Any recommendations? Preferably 2D but i could probably look into 3D game engines too.
I'm currently using RPG Maker MV (still evaluating..). I think i'd prefer something less jRPG'ish, even though it should be possible to make just about anything with RMMV (but probably a bit of a hassle to change the entire combat system etc). I'm not a programmer.
It should have a good, active community so you can get help easily (RPG maker is good here, so far).

So what type of rpg do you want to make? The genre is huge. I guess you have to be more specific with what you want to realize?

What I usually see with RPG maker is that most of the time you put more effort into hacks/work arounds to get passed the restrictions of the engine and some are so embedded you need to be creative to make it somewhat work. No surprise since its made to be very noob friendly.
Read quite a few articles on creating graphics, the combat mechanics and choice of the different RPG maker clients a few months ago when I was thinking about picking it up as a hobby (not really making a game, just messing around).
Saw a lot of the more serious ones talking about going with a different engine instead. Most were putting Unity forward. It all boiled down to: the start is going to be tougher but you will be better off since you are less constraint and you'll learn more.
In the end I just went: "Eh, I'm too lazy for all that"
