How Dishonored 2 hides its best details in the periphery
Quote:
Dishonored 2 begins by throwing you in a locked office against your will, trapped and unarmed. An open window across the room teases the possibility of escape, so - once you're done rifling through the room, reading discarded notes and idly spinning a globe - you climb onto the ledge outside. There, you are teased with a vista of smokestacks and gothic spires. You can taste freedom, but a huge pipe blocks your path. You head back inside, and it's only then that you realise there's another window, closed, just across the room. Open it up and slip outside, and that promise of freedom is fulfilled.

"Most [players] struggle for a while," says level design director Christophe Carrier. "When they find that these windows can be opened, they often react like 'Of course, how didn't I think of it before? For them, it became some kind of unconscious guideline for the entire game that is: 'I should try things that I assumed were not possible'."

The resulting freedom can be discombobulating; today, players are hardwired to seek out alternate routes solely for collectibles, rather than to move through a level in an unexpected way. Dishonored 2's trick is no more than a modern variant on old school side-scrolling platformers would reward you for moving left along the screen at the beginning of a level before venturing right.

[...]

Arkane understands the importance of the little details: when you throw one of those sticky grenades, it makes a 'cling' as it leaves your hand - at that exact moment, its spikes fold out of its body before it embeds into a surface; limbs hit by a sleep dart will get numbed first before an NPC falls unconscious and if you zoom in, you will notice the syringe is now empty, the plunger pushed in; you run slightly slower upstairs than you do downstairs, and footstep sounds and frequency change as you run or sprint up and down staircases, too. The game is full of neat touches like these. Hell, you can even flush away any mess you find in a toilet. "It's deceptive," says co-creative director Harvey Smith. "The more you play, the more you see. We probably overdid it, in terms of layering..."

I'm not sure they did. Dishonored 2's best details reside in the periphery; all you need to do is remember to look up from time to time and it will reveal itself to be much more than you originally believed. There's a lot lurking out of sight in Dishonored 2, and it's a game that's always inviting you to tug at the handle of every closed window.

Yeah I guess it works as a clever little thing there right at the start of the game, players could turn 180 and just leave out the window or they'll probably explore a bit and move towards the desk and maybe pick up a note or two and interact with some memorabilia and then try to leave through that window only to wonder WTF as there's a chimney pipe thing blocking your movement until you climb back in and leave through the other window instead. Very Happy

The second game level up in the harbor area of Serkonos has I don't know how many little nooks and alternate ways you can proceed, almost every single area can also be reached with powers disabled though one or two can be very difficult to time correctly without the grab-thing of Emily or the blink ability of Corvo.
Whether it's intended for players to throw themselves off a building hoping to catch that railing before they hit the pavement is debatable I guess but it can be done though one or two area are almost completely out or reach without the use of powers heh.

Might not be quite as open for every single level but each hub area preceding the actual mission zone tends to have this type of open design although some parts might be a bit more closed off requiring you to take a specific path to reach certain areas since you can't quite climb/teleport/grab all the way up to the skybox or roofs of the highest buildings.

Unlike Assassin's Creed the guards won't miraculously be able to parkour with you either but a small rock or worse still a pistol bullet or other projectile can cut the climb short and make you crash against the street, ha ha.
Finding all the gold in particular requires exploring a lot of these zones for alternate paths or hidden secrets although it's nowhere near required to get the upgrades you actually want, you usually stumble upon a fair amount just by progressing whether it's full chaos or stealth and letting guards and the like live.
(Well I think you're allowed five - ten kills or so per map before it switches to high-chaos for the next level, probably varies a little bit depending on the total amount of NPC.)

I really like the exploration part of this game.
I also hated the mansion mission despite it being so awesome gameplay wise Very Happy Levels like this should be more frequent in games.

Oh and I reached the last mission and checked the stats for the first time. It seems someone has spotted me in previous missions and there goes my Ghost run Rage

ill be honest...

fuck that room, it had me stumped forever. I'm so used to games not having much in the way of interaction, that the fact you can open and close windows (but not ALL windows, mind you, just special KINDS of windows) really threw me for a loop and had me kinda frustrated until i accidentally saw the open window prompt...

and then rather than amazement and relief, it was mostly gritted-teethed grumbling..

Dishonored 2 Free Trial
Quote:
We’re pleased to announce that we’re releasing a free trial for Dishonored 2 on April 6! Available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, the free trial will allow players to dive into the first three missions of the campaign as either Empress Emily Kaldwin or the Royal Protector, Corvo Attano.

The free trial can be downloaded from Dishonored 2’s store page on the PSN Store, Xbox Marketplace and Steam. What’s more, players that decide to upgrade to the full game during or after the free trial will keep all of the saves made during the trial, and can continue enjoying Dishonored 2’s campaign from where they left off.

Yeah agree, they are releasing them way too late. Of course 3 missions are nearly half the game already, but eh. I do believe they have a mislead view on what a real Demo was.

+1

I want the stealth(even though it is optional in this game) genre to survive no matter what.

Once upon a time we had demos designed to let us test products before release, in full transparency so that one could evaluate the potential purchase. Now...we have these marketing-driven post-mortem 'free trials'* of products originally released in a completely broken state, with the sole purpose of trying to regain visibility. Next gen life of a gamer/customer. It's definitely better than nothing and always useful, though personally I'll go with the full demo. Razz

*with Andromeda being the exception: a pre-release free trial which considering the result and feedback, will probably be the last one xD

Sadly the only changes to a demo version is: less features and that you can get it for free.
Everything else is there: DRM and antitamper.

After trying the demo I know exactly what a bunch of you were saying about the mouse controls. Shits wack as and it's sitting at constant 60fps. Switch to a controller and it's smooth as butter.
edit: also the constant micro stutter is terrible
Fuck.

From the Steam forums:

Quote:
Just tried it with a 7700k and a GTX 1080. 100-120 fps on ultra but it feels like 30-60. Stuttering is still there and very present.

DO NOT LET ANYONE FOOL YOU IN THESE FORUMS! Lots of fanboys/shills lurking these forums that will throw words around like stable/constant 60fps/ solid fps. Do not believe a word. They are either lying or ignorant to the problem.

This issue will never be fixed.

It's the same shitty engine that used to be capped to 60fps in other games and for good reason. It's just not stable in terms of frametimes at anything other than 30 or 60fps ( or possibly 120 but haha nope ), and even at those there's some random juddering.
