Final visual quality is what matters to me. I really don't care how it's achieved. I don't care that it's all "cheap tricks". From my perspective finding such tricks - ones that fit a certain product - is precisely what a programmer's job is all about. There's completely no reason either, why such tricks can't be used in conjunction with other, more traditional measures, up to a certain degree - again, if it fits. Astronauts didn't do that here (probably because it really wasn't needed and there would be a price to pay in performance), but I can easily imagine adding more interactivity/physics and other stuff on top of it.
There's no rule that states every game has to use the same method of producing visuals and at the end of the day, each and every one of them has it's limitations in what it can achieve and show to the player. Choosing these limitations wisely is where the trick lies. Quality is the determining factor here and as far as I'm concerned, Ethan Carter delivers more than most, while requiring a fraction of the processing power. Is there a price to pay for that? Sure. But if I have to choose, I'd rather have a beautiful game with stellar performance and some drawbacks, than one that uses every possible bell and whistle at every possible moment, often runs like crap and usually looks worse than VoEC anyway.

I finished the game as well, it was good. I wouldn't say great, though, because of some design limitations and constraints that ruined part of the fun for me.
While I appreciated the lack of silly visible arrows and annoying huds for the tardo generation, the investigation part could have been more elaborate and, well..deeper. Something akin to ye old adventure games of the 90s for example would have been nice, with elements to combine/analyze instead of the usual find item->place item. But I get why the devs went this way, it's more like an interactive "experience" rather than a conventional game, a visual book even.
Because the game sure as hell loves its visuals, they're amazing. And the music is very fitting as well, the combo is surely interesting. As for the narration/story, I liked it, but honestly it could have been more involving. Still, I'd say it's recommended (~7,5ish/10) as long as you don't expect too much in terms of depth and length.

Problem is these days AAA games are not PC games, they are simply console games which run on PC. If AAA devs developed PC games and were told to push the boundaries as per the glory days we would obviously see visuals far superior to the rubbish we see now.
As for Ethan Carter sure the game is quite shallow but it's a visual feast. It reminds me so much of Dear Esther but obviously better. It's slow paced, atmospheric and gorgeous all at the same time.
I just love walking around, exploring every nook and cranny while soaking up the atmosphere. This is one of those gems you dont see coming but reels you right in.
I'll take this over the hyped up, dumbed down consolised horseshit we're fed on a regular basis.

Help me
Spoiler: | What the hell are we supposed to do in this game, I walked for about an hour and ended up at a house where I could walk through doors with a blue aura around them and also got audio with Ethan and his mum. Then I preceded up a hill and read a letter about witch. Now I'm at a church with a wheelbarrow, dead crows and blood stains. I also went into what I think was a mausoleum with a crow gutter and switch.
Also the magic blue thingy which you do with the A button doesn't seem to work any more.
Wtf is this shit, I'm confused, agitated and want to cry. Some you seem to like this game a lot I on the other hand have no idea wtf is going on |

Spoiler: |
These are all puzzles and pieces of story you have to solve. For example, with these blue doors - if you look into the images of the portals you can see on the other sides there are rooms of the other big house nearby. All you need is to align all the rooms properly, juts like how they are in the mentioned building.

Yep that one, but you can leave it for after you complete the cemetery. The game doesn't force you to do them in order. And actually I noticed that the events depicted at the railways happened after the events in the cemetery.
I could have told you exactly what to look for and where, but it really isn't hard to do if you explore enough, so that would ruin the fun.
