Except that all the reasons you point out for players potentially not having any effect on the economy are all present in ED and players do affect the economy greatly there.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that what you're saying won't happen, but considering we still don't know shit about this (even with the video) all I have to go on is ED as an example. And none of your potential failure points (instances, NPC traders) do that in ED. If they get it right, they'll get similar results to ED; if players do end up barely affecting the economy, the reasons you point out aren't why

from what i read, ED economy will go to toilet as soon a player/corp will get a huge amount of money to control the main resources.
if they want succeed with that kind of market they need to hire a team of real world market advisors, and learn shitloads from eve economy book.
if they want to succed need to start wth a limited player driven economy, and open the markets gradually. again, we have a working economy in eve from they can learn a lot. and not even eve economy is 100% player driven.

God no. I don't, at all, all it means is some fucking nolifer guild will score all the good stuff or the system forces people into playing at a very specific time else they lose out. That's not fun.. THAT's a chore :\ |
mm I would disagree - I think that one-of-a-kind items (or really very rare) is important in a game like this to give that extra reason for exploring and taking part in unannounced events (unnanounced is important, because then there is no way a guild can 'win everything'.
It's important to have 'epeen' items in games like this, otherwise noone will ever get their own identity and that makes a game look very sterile. (look at Eve....)

what can i say, i'm a sucker for hard working rewards. event cosmetic ones. especially if i can get them solo.
personally i dont like offline play, if i have a choise will always go for a persistent online server.
with as many as posible events (of course, in the limit of lore) as is possible. even without rewards. random black holes, random drops from alien fleet and so. a static boring server don't make me want to play.

Random events with hundreds of other people all flying around, randomly shooting, shouting, and being douchenozzles. Sounds like a blast! Orgrimmar in Space!

orgrimmar is not crowded because we have events there, is crowded because is a main hub, and is a place where people gather for local chat to. and probably we will have central hubs in rsi to.

Fine. Then change "event" to "hub" and it will be the same thing. The planet they landed on in the PU demo at CitizenCon, it looked awesome didn't it? Now imagine that with 50-100 other people, idling and shouting? Greaaaaaaat. Then you have "events" in other online games like Star Trek Online, which *all* play out exactly like above. People flying around in ships, shooting randomly, spamming chat with shouted bullshit whilst waiting for the next event to take place, like the Borg constant invasions, etc.

well.
in eve i have only my corp open, all local chat is hidden in main hubs. (2000+ scammers, 1-2 message/s). i unhide local chat only in <0.5 and null.
same shit in wow, i dint had local/trade chat open since vanilla in main cityes. only guild chat is open. same shit in any other mmo actually.
and about events i hate events like they have in sto/nwn and so. i was thinking like 1 unique event / month. with different objective to complete (in different locations), from fightning to manufacturing (so all people will participate) and universe will evolve depending of the outcome.

Corp = guild, and Sabin is saying he wants no part of that, or any of the forced 'you are online therefore you MUST play MP and be sociable, otherwise you're destined for nothing, you might as well play X3.'
I think the bit lost here is that MMO does not HAVE to mean you must be in a group, guild or whatever. That's the argument I see time and time again in MMORPG - MMO means you shouldn't expect to play solo, and therefore PvP should be expected, and PvP is pointless without a guild otherwise you won't get the kewl lewt, and therefore you are a newb and you will die. a lot.
Eve is precisely the same - in fact in Eve it's considered normal to gank as much as possible, because that's the way it should be. Fuck you. Fuck all Eve players who have progressed into the realms of 'leetness', because that's precisely the reason Eve is haemorrhaging subs every month. New players don't want to come in, grind for ever to get something useful, and then dare to venture into low or nullsec, and immediately be shot at because they can.
ED is looking more and more promising, in that there is plenty of opportunity to do the whole PvP thing, but if you are looking for a more relaxed game, you can simply opt to play solo, in the same universe, and avoid all that.
Social interaction is only effective if it is not forced.

Offtopic but...
Sab have you always hated online play?
I really dislike playing with other people (well people I don't know), but it has not always been like that. I just think communities are now a lot more acidic/lazy/stupid and that is the reason why. Sure you always had asshats but it seems the ratio is quite higher now, that most of the time I'm forced to either not play the game or turn off every public channel.
(Yes, just pure curiosity really )

Precisely. To hell with that, I really do want no part of it.
@Morphineus
Yeah, I've always been the same. I like the idea of some MMOs, but I invariably play for a while and then realise that you're not going to get anywhere unless you join up with a guild and get coordinated, or being forced into PvP. Then, no matter what game it is, the stuff above is *always* prevalent; you can't move anywhere in hubs because fuckers with their bots are crowding the place or spamming chat, kids bouncing around everywhere because "teh funnies", or dozens of people crowding mobs/events waiting to respawn I've always been a crotchety old man, even when I was a nipper

Also, this flew by everyone today;
http://www.dsogaming.com/news/star-citizens-fps-module-to-be-released-early-next-year-inspired-by-cs-arma-kill-zone/
[REDACTED] (I really wish they'd reveal who it is, it's been two years now) held an AMA on Reddit and answered some questions about their portion of the game, namely the FPS module which is coming out "early Q1 2015" and that inspiration for FPS style came from CS, Rainbow Six, ARMA and KillZone. They gave a small example that made me all tingly;
| Quote: |
“A Persistent Universe experience. I’m a stealthy, solo player. I find a wrecked ship, i know scavengers will be around soon. I find a crate and put myself in it. I let the scavengers take the crate and put me in their ship. When i’m on their ship, some time later, i get out of the crate. Very quietly, i rummage around and find some goodies i like. I steal those… now i can either – A) Jump out the airlock and call a ride or B) go to their engine room and self destruct their ship or C) quietly hunt and execute the entire staff and take their ship…. or Z) they could have scanned the crate properly before loading it, blasted it with their ship and me with it….”
|
Sounds awesome but I doubt it will ever pan out like that. Still, in SP/solo mode rather than against human players; it sounds great.

I really don't understand why they feel the need to hide the dev behind FPS. It has to be some well known dev. But who?

In addition, the team was inspired by Counter-Strike, Rainbow Six, Arma, Delta Force and Kill Zone.....
|
Counter Strike - the game where you run faster with your knife out!
ARMA - the game where an AI grunt with a pistol can drop you with one shot at a thousand yards!
Kill Zone - Pew pew *drool*
Rainbow Six and Delta Force - The only decent ones of the bunch.
If they combine elements from all of those games together it's going to be an abortion worthy mess!

Well we should know by PAX. It would be quite funny if it was just another branch Chris Roberts started up just for Star Citizen.

What is this I just read
| Quote: | I heard from a trustable source that they will launch close to the end of the year a carrier.
These are some things i heard about it:
It will be roughly 1.5 size of the Idriss
Will be able to launch and store about 10 hornets.
The hornets will be flayable by human crew or controlled by the carrier captain like in EVE
No offensive weapons, just class 9 turrets, but plenty of them.
There will be a limited quantity - 1000 .
Price is not sure but arround 2000, including LTI. |
fucking really? for real anyone lol?

haha. It's already P2W and it hasn't even come out yet. (Uhh yeah, I'm sure you can earn everything in game but it'll take you 1.2E42 years of non-stop grinding to buy it. )

A carrier and other bigger ships should be something organizations need to pool credits for in order to buy, you know as a long-term goal. Individual players buying carriers? I don't know if I want carriers to be that common.
There's the large carriers, and then there's "Escort carriers" which are considerably smaller in size. Perhaps that's what they're going to allow people to buy and not the biggest ones.
If the only point of this game is to generate credits so that you can buy more ships then yes, I think it will inevitably feel like you're grinding missions/enemies before long. There's limits to how varied missions and enemies can get, and I'm not expecting this game to be a revolution. It is already tangled up in the instancing and low player-count per zone for example.

I hope that free view and orbit wireframe option on the model is not the actual "models" wireframe.
