Quote:
TACTICAL ‘MECH COMBAT RETURNS TO THE PC.

Harebrained Schemes is pleased to announce their return to Kickstarter this Fall to partner with Backers in co-funding the creation of BATTLETECH. Jordan Weisman, the creator of BattleTech and MechWarrior, is back with the first turn-based BattleTech game for PC in over two decades. Steeped in the feudal political intrigue of the BattleTech universe, the game will feature an open-ended Mercenaries-style campaign that blends RPG ‘Mech and MechWarrior management with modern turn-based tactics

Key points:
    Set in 3025
Turn-based tactical with a lot of RPG elements, because you'll not only be managing a lance of 'Mechs but also Mechwarriors as well
    PC & Mac
    Open-ended mercenary campaign
    Careers and skill trees
    Build your own mercenary unit
Vanguard (Founders) early bird pack - seemingly GenCon only (booooo!)
Apparently working with both PGI and Catalyst Game Labs, PGI for 'Mech art and CGL to coordinate with their fiction line
    Kickstarter will start in Autumn

OH YEAAAAAAH!! Jordan is bringing back Battletech!! Oh FUCK yeah! After Jordan's amazing return to form (not perfect by any means, but still no less than fantastic) with Shadowrun, I have nothing but high hopes for this! \o/ I wonder what form it's going to be in, HBS don't have much/any experience in making FP titles... so a Mech Commander/Shadowrun Returns style isometric tactical RPG?

Gotta get my Vulture/Mad Cat on!

Ok, that's some good fucking news there. I was pretty disappointed when Mechwarrior Tactics was tanked even though it was a little simplistic. This sounds much cooler to me. Will be interesting to see the kickstarter when it comes out. This might be another money sink for me. Maybe HBS was the "unknown buyer" that bought the rights last year when IGP went bankrupt. That would be sweet.

If you enjoyed MechCommander, and have an iOS device, you should check out "MechWarrior Tactical Command" - it's as close to a new MechCommander as we've seen in years.

But isn't Mechcommander an RTS ?

If it's turnbased I hope for something similar to Missionforce Cyberstorm but set in the BattleTech universe.

It was an RTS with no base-building, and many customization/upgrade options. Whether it's turnbased or RTS doesn't really make so much of a difference for me, as long as the spirit is the same.

I'd like to see a crescent hawk sequel. That'd be badass. What I don't want to see is another RTS. I want a turn-based tactical mech game. An RPG with turn-based tactical combat would be even better.

A bit prettier version of MegaMek would be nice, too. Haven't played that in awhile. There really isn't any turn-based tactical BattleTech game better than it if you're looking for something as close to the original physical game as you can get.

It pretty much sounds like that's what we're getting Shocked Very Happy I just hope it's not like that ill-fated tabletop-esque mech game we got a few years back, Mechwarrior Tactics, as I really didn't like that at all Sad

Tactics was pretty fun. It definitely had lots of room to improve though. If they could use that for combat, throw in a few more of the rules, take out all the bullshit cards and boosters and money-grubbing shits, it could be fun. I'd rather see a badass RPG though.

Mechcommander OmniTech is a standalone game based on Mechcommander 2 shared source code release by Microsoft. The Goal of the Mechcommander OmniTech mod is to create an upgraded and more easily moddable version of the good old Mechcommander 2. A game based in the universe of a great and fun franchise, a game with lots of tactical components and full of possibilities, which have unfortunately not being discovered by the Microsoft programmers or they simply couldn't do because of technical limitations and/or business pressure. Our Goal is NOT, to release a new campaign, there are actually a lot of good campaigns already available

Awwww hell. I think this is going to be an insta-back for me too. It'll be interesting to see what they have to show for the kickstarter campaign. If they impress me, I'm in. If they really impress me I'll get a box Smile

Audio interview with Mike McCain. He mentions some of the same info we have gotten earlier, about playing mercenaries, upgrading mechwarriors, having a lance, 3025, etc.

New info:
  • They are looking into multiplayer as a Kickstarter goal. PvP arena on Solaris VII.
  • Not using the same engine as Shadowrun Hong Kong. Something completely new with Unity 5 - a "fully 3D title"
  • Where Shadowrun is an RPG with turn-based combat, Battletech is turn-based combat with RPG elements, so they're reversing the priorities.
  • With Battletech it is much more the story of the world and the great houses and a more macro-level narrative than Shadowrun's personal stories and exposition-heavy narrative.
  • Story will be leading up to the 4th Succession War
  • They are currently early in prototyping and gearing up for the Kickstarter
  • Right now they are only focusing on PC and most likely Mac and Linux
  • Target audience: Same thing like Shadowrun, they want to please the passionate fans and at the same time freshen the look of things in the world and getting back to the roots of Battletech with the feudal conflicts.
  • Mike McCain is a big fan of the Battletech franchise and one of his first PC games was MechWarrior 2. Along with Jordan Weisman (Battletech), and Mitch Gitelman (Mechcommander), the team is inspired for this title.

http://www.sarna.net/news/interview-with-harebrained-schemes-about-the-upcoming-battletech-kickstarter/
Quote:
Mike: Both! We’re making a turn-based, tactical squad combat game. You’re going to command a lance of 4 ‘Mechs on the battlefield. It’s going to be a single-player mercenary-style campaign. MechWarrior 2 is a good reference for that. You’re going to choose which missions you want to take. You’re going to hire new MechWarriors, upgrade your ‘Mechs, get salvage. All that good stuff, from mission to mission.
Yes! MechWarriors will grow. We’re careful not to guarantee specific features here, but we’re looking at MechWarriors with different quirks, personalities, strengths and weaknesses that might manifest over time.

Quote:
2017. We’d like to think we learn a little bit from project to project. Shadowrun Returns was a blast and we’re really proud of it. We also want to make sure we have enough time. We’ve done this with Shadowrun and Golem Arcana several times now. We have a pretty good idea, on BATTLETECH we want to start with a new fully 3D engine so we’re going to make sure we do it right. We’re looking at early 2017.

Quote:
Nic: Is it going to be based on any of the Shadowrun engine at all, or are you starting from scratch?

Mike: No, for the most part it’s from scratch. ‘Mech combat is such a different beast. Shadowrun is hide behind cover, ‘Mechs is not so much.

Mitch: I think the experience is more destroy cover. That’s one of the things I loved about MechCommander. You could just blow stuff up.

Mike: That was definitely something on the art direction side of things I want to make sure we’re able to make ‘Mechs look really big, and have that kind of weight and power about them. Expect lots of things to step on and explode.

Kickstarter begins tomorrow at 10 AM PST. Single player campaign is a stretch goal but I doubt they'll have any trouble reaching it. Battles will be combined arms with mechs and vehicles, possibly also infantry.
