does netflix have any way of figuring out the value of the things the produce given you just pay a flat fee to watch a thing? do they bother figuring out if the content essentially 'paid for itself'?
or do they just set aside x-amount of millions to make 'content', and then check imdb ratings to see if people want to see more of it next time they start parceling out funds for new content, and they dont really care if the content brought in (or kept) enough value to justify its own creation... if you understand what im asking.
with movies its easy, you just look at the box office takings to see if you make a sequel.. with netflix, its clearly a different deal.

The way they are pumping out content, I think they look at as: New content for the platform, increasing overall products on offer. If it doesn't cost too much they'll throw money at it.
That being said, I'm sure they also look into how many people watched it. So anything that isn't outright bad that you turn it off is a win in those metrics.

yeah but bright was apparently 90m? someone, somewhere has to justify that, and figure out IF they do a sequel, how much to invest in it. kinda curious how they make those decisions based purely on viewing numbers.. i mean just because someone watches it, doesnt mean its necessarily a worthwhile expense compared to instead making another 3 or 4 new shows. People might have watched it because it was there, and not felt it was a worthwhile reason to continue their subscription. I mean, im signed up to netflix (i got 12 month free from my isp), and i watched the full movie, but i sure as hell dont think content like bright is worth continuing to pay a subscription for (even IF i wasnt a dirty, dirty pirate!)

Bright - 5,9/10
What a shame. I really really wanted this to be great, the urban gritty Shadowrun-ish setting is such an unexplored land full of opportunities, yet the movie decided to ruin the very promising set-up and SmithEdgerton bromance by taking another direction entirely, focused on cringe instead, which made me lose interest in what the (paper-thin   ) story had to offer.
The score would have been higher if the second half had not contained ridiculous action, cheesy lines, you touch my wand, overdramatization, you touch my tralala, awkward scenes and unintentionally comical tenso stares. I'd like to see more of this but...not like this. Whackedwalrus!

Bright 7/10 I did like the whole orc, elf human living together (xigia's calling it a shadowrun-ish setting is spot on) and it was entertaining to watch.
But also something to just as easy forget.
Justice league 6/10 It was ok, nothing special.

1 and 2 are still amazing. |

Whole thing was a mess. It was a chase movie with no purpose. Everything only happened to necessitate maintaining the chase, rather than the chase being necessitated by the story.
Literarily nothing interesting happens, no matter how hard the movie threatened to actually go somewhere. They shouldn't have called it bright, they should have called it macguffin: the mediocre chase.
Interesting fact, bright is called blight in China.

Die hard 2 is one of those films I think gets treated really unfairly... It's historically been dismissed and underrated for no good reason. The character of McClane remains true, the comedy/light heartedness is spot on, the scenario is suitably outlandish and gives perfect scope for lots of worthwhile fun action set pieces... The villain isn't bad (granted, the least memorable of the trilogy), and it's solidly violent and worthy as a 90s action film (before Hollywood forgot how to make solid fun action films for adults)
I really like the film, and honestly given its tone, I'm generally more in the mood for watching die hard 2 over the original (not saying it's better, I just find it to be a more laid back action film that's easier to be in the mood for, compared to the more thriller style of the original), and consider the entire original die hard trilogy to be one of the best and most consistently awesome all-the-way-through "true trilogies" (my other favs being alien and lethal weapon)

Bright - 8/10 - I thought it was great, I liked the interaction between the two characters. They now have an excellent basis to work with, hopefully people will like it and Netflix will spend serious moniez to work it out.

With a better story and writing this could have been a really (and I mean really) good flick, as it stands now it's just above mediocre (and that basically thanks to the setting).
I still gave it a thumbs up on Netflix but that because I want to see more of this type of setting (unfortunately they won't get that) and maybe the sequel will be better. |

more asia-town adventures... two movies im revisiting as i havent seen them in ages.
first up, ill get the most contentious one out of the way..
the man from nowhere. people love this movie, say its absolutely amazing, and the first time i watched it i remember really liking it... but if im honest, theres something about the pacing and maybe the logic that im not super happy about. Things seem to happen a bit unnaturally and quickly, things fall into place too easily, and sometimes im left wondering how our hero manages to figure out where he needs to go... like he just instinctively knows where certain characters hang out, or how to get in contact with them.. and for the life of me, i still cant figure out how he knew where the van the kid got into towards the end, would be. Either the film just glosses over things and shrugs, saying 'who cares', or it moves too quickly that it doesnt give these sequences a feel of natural, logical progression. So yeah, not quite as enjoyable as it was back when i was younger and didnt really care about that kind of shit. It bugs me now, though. The real shining aspect of the film though, is our hero and the little girl.. they work together really well and i think its the acting that makes the film. That, and the action sequences. So yeah, a good film - but to me? not a great film, sorry to say.
shadowless sword. I remember loving this film, but now? I have to admit its got a big problem. The positives are that i enjoyed the story/concept.. i was never bored, we move from location to location and theres always something enjoyable going on, from just simple dialog, to a flashback or some action. Its helped along by two (in my opinion) likeable core actors, portraying interesting characters. The thing that stops me loving it is that, i have to admit, an action film like this REALLY needs some great fight sequences. Having seen so many really decent fight scenes in movies, i have to say the fights in this are a big letdown. Its all close-up, quick cuts and bad wirework making it a bit dull and unsatisfying to watch. Also, the addition of bullshit magic flying really ruined it for me. I dont mind when these films accentuate ability to emphasize the mystical levels of skill these characters have, by allowing them to jump really high, or even 'glide' down to the ground. but when you have characters that just flat out spread their fucking arms and just fly away, or you have villainous characters that out of nowhere 'land' into the scene, when theres nothing for them to have jumped down from.. yeah its unfortunate, and i feel it didnt need to be there. It just spoils the film.

Ak-Nyeo \ The Villainess (2017)

La Femme Nikita Korean style. It was a pretty good action flick,however certain story twists were badly written. If it wasn't for them I would give it 8/10.

blade runner 2049 - 8,5/10
the movie was too long for my taste and a little bit too slow sometimes but i guess it was good afterall for the atmosphere.
atleast at home i could pause it and take a shit or smoke a cigarette. would have gone crazy in the cinema.
still for me it was one, if not THE best movie of 2017.
this is how blade runner should be like and not like this boring 80's crap.

It was great, but I expected a bit more interesting story. The atmosphere, soundtrack, acting and visuals were all top notch. One of the best sequels I've ever seen if not the best.

Bright (2017) - 7.5/10
I may be in the minority here, but I really liked it. It's basically Shadowrun set in modern Los Angeles. All the races are there (even mention of dwaves), and all are represented fairly faithfully. Hell, there's even a split second cut of the city-scape at night with a dragon flying overhead, yet nobody bats an eye. The banter between Smith and his partner was great too. They meshed well.
Which begs the question - why aren't Microsoft and Topps suing the pants off the filmmakers? They basically took their IP and made a movie out of it - all that's missing is the future setting (cyberpunk).

Because you can't copyright a world with orcs, humans and/or elves in it? The whole point of blights story is that it's generic. It commits to nothing, and is just a vague story that uses well known fantasy elements such as fantasy races, evil lords and magic. Any lawsuit would fail so hard. Because there's nothing unique in it that anyone could lay claim to as an original concept or idea.

Blade Runner 2049 8.5/10
Liked it a lot, and it didn't really feel too long (although some parts could have obviously been shorter, it didn't drag).
I was pleasantly surprised that it's an actual sequel and not an entirely new story in the same universe.
Shame Wallace was not in it more, he's clearly one of the most interesting characters. His movements and way of talking were done really well by Jared Leto, very eerie and you're never sure if he's still human, half-human or full machine.
One thing that started to annoy me as the movie progressed was some of the BWAAAAAP-'city' sound effects. It worked once or twice, but it was overused and were always the same effects. It felt a bit forced as a reference to the original.
The twist in the end was great as well.
