My game room slash man cave is coming along nicely and I'm just waiting for a few wall decals to call it mostly done but the main element missing for now, is the lack of proper mood lighting. For the ceiling I'll get a proper regular light since the room will also be used for playing board games, assembling stuff and so on but during evenings I prefer to leave it off and to rely on mood lighting to bring light to the room.

Right now, I've bought LED strips which I've attached to the edge of my desk and which connect to my PC through USB. This works really well but doesn't give off much light to the room itself so I need some ideas for actually brightening up the room.

I'm using a Philips Livingcolours for now but it takes up a lot of desk space and is aimed in one direction which is not ideal for me.

 Spoiler:

Anyone have any cool ideas?

Tssk tssk you noob. Arcades always had the best mood lighting - nothing to do with woman lighting Wink.

looks stupid and pays a disservice to anyone who actually bothered to used well designed colors in their games. I'd rather use neutral lighting if at all and a calibrated screen. Embarassed Razz

It really depends on how much money you are able to spend. Maybe you care to share a pic of the current setup?

@Nui: Screens glow themselves, it's not like paper being lit by an external source I'd say? Smile

They do of course, but the more your eyes adapt to the bias lighting the more your color perception drifts off.

In production quality colour settings people use a neutral border around their monitor and neutral color lighting.

Though obviously you don't need to care about that Razz

I thought the Phillips range had those for the roof (and wall) as well?
Might want to install 4 of those together with the regular lighting but have 2 controllers.

Then again, giving any advice without knowing the composition of the room is futile anyway.

I'll take some pictures tonight.

But yeah: mood lighting does zero to affect what's on your screen since it's backlit. I don't want to use regular light because it's distracting and too cold. I want something warmer that lets me see in the "dark". Proper lighting makes a huge amount of difference in how a room feels.

I'm a graphic designer (and actually head of color management) and that border is mainly to stop sunlight. Our eyes adjust to the dominant colour anyway - if your monitor is set too yellow, your eyes will stop seeing it after a little while. On the other hand, it's important for your eyes that the wall behind your screen is not dark nor bright. That's where mood lighting (or soft light) comes in. Orange and reds (and even greens) work best (3000K and less) while blues and whites (6500K+) are considered "bright" and distracting.

I don't mean those screens.

This shows what I mean

Ooh yeah - the difference with that is very very marginal though. When viewing colour proofs (or anything printed actually), you do need a light box which uses a similar idea but for monitors, your eyes tend to ignore what's around your screen.

The graphics industry is full of extremely expensive "solutions" to barely existing problems - it's mainly a mental placebo sold to the same suckers that still believe Apple computers are the only choice for graphic design. I've seen too many printing companies that employed such idiots that spent thousands on unneeded color management tools and tech only for their printing press to be completely ignored and uncalibrated. *facepalms*

Laughing I'm starting to believe that many industries are full of shit, with things rarely tested against actual data showing their relevance.

A neutral color background is not part of the excessively expensive though, is it? Razz

I'd love to hear more about that topic actually, but I've hijacked your thread enough. Besides you get my idea, understand it (clearly better then I do), so thats done anyway Very Happy

On topic: I like indirect lighting.
Good luck and have fun.

I didn't bother taking it with a tripod so they're a little blurry.

Well it depends Wink it does mean your entire staff has to be facing walls.

At my last job, I actually had one dolt fresh out of school who rigged this weird tube of cloth which he'd pull over his head and then the other end over his monitor. Apparently his professor at college had told his class that this was a very cheap but effective way to properly see all colours. The dolt couldn't even type blind.

Room dividers shouldn't be to expensive, but I see your point.

So you basically had a freaky lampshade cosplayer in your office? Laughing

I'm thinking of getting some of those Philips RGB Hues too.
Though on the other hand i keep reading they are not really longliving, and of course the price.

But you can also get some cheap copies by Xiaomi on something like Gearbest.com

Currently using some cheapish RGB LED-Stripes behind my desk too:

Still have some leftovers Stripes that i plan on putting behind my display.

You chose a great position for the desk directly under the roof window. Very Happy

That looks pretty good. LED strips are useful but only if you can hide them from direct view - otherwise I find them too bright and because they're not evenly lit, they're not that attractive. Ideally, I'd like little disks you can stick to surfaces that runs on batteries or easy-to-hide power leads. The LED strips have a long thin cable attached it which is ideal but I haven't found little LED spot lights that do the same.

And that roof window: it actually has a fully closeable curtain Wink so I can darken the room completely even during day time. I opened the windows so the pictures wouldn't be even blurrier.

deosnt get hot, not even really warm, its led stuff. but you have to place it on a solid surface. if your desk moves a bit it might loose contact and elements go dark or flicker (the power is transmitted via the bricks itself, or lets say its metallic frame around; and no you wont get an eletric shock if you touch it while turned on). have placed it on the side of my huge desk, its really nice in the darker times of the years (actually within the summer now i havent switched it on)

the only bad thing is: the powerswitch is on the back of the blue "power" brick. so to use it properly you might want to connect it to a poweroutlet with a remote so that you dont always have to touch the bricks.

I'm planning on fastening the blocks in some way or another that isn't permanent. I imagine sticky putty (the kind used to sticking posters to walls) should work fine.

It's really a lot harder to get game-related items than expected when you consider how huge the market is. You find lots of Mario & Zelda stuff and also other mainstream crap like Halo but actual proper decent looking decorations are very hard to find unless you stick with figurines.

should work fine, you should even be able to combine multiple lamps (with one power source only!). but dont know how much bricks work fine together (and too lazy to do the math Razz )

As they are probably just LEDs, it won't get hot at all. Very Happy
