CRYENGINE 5.2 will fully support DX12, CRYENGINE 5.3 will support Vulkan
Quote:
CRYENGINE fans, we’ve got some interesting news for you today. According to Crytek’s roadmap, CRYENGINE 5.2 (which will be made available in mid-August) will fully support DX12. Not only that, but the next version of CRYENGINE (5.3) – that is currently planned to be made available in mid-October – will support the Vulkan API.

Going into more details, the DX12 renderer for CRYENGINE 5.2 will support DX12 Multi GPU for VR, as well as the following features:

DX12 Renderer
- Scaleform Flash natively in DX12
- Partial RenderElements in new pipeline
- Fog/Clouds/Waters in new pipeline
- Deferred Decals in new pipeline
- AuxRenderer natively DX12
- VR Multi GPU support
- Tiled shading optimization (using light volume rasterization

DX12 Renderer
- Forward pass to use new pipeline
- SVOGI converted to graphics pass

On the other hand, CRYENGINE 5.3 will support the Vulkan API, as well as virtual memory resource management, improved Dynamic Env Probe and Env Probes workflow, and will sport various improvements to its SVOGI tech.

Now let’s see whether more developers will actually take advantage of Crytek’s engine!

Me Gusta

The engine is demanding but at least it delivers in terms of visuals (that is if developers are not idiots) Very Happy

Guess Kingdom Come: Deliverance will see another delay now. Very Happy
(I actually don't know if they had plans for a migration to Cry-Engine V, Wolcen/Umbra had but it's not the easiest to do though well KCD could certainly benefit from either D3D12 or Vulkan or perhaps ideally both as Vulkan isn't restricted to Windows 10 Very Happy )

I'd think backporting DX12/Vulcan support would be more feasible than updating to a newer version of the engine.

It can be, that's certainly true and come to think of it Ark does that a lot with newer additions to UE4 for example instead of switching to a full new build, results vary a bit though. Very Happy

EDIT: Unity seems to be able to do it pretty easily come to think of it with even 4.x to 5.x not being too complicated although when you read the changelogs well it's almost mandatory to upgrade due to the massive amount of fixes but it will break other stuff, kinda like a never-ending cycle. Razz

Correct me if I am wrong but I was under impression CryEngine (along with Crytek) no longer exists since the Amazon bought them and converted the engine into some VR-oriented crap?

@PowerGamer
CryEngine of course still exists.

What you mean is the fork of the CryEngine that is in use at Amazon:

In fact Lumberyard is probably the reason Crytek continues to exist; they weren't doing very good financially but Amazon paid them somewhere around $50-70M to fork Lumberyard.

No wonder.. they kept making awful games and wasting resources on them. They should stick to just improving their cryengine and selling licenses.

You'd think the writing would have to be on the wall for them this time. I can't see another bailout materialising. The best they can probably hope for is someone buys the rights to the engine, but I'd expect everything else would get the chop. But who would even want it? All the major players already have established engines. It would probably take another left-field entrant like Amazon last time.

Well what they're working on doesn't seem to be very high profile titles and making their game engine into pay what you want probably over poor adaption and competition against UE4 and Unity probably also isn't generating much money since most games developed on Cry-Engine 5.x appears to be mainly indie with some few exceptions.

So this bit of news is probably pretty accurate, guessing Ryse and developing the engine might have exhausted their budget and now the funds from the Amazon deal appears to be running out I take it.

They should have stopped developing ANY games and focused on their engine instead. ..
The main problem with their engine was lack of documentation and it wasn't easy to work with but afaik it's not the case now.. It would be a shame if cryengine got abandoned and forgotten. It deserves much more than dat shit unity.

That link says they haven't been making payments for 6 months. My guess is the Amazon deal never actually bailed them out of their original problem, it just put off the inevitable a little while longer.

There would be Frostbite and idtech 6 as well, both rock-solid engines when it comes to the combo performance/graphical fidelity, but alas, they're exclusive property of EA and Bethesda respectively. Razz In general, many big companies don't "share" their good engines, it's the same with Eidos/SE and the Dawn Engine, or CDProjekt and their REDengine.

Unity and Unreal indeed remain the only viable options for small/medium companies that can't afford building a new engine from scratch. It's a shame, but it could be worse all things considered (since both Unity and UE are constantly improving..sort of).

Indeed, hundreds of employees had to quit the company in the last years because of that reason (among the other things), all lead designers and producers (Homefront, Crysis 3), even the head of Crytek Usa and so on.

From the glorious Crysis, to this kind of pseudo-company ruled by one single megalomaniac sociopath and interns (slaves) 'developing' mobas and VR garbage Sad Laughing
