Its been a hot topic in Scandinavia lately
Rare media topics where kids/young adults almost died and was hospitalized because they drank like 4-5 liters of Red bull, monster, etc. And people keep thinking its worse than alcohol Laughing Should we ban coffee too? But yeah, I get that is probably easier for kids to drink a half liter of energy drink rather than coffee, but still... its retarded.

First of all, these rare cases with the kids in media most likely already have a heart problem, so pretty sure"high performance sports" are just as dangerous (or worse)for young people who might have a heart condition.

And to drink that many energy drinks when you are a 45kg 14 year old girl probably isn't a great idea. (from Sweden half year ago)

Anyways, 3/4 here in Norway wants a age limit. A few countries already have it, Latvia and Lithuania and more to come. Countries I think have bigger problems than high energy drink consumption for kids.

I dont like these kind of bans because I think people/parents should decide for themselves.

That said, I would prefer the kids didnt drink that crap.

Engergy drinks are like 80% advertisement, 10% suger and 10% caffeeine with some added colorants and chemicals for taste anyway.

Some kids drink Red Bull before school and it takes away the little attention they had and makes them even more hyperactive.

But Education > Bans.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Almost every time I go to a super market I see kids/youth buying nothing but energy drinks and quite often a lot of it at that.

As always it's a case of overdoing something and energy drinks in particular isn't a good thing to overdo, esp. not for kids/youth. I'd rather regulate the amount of crap in those drinks than ban them though.

They already have an age restriction over here, what was it 16? Though I did see some stores with an 18 sign for it. Not even sure if its store policy or governement issued.

When I was 16/17 I had a period where I drank 3 a day or so, you can easily say I overdid it. These days I rarely drink it. F1 in a country that makes the viewing time during the night I'll sometimes get a Red Bull... but the past years I more and more go: I'll just make some coffee.

I'm not for banning. See how much shit banning drugs causes... and how the alcohol ban worked out.
If people want to fuck up their life or just have a bit of fun without hurting others they should be able to. Best we can do as a society is warn them of the dangers and provide better mental care.

i used to drink this crap as a student, a young mind totaly falling for the cool factor and their marketing when in fact it shocks ur body with sugar n cafeine and god knows what other crap

i havent drank them for 12 years now, and im much better and getting much better sleep then when i was drinking them

and dont underestimate stupid parents, my mother bought them for me to 'study' better, same reason she bought me study pills, aderol or whatever (this was 20 years ago, and the moment i figured out she was a total sheep bilieving anything the tv says) , i never took em, it made me disgusted with her and this whole industry.

marketing can be very damaging and brainwashing, just look at smokers , this filth should not be in shops, period.

Its not by law in Sweden yet either, so grocery stores themselves decide. From 13-16 mostly.

I had to laugh out loud when I saw some teenagers drinking a energy drink in front of a supermarket and one of them said "take your time, you have to enjoy it"

My friends sons heart stopped last week due to energy drink. However, its not that he drank insane amounts - but he is a sportsman and apparently its not really good to drink energy drinks daily in that case.

shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.

When i was a teenager we bought a box of Ginseng and Gurana tablets that had much higher dose than any of those energy drinks. i ate 25 of them and went to an all night movie marathon. The next day my eyes were bulging out of my head like a goldfish, had to go to school for 2 weeks with crazy googlie eyes..

The only danger is the insane amount of suger.

for adults the "problem" isnt the caffeine. its either the massive amount of sugar or the combination of the replacements of it in the sugarfree variants (just google about the effects of "light" sodas with aspartam and whatever to replace the sugar)

but when it comes to kids the caffeine is a big problem. give a 14 year old a can and that brat would be more annoying than its usual Very Happy

here in my region most of the stores dont sell it to teenagers below 16, but its not a law

@breezer_: isnt it even forbidden to advertise them in finland? i kinda remember some ufc game from ea was banned from one nordish country due to the fact of the monster ads at the ground of the cage

at work a used to drink much (a 0,5l can per day) of that stuff for a long time cause it was easier than always getting coffee but i had massive problems with my sleeping routine after a while. not that i could not sleep, but it was bad sleep with constant wake ups due to strange dreams etc. since im back to only coffee (still in a large dimension) im fine again

well coffee doesnt usually put me into afib but energy drinks generally do, still they all taste like cat pee anyway Laughing

i suspect it might be the taurine or some other addictives that cause the problem.

Think the age limit is 15 or something but it's not very well enforced although some stores do check for identification though not as much as when it comes to cigarettes and such.

I do believe the consumption has gone up and there are quite a few kids drinking these beverages of all sorts from Redbull to other brands to various health and exercise oriented drinks which seeing the above post yeah Taurine is a common ingredient in many of these.

Same with soda and most of the rest of the consumable products though it's not consumption but over consumption that is the problem, parenting might help but when a group of schoolkids buy these things by the bulk in local shops then maybe the local regulations for how this product is handled here in Sweden needs to be overlooked a bit if there are issues with mass consumption although I don't know, guessing the amount you'd have to drink daily is quite high unless there are other factors.

EDIT: Also not too sure what your average kid does these days, I see hanging around outside the pizzeria is still popular when it's not buying beverages in the store but I have no idea how actively outdoors they are or things like that, think overweight issues have also gone up and of course fiddling with the phone and such or computers or console usage but can't really say for certain.

Certainly noticed my own health gradually declining and started working on that last year which made quite a difference but can't really say for others and especially the younger generation. Very Happy

Two three walks a day and after a month there was already some pretty noticeable results, reducing sugar intake made a nice improvement too with how much of it is used in certain products ha ha. But I'm not really a health or training guru or anything just yet though I have a lot more energy and overall I'm feeling far better than I used to at this point.

Course that doesn't quite just connect to energy drinks and all that stuff just like that.

They taste like shit, why do people gulp them down?

I only like carbonated beverages like Coke. Preferrably with some Haig in it Laughing

Well, Norway is a shithole where stuff like this is concerned. "Ohh, it can potentially be harmful for your health, so it should be illegal" is the normal mentality here. Too much is already illegal already because of it. Weak medicine, overtaxed nicotine, insane policies around driving etcetcetcetcetc.
