|
 |
My game room slash man cave is coming along nicely and I'm just waiting for a few wall decals to call it mostly done but the main element missing for now, is the lack of proper mood lighting. For the ceiling I'll get a proper regular light since the room will also be used for playing board games, assembling stuff and so on but during evenings I prefer to leave it off and to rely on mood lighting to bring light to the room.
Right now, I've bought LED strips which I've attached to the edge of my desk and which connect to my PC through USB. This works really well but doesn't give off much light to the room itself so I need some ideas for actually brightening up the room.
I'm using a Philips Livingcolours for now but it takes up a lot of desk space and is aimed in one direction which is not ideal for me.

Anyone have any cool ideas?

It really depends on how much money you are able to spend. Maybe you care to share a pic of the current setup?
@Nui: Screens glow themselves, it's not like paper being lit by an external source I'd say?

I thought the Phillips range had those for the roof (and wall) as well?
Might want to install 4 of those together with the regular lighting but have 2 controllers.
Then again, giving any advice without knowing the composition of the room is futile anyway.

I'll take some pictures tonight.
But yeah: mood lighting does zero to affect what's on your screen since it's backlit. I don't want to use regular light because it's distracting and too cold. I want something warmer that lets me see in the "dark". Proper lighting makes a huge amount of difference in how a room feels.

I don't mean those screens.
This shows what I mean

Ooh yeah - the difference with that is very very marginal though. When viewing colour proofs (or anything printed actually), you do need a light box which uses a similar idea but for monitors, your eyes tend to ignore what's around your screen.
The graphics industry is full of extremely expensive "solutions" to barely existing problems - it's mainly a mental placebo sold to the same suckers that still believe Apple computers are the only choice for graphic design. I've seen too many printing companies that employed such idiots that spent thousands on unneeded color management tools and tech only for their printing press to be completely ignored and uncalibrated. *facepalms*

Remember to stand up once in a while or clogging blood may go to your dick and you'll have a permanent boner. Yes, I am a doctor and this is sound medical advice!

As promised, here are the pics:

I didn't bother taking it with a tripod so they're a little blurry.

That Tetris lamp looks great, can you tell me how hot it gets? In other words is it safe? Thanks

deosnt get hot, not even really warm, its led stuff. but you have to place it on a solid surface. if your desk moves a bit it might loose contact and elements go dark or flicker (the power is transmitted via the bricks itself, or lets say its metallic frame around; and no you wont get an eletric shock if you touch it while turned on). have placed it on the side of my huge desk, its really nice in the darker times of the years (actually within the summer now i havent switched it on)
the only bad thing is: the powerswitch is on the back of the blue "power" brick. so to use it properly you might want to connect it to a poweroutlet with a remote so that you dont always have to touch the bricks.

I'm planning on fastening the blocks in some way or another that isn't permanent. I imagine sticky putty (the kind used to sticking posters to walls) should work fine.
It's really a lot harder to get game-related items than expected when you consider how huge the market is. You find lots of Mario & Zelda stuff and also other mainstream crap like Halo but actual proper decent looking decorations are very hard to find unless you stick with figurines.

Have a look at Etsy if you want some unique stuff and aren't too worried about it being official merch.
