And what have they done with the sprites? They look different somehow. Kinda... cartoonish? I'm not sure I like it. |
Haha yeah, it seems that they went with the decision to add some sort of edge smoothing effect that resembles cel-shading. Pretty sure nobody asked for this, but thankfully they also said it will be optional (I damn hope so )

I really dont like the addition of black outlines to the characters, i mean why? It's not even consistent with the rest of the graphics. The animations are extremely choppy too.
Edit: ok so it's optional, then good (just read ixi's response).

Because most/all of their levels are screenshots from Unity with some minor touchups in Photoshop, not renders out of a 3D app with overpainting like BG1/2.

Looks like I have very old save game files from BG 1 tutu versions, and importing does not go well, all character items are missing
looks like only BG EE save works?
I also have BG2 saves, but that for sure will not work
I am not fan of a replay of BG EE even if I had forgot 90% of it

They don't let you create a new character?

Yeah, it's specifically for the BGEE (I haven't thoroughly played that version yet either, just tested a while back to check the changes).
Can't test it right now because of the lack of time and all the dozens of playthroughs that I must finish, but from what I'm reading impressions seem positive so far. Though as the tradition dictates, it probably still requires a few additional months to iron out all the potential problems. Being patient always pays off in such cases.
edit: Randir cleared this up

According to this you can start the expansion with a new character:
Quote: | PD: You can access Siege of Dragonspear in a few ways. Once the expansion pack is installed, you can:
A) Start a new game at the start of Siege of Dragonspear. Your character will be at an appropriate level for the adventure when you start, and you'll be given a party of companions from BG:EE based on your character's alignment.
B) Import your saved game from Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. The party you have in this save will be brought into Siege of Dragonspear with you.
C) Import your exported character from Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. This is like the first option, but you're bringing in a character that already exists and skipping the character creation part of starting a new game.
D) Play through Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and automatically transition to Siege of Dragonspear after the final battle. This is similar to B.
We'e also added a feature that will allow you to create an entirely custom party of up to 6 characters at the start of the game. In the past this was only possible by juggling save files around to create an entirely custom party. Now it's built into the game. |

Some people want old-school isometric party-based RPGs. Not everyone loves the console-centric action-laden new shit. I'd much rather Beamdog create new stuff like this, whatever the end result is, than bastardise the originals.

Some great writing. If Beamdog wanted to be modern BioWare, they certainly achieved it there.

so.. they're using unity you say? This is a new engine then? If you're going to go new engine, why not use the ToEE stuff or copy that? That was such a great experience..
when troika failed, who scooped up all their shit? I know Atari kept the D&D licenses at the time, but did they get the rights to their engine?

This uses the Infinity Engine.

No, they use Unity to assemble their levels and render out a 2D image. That is then taken into the Infinity engine as a background.
At least that's what some of them do, based on a former BG1 modder I was talking to a while back that got a job with them.

Also those black outlines look so retarded. I wonder which brain thought that would look good. |
Yes, it's real.
Quote: | “If there was something for the original Baldur’s Gate that just doesn’t mesh for modern day gamers like the sexism, [we tried to address that],” said writer Amber Scott. “In the original there’s a lot of jokes at women’s expense. Or if not a lot, there’s a couple, like Safana was just a sex object in BG 1, and Jaheira was the nagging wife and that was played for comedy. We were able to say, ‘No, that’s not really the kind of story we want to make.’ In Siege of Dragonspear, Safana gets her own little storyline, she got a way better personality upgrade. If people don’t like that, then too bad.”
“I got to write a little tender, romance-y side quest for Khalid and Jaheira where you could learn a little bit about how their marriage works and how they really feel about each other.”
There’s also four new companions, one of whom is gay, one of whom is bisexual. |
They want so badly to be modern BioWare.

Pretty much all major mods are currently broken due to the way SOD handles the dialog.tlk file.
Think I'll wait for mods to be fixed before I play.
