Standart IdTech 5 is soo plain. The custom one used in The Evil Within is something different - cool dynamic shadows, good textures overall... damn

27GB out of 34 is Megatextures
1 GB Videos + Eng language
rest is resources and some addition to textures

Someone has yet to explain to me how "megatextures" can be 10 times larger than "regular" ones used in other games and still look way worse...

It's easy. The whole game is like using one BIG texture placed on the whole terrain, so you can't see repetitive details and etcs. Everything on it it's unique. Smile

That is to little consequence tho if the result is so riddle with compression artifacts that you can't tell the difference...

And even if it is technically one single texture, what is preventing the texture artist to use the same tiles again? I don't see the benefit...

I see no benefit in it either.
But i see so many disadvantages with that Shittexture®
Like low res textures compared to many other games, textures not loading or bad performance

Same with Quake Wars too, MegaTexture is impressive for distance world terrain and even things like rocks/roads, it just sucks for finer details and local area textures Sad We should have a mix of MT for distance terrain and standard texturing for everything else, I think that would satisfy everyone.

Of course they did. Another big advantage Carmack was talking about was that artists could easily stamp the same texture over the terrain = speed. It's not necessarily the uniqueness.

I mean look at this. This is how RAge looks unmodded. Amazing looking game... need to replay it. And man if it wasnt a great shooter. The way enemies react to hits is just fantastic. that + custom animation for npc !!!
Need insta replay !
and yeah... 60fps maxed on 8800gt is an achievement... and the game was 60fps on old consoles too

Megatextures is shitty because it doesn't take advantage of the fact that artists still create textures separately for each object and then re-use them all over. Then they might paint over them with "decals" to make them unique.

In most games these "decals" are just separate objects that are rendered on top of the other objects to make the textures look unique.

I don't understand why they decided to bake those decals into a single huge texture before shipping the game, essentially creating this massive texture from a bunch of small textures that repeat and overlap everywhere. And I'm pretty sure the only reason why Rage textures were so low quality is that they couldn't fit it on disk - not performance reasons. But what they could do easily is to ship with textures and decals separately, like any other game out there, and then just bake them into a mega-texture at runtime.

It's a win-win. FC4 does this for its terrain, it's essentially a dynamic megatexture. And another advantage is that you can modify it dynamically (e.g. skidmarks, explosions) for which I'm assuming Rage is still using the traditional approach (which mega-textures were intended to replace in the first place).

another idtech game another thread flooded with obsessive texture talks

i for one like how idtech feels, yeah it has some shortcomings, but what engine doesn't. gaming would be pretty boring if there was just one engine used in all games.

Yes, how dare we talk about Tech5's primary selling point, MegaTexture, in a thread about a game using Tech5

What a fucking genius you are.

How dare someone wish to see people talk about other aspects of a game than just textures in a Wolfenstein: The Old Blood game thread and not idtech engine thread.

It probably unlocks 1 AM or some such, I haven't checked if there's any differences between regions such as a earlier unlock in US or AU but I don't think Bethesda does that, if it's not the standard time of 19.00 afternoon (Here in Sweden at GMT+1) then it's probably a single unlock date at around midnight UK time. Smile

EDIT: Says May 5th here. Smile

EDIT: May 5th for Germany as well here and any other territories I've tested so it'll probably be a tomorrow late afternoon unlock.

I forgot what Valve's actual time zone were but it's somewhere around 1 PM or 2 PM I believe which translates to 19.00 here, unfortunately but that's how it is and thankfully some games do unlock early in Australia and Asia so using VPN to unlock the game up to half a day early can be quite useful not to mention games that use the Tuesday and Friday for US and EU respectively unlock time.

Remember the "Nightmare" Wolf3D level in The New Order? Well there's NINE of them in The Old Blood, one for each chapter;

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/05/04/wolfenstein-3d-will-be-playable-in-wolfenstein-the-old-blood

Quote:
Re-created in The Old Blood by a designer using the original Wolf3d data and tilemap, Gustafsson explains that the entire "first episode" of Wolfenstein 3D will be available to play throughout The Old Blood, including the boss fight with Hans Grosse and the secret tenth floor.
