Just bought this on the summer sale, what a great game. Scratches my current metroidvania itch just right.

This sounds like a much needed "upgrade"
"Dream Gate - Discover a whole new method of traversing Hallownest! Slice through the Veil and travel in an instant from one corner of the kingdom to another."

It's fun exploring all the places but lategame it became such a chore to rush through areas you've seen 30 times already Neutral

Yeah at least most of the main areas have a stag station but even so there's some areas that you'll have to trek through a number of times, more if you're going for the various secrets or what to call them. (Hidden charms and the whole dream nail thing including optional bosses.)

Thinking of buying this, can someone rank the difficulty on a scale between Ori (hard at times, but fair and satisfying) and Valdis Story: Abyssal City (frustrating piece of shit)? Also, is there any kind of coherent story or is it mostly about looking for bits of lore scattered around the world?

why don't you try the "demo" and if youre satisfied = buy.

Its a bit like dark souls. checkpoints are rare, bosses are difficult. There is a map though.

The routes to bosses are too long and annoying in this Embarassed Dark Souls, Salt & Sanctuary all did it better than this.

+1 and platforming gets ridiculous in this game

1) Lenovo Legion 7 (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3080 16Gb, 32Gb DDR4, SSD 1TB +2TB

2) SFFPC (streaming via Moonlight+ Sunshine)

There are only a couple of bosses that have longish roads. Most of the time you can unlock some sort of shortcut to a bench. The July update is going to introduce some other form of fast travel.

Platforming is really mild - nothing too difficult, except for the White Palace which is optional and by the time you might decide to do it you can have enough upgrades to make it pretty comfortable.

I was stuck at Teleporting Wanker and Shit Collector bosses when I wrote that, those had the most annoying ways, so far

Oh you'll love the arena.
 Spoiler:

Once you get a few more notches for your charms things get a bit better as you can build your character in more flexible ways and there's other upgrades too but expect to have to work for some of these.

TBH I'll be glad if I manage to just finish the game. Don't think I have the patience for optional arenas. I got some Nail master skill or whatever, but seems useless since bosses barely leave me time to heal myself, let alone charge up attacks.

@Sauronich This game is more frustrating than Ori imo. Haven't played Valdis Story

Yeah you can get a few of those by visiting the masters, you can also upgrade the nail itself eventually but they make you travel through some pretty far off remote areas even with the stag station and railway transport methods.

It is a metroidvania like game so backtracking is quite a big thing but it does get somewhat tedious after a while as you will be running back and forth quite a lot and even after you've gotten the stag stations unlocked there's still some areas that are a bit more remote and not easily reachable. (The very depths of the place for one example.)

Platforming is mostly kept at a manageable level but some few areas turn it up a bit even if you're not going for secrets.

They do keep most of the environments pretty unique though with their own distinct look and set of enemies the further you get the tougher the enemies become both in terms of toughness and also their movement pattern, ranged attacks are also a pain so yeah the scenery is nice and all but everything is trying to kill you. Very Happy

Even the merchants and not-immediately-hostile NPC's you meet are assholes, individual purchases of each of the mapping supplies for example plus the base map itself for each new area. (Tracking down that guy again and again.)

This is the immediate big one! Hidden Dreams will now go out to all players on August 3rd. In classic Team Cherry style, this is a little later than we said, but we felt the update needed a little more testing and fine tuning before we send it out. Plus, we may have managed to squeeze a few little unannounced surprises in there!

http://teamcherry.com.au/hidden-dreams-update-mods-summer-games-done-quick-mods/

I'm near the end of the game now and doing optional stuff, damn this game is good and the frustrating parts before became much less frustrating after going other way to find upgrades and new charms.
Passed the first two challenges at the Colosseum too to get Nail upgrade but yet to try the 3rd one, or go to the White Palace that everyone is talking about Very Happy

Nice! I've been managing to resist till now since I wanted to go for the properly polished Hollow ride, but...I'm not sure my inner patient bear will resist some more. The desire to play is too strong Very Happy

Well the DLC looks like it's just 2 new bosses, that you can defeat multiple times, each time they get harder. And a new stag station.
Not really essential stuff, but nice little addition. Really little, but it's free so ...

Huge update today and we’re leading with the biggest news of all: Hollow Knight’s second Free Content Pack, The Grimm Troupe!

This Halloween, Grimm and his Troupe arrive, free for all players. What’s packed in for this chilling expansion? Let’s jump into the details:
  • New Major Quest – Light the Nightmare Lantern and summon the Grimm Troupe to Hallownest, if you dare! Take part in a twisted ritual that stretches the breadth of the kingdom and bestows the player with a powerful new ally.
  • New Boss Fights – What epic quest is complete without epic show-downs? Get ready to face off against a dark new foe and a twisted scarlet spectre. Who are they? What brings them to Hallownest? We won’t spoil the surprise!
  • 4 New Charms – We’re going all out with the quest, but that’s not enough! Your charm range is also expanding, granting unique new aids and abilities. You’ll have to discover their powers for yourself, but their appearance may give a few hints.
  • New Enemies – The arrival of the Troupe doesn’t just mean enormous boss encounters, it also brings new smaller (but challenging!) foes to test your nail and spells against. Your Hunter’s Journal is going to be overflowing by the time your done!
  • New Friends – Grimm’s clan may appear scary but they aren’t all bad. Get ready to befriend a new bunch of weirdos, including one who offers a very special service for players flush with Geo!
  • New Music – Tying this whole cavalcade together are all new spooky and spine tingling tracks by Christopher Larkin. Get ready to feel the fear!
  • Map Markers – In a world as big as Hallownest finding your way is the greatest challenge of all, and you’ll now have an extra tool in your cartographic journeys with custom Map Markers! Place them anywhere on your maps to remember everything.

Hollow Knight's next free expansion, Grimm Troupe, will finally launch on PC on October 26th, developer Team Cherry has announced.

Grimm Troupe is the second free content expansion released for Team Cherry's beautiful, insect-themed Metroidvania game, following Hidden Dreams earlier this year. It's a spooky Halloween-themed affair framed around a twisted ritual to light the mysterious Nightmare Lantern and summon the titular Grimm Troupe.

Grimm Troupe will introduce a new major quest line, new bossfights, new friendly NPCs and enemies, new charms, and new music. It also brings a bit of a quality-of-life addition in the form of custom Map Markers.

I actually almost completely avoided this game until now. Got the Humble Monthly for 7.10€ because of some promo coupon, so I ended up with this pretty cheap.

What an absolutely fantastic game. It's charming, mysterious, even oppressive at times, very Souls-like, not in gameplay, but in world-building, characters, lore delivery. It's also very impressive how much it does with such a simplistic combat system, fights feel great, great boss design too.

This also is a perfect game to play on the Intel Graphics while I wait for my GPU, heh.
