works on 64 bit systems.

Nice, they got some pretty big names to do the V/O. I'm impressed.

Now hopefully The History of Khorinis will also get a release date soon.

Played 5h, and so far it's FANTASTIC! This could absolutely be an official Gothic spinoff sequel back in the day, since it really feels like Gothic. They got the believable world right, the quests (all of which have multiple ways of being solved!) and writing never feel out of place for a Gothic game. And I just love getting proper instructions how to find a quest npc instead of just following a dot on a minimap.

Also great, professional grade dubbing.

They actually had to stop distributing the mod as a standalone download on their site for now, since they exceeded their allowable bandwidth by 550% in a few hours. It's still available on GOG and Steam.

It's good. Too bad i don't have any audio for voices, because i'm pretty sure i've read its supposed to be voiced, even though its probably not english it's a bit weird to just get text. tried a few different audio outs in the options but it doesnt seem to matter. i downloaded it via steam.

Only polish dubbing is available. It's great.

On Steam it's a separate DLC.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1495950/The_Chronicles_Of_Myrtana_Archolos__Polish_Language_Pack/

I suggest you try it even if like Leo you think it's a gibberish language Laughing I remember playing Drakensang:River of Time with the german dubbing. Everything sounded like an order to pacify a small polish village, but it was better than the english dubbing which had maybe 1/3 of the voice lines.

On GOG just download the Polish version.
Standalone installer is not available ATM. On Discord they promised ModDB soon.

works with my overhaul btw.. maybe there are better ones, haven't really checked out this mod community in like 8 years or whatever.. to make it work 100% (like for Gothic 2) i would have to make edits to the actual world map.. but my mod will still load in certain meshes (like a few pines, bushes, grasses) and many hundreds of hires textures.

it makes the water green though (using the new d3d 11 render) so i'll have to fix that.. might do a special version for this mod.

Took me 80 hours. At no point was I bored with the gameplay.

This is an absolutely amazing mod.

I still can't get over that someone has released what feels like a quality full Gothic game in 2021.

It feels like I've accidentally reached into some alternate universe where PB made a full blown spin off to Gothic 2.

40 hours in and feels like there is still a ton of content left. This mod is huge, and of supreme quality.
