I'm glad it's coming for android as well (I know, I know). BGEE was surprisingly playable on my phone, I was taken aback just how well everything worked with a touch screen.
I never got far into this when it came out, and I never bought it, so:
Could you carry over BG characters into this in the old versions?
No you can't import saves, for the sequel I also believe you have to start a new game since it switched over to 3rd Edition (A simplified variant of it if I remember correctly.) but I could be wrong.
EDIT: Oh it's even in the FAQ on their website.

Q: Can I import a Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition or Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition character?
A: No, you'll need to create a new character for your game in Icewind Dale. We have provided a collection of six custom-built pre-generated characters for your party to start, which you can either use or replace with your own creations.
Yeah, kind of surprising that they're not doing Torment before IWD, actually. Though maybe they're going to tie Torment:EE in with the release of its spiritual sequel, Numenera?

I would think the primary reason is level of difficulty. IWD is still 2nd Edition Forgotten Realms, so it's presumably a fairly simple transition of BG1/2 assets. Torment using the Planescape setting will likely require more effort. IWD2 as well possibly, seeing as it uses 3rd Edition.

Cool, the class kits esspecially might change the game nicely - since it's so focused on combat. And new content never hurts (or hurts rarely ). Will buy
Old-school RPG enhancer Beamdog has Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition nearly ready to go. The release date for the PC (Windows/Linux) and Mac versions is 30th October. It will be available from Beamdog's store, Steam and GOG.
"The mobile versions should be very close as well," project leader Trent Oster said on Twitter (via PC Gamer).
Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition is the old Icewind Dale RPG plus:

shame I didnt play much of these old school rpgs back in the day but I just couldnt stand the look and feel of the infinity engine.
Really looking forward to Torment Tides of Numenera
Dont mess with God, he can impregnate your girlfriend/wife without taking his pants off!
I still don't get the appeal of these re-released versions since the graphics are not even updated. Can anyone explain to me? The bug fixes and stuff can mostly just be found online.
Graphics assets are not updated maybe, but the engine is working better (smooth scrolling, somewhat better animations, prettier view distance fog, shadows etc). I bought myself a 3D accelerator pretty late (around 2000.) so I played my share of 2D games, but I can't stand that DirectDraw horror of the original Infinity engine right now, it's just awful and no mods can fix that.
It seems much of the source assets from the early Infinity Engine games were lost so even if they wanted to say make higher resolution sprites for characters they wouldn't be able to without a lot of time and money invested so they prioritize other parts of the game.

In the Baldur's Gate games they added new companions with their own personal quests, also improved interface significantly and fixed long-standing bugs. I think they also externalized some game data to ease modding?
The reworked engine made it run better on modern and future systems and allowed for mobile releases. It's also cool to not need mods and tweaks to get widescreen etc. And no need to fiddle with that archaic configuration utility or juggle with CDs.
They're not remakes and they're not HD versions, they are Enhanced editions of those games. Took them some months to iron out the massive bugs they introduced, though. Infinity engine seems to be a clusterfuck internally though, those designers spilled blood to get those original games released in a playable state. Good old times.
About Icewind Dale, its story is weak and it's not worth the effort.
