Hi all,
I must get something off my chest or else I die from frustration.
Sockel 2011/2011-3 motherboards and hexa-core CPUs from Intel, aswell as DDR4 memory suck ass.
First of all, they are all connected, meaning you need a 2011(-3) mobo for a hexa-core xeon or i7 and they all go with DDR4 memory, there is no backwards support for DDR3.
I have read a bit into it and I came to the conclusion, that it's FAR better to chose a current-gen Devil's Canyon i7-4790K on Sockel 1150 using DDR3 RAM on a Z97 mobo for example, then go OC.
At 4.7 Ghz the 4790K outperformes the very limited (OC-wise) i7 5930K by 2-5% in CPU-only benchmarks and in games the difference is even higher to the advantage of the 4790K.
Given that the 4790K costs half of a 5930K, the DDR3 RAM is 30% cheaper than the DDR4, and the Socket 1150 mobos start at 90€ where the 2011-3's start at a whooping 240€,
even when realistically speaking the 1150 Mobo I'd take is 160€ with builtin Wifi and SLI support, still 80€ cheaper than the cheapest 2011-3.
And that is only the situation with Mobo+CPU+RAM.
The Situation of the current GPU market is completely FOOBAR'ed.
A) It's not worth having a Titan X, because 980 SLI is more cost-efficient.
B) It's not worth having a 980, because (depending of which 980 you'd chose) it might be more cost-efficient to buy two 970 (EVGA SC ACX2.0 is 364€).
C) The price-range for a single 970 is from 300€ (shitmodels) over to around and less than 400€ (for GOOD models) up to 500€ for high-end models with Hybrid/WC and builtin OC.
D) Even when considering one single 970, it is (again) more cost-efficient to go 960 SLI, because good 960's with 4Gb VRAM (as quick as one single 680) start at around 250€.
I fucking HATE this situation, man.
I wanna upgrade my GTX 680, I have a 2600K that's >2 years old and still keeps up well, any change to the CPU requires me replacing the Mobo also, however I most definetly wanna keep my 16 fucking GB of DDR3-1600 CL9 RAM...
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, YOU GUYS?

Consider getting used graphics cards. Maybe you'll find some nutter who's replacing his 970.

why are you comparing 980 to 780ti? you have 680, no? so compare it to that. i have a 780 so i'm waiting for 980Ti, but for you even 970 would be a big upgrade.

this whole rant is so stupid. maybe YOUR 2600K is only 2 year old, but platform 2600K is running on is 4+ year old (including CPU which is also 4+ years old). you can't possibly expect 4+ year old platform still support latest CPUs, especially extreme CPU's which are completely different "branch".
and why do you even consider 5930K, it's so not worth it. 5820K is great, overclocks like a beast and cost pretty much the same as 4790K. yes mobo and ram is more expensive, but 2 extra cores are totally worth it.
this is exactly what happened with dual core vs quad core. when dual core was past its prime and quad core started taking over, people who paid a little extra for quad core reapt the benefits, while people stuck on dual core saw that their computers are getting outdated fast.
