My girlfriend plays this and I watch and participate when I'm around. It's fun in small measures but I couldn't possibly play through something this tedious myself. I think my foremost problem is that progress isn't rewarding at all. Usually after a puzzle, you get another puzzle. When you find an interesting location, all there is is puzzles. When you complete a whole set of themed puzzles, a laser shoots out and that's it. The audiologs can't make up for that. It's progress for progress' sake. There's no anticipation of what comes next.

I disagree because I feel rewarded when I finally figure out the solution.

Some interesting puzzles but ultimately the lack of narrative sucks. Puzzles after puzzles after puzzles in a puzzle of puzzles...

I'm also disappointed by the lack of narrative. Other than a scant few tape recorders quoting like a and static props, not much to see
Maybe towards the end we'll see a crazy twist like Braid...
1 and 2 are still amazing.

The Witness is on track to sell (in terms of revenue, not copies) in 1 week (on PC/PS4) more than Braid did in a year (I assume on 360) - and Braid was a big hit. Steamspy's numbers are not accurate (lower than they should be) because it is early and it takes some time before they stabilize.
Blow says thanks to the great sales his next game will have at least an equal if not even larger budget.

I wonder if they will sell the news as "looks like thanks to PS4 the developer won't go bankrupt." Did anyone report on Blow's tweet that the PS4 version sold "only" about as much as the PC version? Probably not.
Updates:
Quote: | 30 January 2016 4:15pm:
Added Hungarian language support.
Display a warning when the game fails to save your progress.
30 January 2016 10:55am: Experimental Anti-Motion-Sickness Update #1
Wider FOV.
Completely disabled view bob.
Faster acceleration when walking / running.
30 January 2016 10:05am: Just pushed to beta 'future':
We now save your last-selected options in the launcher.
Fixed an incorrect edge in one of the panels at the top of the Keep belltower.
Fixed a mistake in the English subtitles.
Fixed savegame thumbnails being ugly if you are on low graphics settings and dynamic resolution kicks in.
Fixed some lightmap mistakes.
Added support for 16x MSAA and high-quality 4x resolve.
Added some more render_settings variables.
Fixed hairline cracks in the entry tunnel.
Removed a few extra unnecessary files.
Fixed that one of the jungle panels was sometimes blocked by leaves.
Fixed a minor cosmetic texture-repeat bug on one of the panels.
Added a missing [REDACTED] for a [REDACTED].
29 January 2016 7:00pm: Because we had some issues when making the previous patch, I have made a 'future' beta and made that patch live there. We are going to update this future branch later tonight.
28 January 2016 7:20pm: Improve asset streaming at low frame rates (reduces occurrences of low-res geometry for people at lower frame rates). Log more information for Radeon cards so we can try and debug more effectively. REVERTED at 8:09pm due to reported problems, will try again tomorrow.
28 January 2016 4:49pm: Fixed a coloring bug in one of the puzzle panels (it was solvable but a little bit confusing if you did certain kinds of incorrect solutions).
28 January 2016 3:10pm: Fixed a problem where the game would not launch (not even any launcher box visible) on Windows 7 with no service pack. (Most Windows 7 users did not see this since they are on at least Service Pack 1). |

I must retract my earlier statement, I'm liking this much more than I anticipated. The environmental clues (reflections, shadows, etc.) save the game from being monotonous as fuck.
The tetris-puzzles are fucking my brain, I must admit... really hard to solve some of them "in your head"... might need to bust out the old pen & pencil.

john Blow is a raging femniist SJW so I guess this should come as no surprise.
This game got a 10 out of 10 from IGN and all it is is a bunch of maze puzzles you could play on children's placemat at Denny's for free. But somehow, people have convinced themselves that this game is all high brow, nose-in-the-sky type stuff.

On the Steam forums, it's become impossible to distinguish elaborate trolling from genuine stupidity, the two things have been permanently merged xD
If you don't want your beloved brain cells to commit seppuku, just avoid going in there and keep your sanity intact.
That said (and aside from dem pear-y posts), it's clear that the developer is using piracy as a cheap trick to indirectly generate more publicity, while pointing the finger at a scapegoat that doesn't really exists since the numbers don't lie. That's a cheap move, he's also perfectly aware that a widespread piracy absolutely doesn't mean lost sales, in fact as per usual most of those who are enjoying the Isowitness will eventually end up buying the game. Perhaps they (well, we ) won't spend $40, but then again, the beauty of PC gaming is the insane amount of opportunities and deals around the interwebs. Methinks his butthurtness comes more from the aforementioned aspect rather than from the "thou shalt not yarr" facade.

Financial summary by Blow: http://the-witness.net/news/2016/02/fun-sales-fakts/
"Across all platforms, The Witness has totalled over $5 million USD gross revenue in the first week, and it has sold substantially more than 100,000 units."
"By number of units, the first week of each individual platform handily beats Braid’s first week of sales."
"The Witness launched on two platforms, PSN and Windows PC. Neither of these platforms dominates our sales; PC is very strong for us, and PSN is very strong for us."
"So, the game is doing great. That doesn’t mean we have broken even on our development cost yet! Because our development budget was so high, $5 million in revenue is not enough to recover it yet (because we split that revenue with the storefronts, we have to subtract VAT in Europe, etc). However, it is looking like, as time goes on, we should break even and make a comfortable safety margin on top of that, which will allow us to make more nice games in the future — unless some kind of world economic disaster happens."

And I was naively thinking that solving panels would be the gist of the gameplay. The game gets completely mental once you realize that like in a parallel world almost everything that you see can be a symbol/maze when you start looking for the unconventional "+1" extra puzzles. Shame on you, black monoliths!
Almost every different perspective related to a certain part/asset of the island counts. I'll probably never complete those, since I suspect they may require months to catch 'em all. Will keep trying to solve just the regular puzzles and see if there's some sort of endgame.
Gotta give credit to Blowman when it comes to the level design, it's considerably more well-structured than one is initially led to think, everything is there for a reason.

Yep, everything can be a puzzle. Shadows, tracks, drainage pipes, windmills, walls, etc. Sound also plays a part in it. And most of them have multiple "levels" to solve (with the black towers being a sort of score card). Altering your perspective will usually give you another solution. It's a bit deeper than some initially think.

Actually so far I found only one rule that I didn't get by playing or experimenting on the easy versions for that rule. So I think he is simply wrong about this point.
