Standart IdTech 5 is soo plain. The custom one used in The Evil Within is something different - cool dynamic shadows, good textures overall... damn

Someone has yet to explain to me how "megatextures" can be 10 times larger than "regular" ones used in other games and still look way worse...

It's easy. The whole game is like using one BIG texture placed on the whole terrain, so you can't see repetitive details and etcs. Everything on it it's unique.

And even if it is technically one single texture, what is preventing the texture artist to use the same tiles again? I don't see the benefit...

Im pretty sure they did. I remember some posts on neogaf iirc where people were pointing out copying and pasting.

I see no benefit in it either.
But i see so many disadvantages with that Shittexture®
Like low res textures compared to many other games, textures not loading or bad performance

Of course they did. Another big advantage Carmack was talking about was that artists could easily stamp the same texture over the terrain = speed. It's not necessarily the uniqueness.

Megatextures is shitty because it doesn't take advantage of the fact that artists still create textures separately for each object and then re-use them all over. Then they might paint over them with "decals" to make them unique.
In most games these "decals" are just separate objects that are rendered on top of the other objects to make the textures look unique.
I don't understand why they decided to bake those decals into a single huge texture before shipping the game, essentially creating this massive texture from a bunch of small textures that repeat and overlap everywhere. And I'm pretty sure the only reason why Rage textures were so low quality is that they couldn't fit it on disk - not performance reasons. But what they could do easily is to ship with textures and decals separately, like any other game out there, and then just bake them into a mega-texture at runtime.
It's a win-win. FC4 does this for its terrain, it's essentially a dynamic megatexture. And another advantage is that you can modify it dynamically (e.g. skidmarks, explosions) for which I'm assuming Rage is still using the traditional approach (which mega-textures were intended to replace in the first place).

How dare someone wish to see people talk about other aspects of a game than just textures in a Wolfenstein: The Old Blood game thread and not idtech engine thread.

Remember the "Nightmare" Wolf3D level in The New Order? Well there's NINE of them in The Old Blood, one for each chapter;
http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/05/04/wolfenstein-3d-will-be-playable-in-wolfenstein-the-old-blood
Quote: | Re-created in The Old Blood by a designer using the original Wolf3d data and tilemap, Gustafsson explains that the entire "first episode" of Wolfenstein 3D will be available to play throughout The Old Blood, including the boss fight with Hans Grosse and the secret tenth floor. |
