1tb ssd: samsung evo / mx500 / silicon power a55. a55 is 30% cheaper but seems to also have tlc 3d nand and even slc buffer? I already know to avoid qlc... tlc seems to be the "premium" now.
I plan to get 1tb for everything and 120gb for a system drive to replace my plextor with it's archaic 200mbps speeds (it was an ok ssd in 2011!)

I slam in all machines the Samsung EVO 860 series of 500GB... good value for its price if you ask me. In my Thinkpads I put as well a 2nd Samsung MSATA SSD, these are quite impressive if you see that their size are as big as a RAM stick
well the ssd with rgb lighting sure work well, in that they get so hot they stop working:-
dont think its been posted before.
and the guy is proudly saying he has 30 years PC building experience Blame your case and mounting the SSD instead of having wasted 12minutes of my life Such a case and he manages to let his SSD overheat I guess you need to have indeed 30years experience to pull this one off

You didn't even watch it did you? Had nothing to do with where he mounted it, the case, or his experience.
it was 70+ LED's in the badly designed SSD that caused it. He took it out and blew fans directly on it, still same issue.

I am in the process of searching for new mobo, cpu, ram and drives.
If I went intel and z390 route, I can get msi z390 gaming plus motherboard with two m.2 x4 slots. Ive never used m.2 ports so help me understand.
Can I just get one 240gb fast nvme and one 1tb normal m.2 drive amd fill those two m.2 ports? Or will saturation of both ports slow down pcie or something?
Also - any specific system and games drives recommendations? Just samsung evo?

second: for normal usage there is absolutely no difference between nvme or sata (doesnt matter if m2 sata or normal sata) ssds. you wont notice the higher speeds unless you use multiple nvme ssds and always transfer big data between them. and they tend to get very hot, you should know that. and ofc they are still more expensive than standard sata ssds. if you dont need new drives you shouldnt buy m2 ones just to have m2 ssds
and towards your questions, if you populate that board with an nvme ssd in the first m2 slot and sata m2 ssd in the second slot you will lose the sata5 + sata6 ports but nothing else will be affected
Good thanks. So nvme does not make sense but normal 500/500 is still ok. I just ha e this very old 120gb slow plextor ssd for system and hdd 1tb for games. Would be nice to replace both with m.2 ssd drives (not nvme as You say) just to have ssd only system and cleaner setup.
Waiting for ryzen is kinda out of the question. Pc is dead fir 2 days and I am already loosing my mind here . Besides - waiting 3 months will not reward me with any bigger performance in games and I dont care about productivity... From the look of things - 9600k will be as fast or faster than any upcoming ryzen in games. Core count might be important but not soon.

even m2 sata ssds cost more than regular sata ssds, there is no point in investing more money than needed if you have enough space in the case and sata ports
prices are going down since weeks and tbh 350 euros is still pricey, here the cheapest store offer is 309 euros, the normal sata 860 pro only costs ~250 euros
Sinking city winrar unpacking of 17gb isodemo. Results are of unpacking the game on each drive (so packed files were copied to destination and unpacked there)
SSHDD - 10:20 + a lot of noise
Sata SSD - 5:00
Nvme - 3:00 min
Yeah it's nice. Normally I would say nvme is not worth it but with current prices often matching sata? why not.

Pro is for workstation, it is more durable, in other words its made for heavy write / read usage. What goes for SSD´s, it is absolutely overkill for any normal user to buy anything more than lets say newest EVO series, dont get blinded for the numbers on the drive, you are not going to see any difference between normal SSD and NVMe or even thses new PCIe 4.0 drives if you are just gaming and browsing the hump, your PC is not going to be any faster, ofcourse you can unpack your ISO demos faster with higher numbers.
Ive argued with my friend over that almost weekly on how big a difference SSD vs NVME is.
He owns a computer store in Ohio. And he swears up and down NVME is WAY faster than SSD, like a clearly noticeable daily difference.
Maybe for minority of use cases and unique situational users. But overall end consumer user I think will be same/same essentially.
For example I had 2 SSD's in my machine, microcenter near him had NVME's on sale and he sent me one. I put it in, replacing one of my SSD's that had the OS on it, to the NVME.
I can honestly say if you snuck in and changed them without me knowing. I would have NO idea there was a change.
Thought maybe it was just me and my use case, but same results when I put a NVME in my sons upgrading from a evo 850.
Sure on paper maybe on a degree of a second or so on bootup time, or photoshop taking 5.7 vs 6.3 seconds to open.
But day to day. No noticeable difference at all. Both are waaay fast enough that I don't 'notice' lag doing anything (that period of time that makes you consciously think "this is sluggish").
Like windows reboots so fast POST takes longer than windows to get to desktop. I can reboot and get back in before discord or teamspeak realizes I timed out, people just notice I went quiet for about 15 seconds. (On both the old SSD and the new NVME)

I was skeptical but nvme corsair mp510 unpacks the same files in 3 minutes while sata ssd in 5 and hdd in 10.

Did not tested it. Only copied vampyr packed to each drive and unpacked with a timer and nothing running in the background. And that's on 3700x, so no throttling there.
Right now I only have Corsair mp510 480gb and I am keeping it for system drive etc. I am getting the same model but 960gb next week, so I can do some test between these 2

if their laptops don't have SSD, and the laptops can accommodate the SSD - then yes definately
currently any SSD is far better than HDD, and there are no bad choices as far as defects
in the news:
Toshiba CM6: Server SSDs with PCIe 4.0, 6,400 MB/s and up to 30 TB
Quote:
Toshiba announced its first enterprise SSD based on PCIe 4.0. The Toshiba CM6 offers up to 30 TB of storage space in a 2.5-inch form factor and achieves more than 6.4 GB/s via PCIe 4.0 x4, the manufacturer promises.
At the announcement, Toshiba Memory confidently speaks of the " fastest PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD for enterprise applications " in the industry. The editors have not yet come across any other enterprise SSD with PCIe 4.0, which makes the statement seem credible, at least in the short term. The CM6 with 800 GB to 30 TB is to be available in the 2.5-inch housing with U.2 connection. If the host system also provides PCIe 4.0, it should reach more than 6,400 MB/s in sequential read.
Such speeds have so far reached only enterprise SSDs with significantly more PCIe lines. PCIe 4.0 allows twice the throughput per lane compared to PCIe 3.0, so PCIe 4.0 x4 works just as fast as PCIe 3.0 x8. The CM6 should also support NVMe 1.4 (PDF), a new version of the software interface for PCIe SSDs.
