Is LTSC really the Windows XP of Windows 10 ? I mean Windows XP (RTM, not SP2) wasn't bloated at all, and it was easy to even spot weird processes in the task manager.

By then, hoping they have a good version of Windows or just extend the expiration
Aww Yeah Ha! Good luck.. you will conform or die BUT, as the d00ds mentioned.. get LTSC if you are concerned.

it's like windows 7 with some windows 10 additions but without all the bloatware.
you still need to remove some stuff, like skydrive and windows defender + disable some services but after that you are good to go to enjoy windows 10 like everyone should.
the best thing is, no useless upgrades every 6 months, which will give you mostly nothing new except some app updates and so on.
your ltsb system can run fine for 2-4 years until the next ltsb version is out and if you decide you don't want the new ltsb version then just keep the current running. the current 1607 version is supported until 2026. Laughing

you can install 1607 ltsb now or wait 2 more months for the newest ltsc version.

So I just mounted a new SSD and wanted to install Win10 Enterprise. I mounted the ISO under Windows 7 but it won't let me install to the SSD - instead it wants to update my Win7 installation on the HDD
For clean install I have to create a bootable device???? Is there no other way? Haven't used my DVD burner in years and my USB stick has some loose contacts.

edit: ok I borrowed another USB stick, used Rufus to make it bootable and installed from there

Since an OEM key costs €6-7 I'd say go for it. Also the tale that you can't reactivate is nonsense. I reinstalled Windows 10 at work on a new PC, used their phone support to reactivate and voila, it worked.

I must say that Windows 10 can be extremely infuriating to work with though. There's a LOT of crap that takes ages to figure out. For example, our 5 year old NAS refused to get detected by Windows 10. Turns out it's caused by something called SMB1 not being enabled because Microsoft decided to remove default support. It meant that over 3/4 of all our work stations, printers, etc. would NOT get detected on the network. Fuck you, Microsoft. Took me ages to discover why this was, as well.

And don't get me started on permission errors or their new Control Panel which is a joke. It seems all the new menus lack the options of old, are harder to work with and slower to navigate. Good thing they still left in the old stuff but how long before they "phase it out" and just remove it all together?

I also had this issue with a customers NAS i was testing.

This also means that it's an ancient nas it's probably time to upgrade if the nas matters at all to you.

I agree it's shitty that MS can't make it so that atleast you get a warning message that "Windows 10 has discovered an unsupported SMB1 device" or something. I understand the frustration.

Yeah, like life, its all about "incrementalism".. slowly removing OR adding stuff from/to us hoping we won't really mind. Sad

I do use Disk Cleanup a fair bit as it allows me to clean crap I'd otherwise have to prod for each time. Somewhat convenient. Guess I should keep the EXE and support files around before the next big patch.

From what I understand, MS is replacing traditional tools with ones based on UWP. Not removing.

Of course, for people like me who're used to using the traditional ones, it's a hassle.

As if the average joe would read those updates. And yeah, the fact that Windows doesn't even warn users - they could have enabled SMB1 but added a warning. They didn't. And searching for "my PC doesn't show up under Network" gives you a gazillion topics about network sharing being wrongly configured but it took me three hours of Googling to find the solution so it's really not that obvious.

And the NAS is 6 years old which isn't all that old - it's a Synology so not just a cheap brand either.

I've always defended Windows 8 because its bad features were mostly fixed in 8.1 and it actually added quite a few good things. Windows 10 however, has added very little good new stuff but has made a lot of things far harder to find. You got to manually type in the names to find the old stuff since you can't navigate to it anymore from the menus. That's ridiculous. The Devices menu is a nightmare to use now - lacks half the options the old one had.

So, when it comes to LTSC, obviously I can't use my legal Win10 Pro Key. What's the alternatives? I know very little about running pirated Windows. KMS Pico or something?

find a kms key with google or buy yourself one and activate it with phone activation.
even if the key gets deactivated in the future, which is most likely with public kms keys you will find on google, it will be still activated until you format your pc the next time.
but they are hard to find and deactivated pretty fast, so if you want to do this -> be fast with activating it with phone activation, before the key is unusable.

of course the easiest way is to get a kms tool from a official source (most likely MDL)
i already used kmspico, it just worked so i never had the need to took something else.
but there are also others like microsoft tool kit and so on.

you install it, press activate and your done.
after that you can either uninstall it again and install it again after 180 days to reactivate, or you let it installed in the first place and it will automaticly redo the activation at every boot in the background. you will not notice it.

I do the same asme friewald. All the PCs in my house are using KMSpico. But only get the version from MDL, there is 1000's of fake ones out there.
So far I have had 0 issues with it.
