B lenses should help if you are nearsighted, if you aren't keep the A lenses.

Welcome to the club

ED is amazing with the DK2 indeed, in the Lakon 6, which has bottom cockpit windows, you can almost feel the precise moment you hit the dock.
And these hyperspace sequence ! Drooling

Not sure what kind of hardware you're running, but my GTX 770 OC is struggling pretty hard with this game. Be prepared to lower your settings. I started on High and the judder was so bad I stopped playing after a few seconds. Loaded up FRAPS and took some screens, realizing I was getting 50-65 fps. Set my preset to Low and the judder almost disappeared completely. I still get occasional judder....and even occasional judder is godawful. I'm definitely getting an 880 when they hit. Pretty epic game though. I still have absolutely no clue what I'm doing, but it's pretty damn beautiful.

The judder is because they are using an old SDK. Once they release a build with SDK version 0.4, you should see it smooth.

I have a 680GTX, and it's very smooth. Have it on max, using FXAA.

Not trying to be a dick at all, but I think your tolerance for the judder might just be way higher than most. Have you actually checked your fps? There are a couple threads on the Oculus subreddit specifically about ED specs and fps and here are some people's frame rates.

Titan OC'd @ 1.3GHz: Anything above Low drops below 75fps.
R9 290x 4GB: 45-75 fps on High
Gtx 680: 45-60 fps (unspecified settings)
Gtx 780 TI: Drops to 30fps in space stations, 75fps outside
GTX 780 3GB OC: High: 53-75, Low: 73-75
And my GTX 770 OC gets 50-65fps on High. 70-75fps on Low with occasional bigger drops.

It's just hard for me to imagine that whatever fps you're getting with your 680 feels "very smooth" on High when my slightly faster card on High was causing such horrible judder that I seriously had to take it off within 15-20 seconds. Carmack was not joking when he said that a single dropped frame in VR feels like "being punched in the temple". Of course, the judder is much more bearable when you're not rotating your head, or at least rotating your head very slowly. I didn't notice it at all when moving my head positionally, but that's pretty self-explanatory. I definitely cannot wait for them to get it working properly with Direct Mode and Timewarp.

Wait, what? Have they upgraded the engine then or fucked it up entirely now?

It was far from flawless before, but except in asteroid belts I never dropped below 75 FPS (GTX 770).

Dont forget, the engine has to produce the image twice for the Rift.

Yes, but that still doesn't warrant that kind of a performance hit on GK104, let alone GK110. I had it fully maxed out, dropping to medium and especially low shouldn't make GK110 sweat like that.

Seems I need to fire it up, haven't had time since it went public.

Yes really.

It's not an interlaced image KC. The left image is at a slightly different angle than the right. Some engines cheat and duplicate a frame and simply fuck with existing depth information for the other eye, but those look worse in 3D as well (CryEngine for example does that).

It does render twice.

... at lower resolution Smile

Alas wouldn't it be a good idea to get 2 mid end cards and run them in cf/sli? Each card would only have to render 960x1080, should suffice, no?

(although I have no idea how technicaly dual cards work Razz )

I know the 2 images are rendered from 2 different pov. That's the point.
But the resolution rendered is still 1080p and not twice that. It was explained... somewhere... sorry Laughing

While that is great on paper, sadly reality doesn't allow that Sad

At the moment, the two cards pretty much work independently, there's no synchronisation between them. Which is exactly why SLI and CFX suck balls. Until that changes, they will continue to suck as they will continue to have microstuttering Smile

Read better KC, no one said it's rendering _at_ twice 1080p.

We said it renders at 1080 twice. Notice where the word "twice" comes in.

What happens is that it renders at 1080p once, then "shifts camera" a little for the other eye, renders again. Because the shift is so minimal, a lot of the work it did the first time still applies, but not everything. No, it's not the same as rendering 3840x2160, but it's not the same as rendering at 1920x1080 either.

It doesn't render at 960x1080 or 640x800 like a lot of people seem to think. That's the eye-render target, not the primary render target.

And if I'm really nitpicking, even saying it renders at 1080p is wrong, because rendering at 1080p isn't enough due to distortion. Get the hint yet? Wink

The recommended render target resolution with Oculus' SDK is higher than the native screen resolution. The scary thing is it'll only get higher as FOV increases. Here's an old info graphic about it for DK1, but you get the idea.

http://i.imgur.com/MR530gR.png

And this was from EverydayVR about UE4.

"I've now estimated UE4's default ScreenPercentage at about 171, corresponding to their default hmdwarp value of 1.715. This means the render target at 1080p screen resolution is 3293x2058."

Not sure if you've played Q2 lately, but it really isn't that good of a shooter anymore. It was very good at its time, but now it's just meh. I used to love it. Software renderer, then on voodoo 2, I was mesmerized. But playing it now, it's quite the meh.

Naw, I haven't it in ages and I wasn't massively enamoured even when it first came out, it was fun and I enjoyed it more than Quake 1 (I know, sacrilege!) but it has long since been surpassed by vastly superior titles .. like Unreal Smile Still, playing it in VR should be good for a laugh Very Happy

it wont come out in 2015... I don't think so. Not enough big devs content (tho plenty of content as it it... but its not mainstream content)
1080p screen is still prolly not enough. they could easily include 4k oled screens in 2015 and but it would not be possible to tell people to choose 1080p res on those screens.

There is still a LOT to fix and rethink. Software and hardware. It is fantastic as it is (I've ordered on may 10th so i MIIIIGHT get mine this month, so i will post my real impressions then).
I've only had dk1 so far but even that was amazeballs.

Really impatient to get dk2 Very Happy

"prolly" lol wut

And there is "plenty" of content? A few demos that people did in Unity. Probably the most terrible of the general purpose engines, yuck. Few demos here and there that look nice, but come on, let's be real, the demos are shit.

Games support is lacking too, but it's getting better. Still the biggest issue is the terrible SDK software, that crashes, has orientation issues (how hard is it to define portrait and landscape?). The idea that software has to be recompiled with a newer SDK which has no public API changes (0.3 -> 0.4) is the most retarded software design. Don't they have Carmack in there somewhere as a chief of something? Laughing

Sorry, the thing is fun and all, but you'd think that the time they had before doing crowdfunding, plus the time they had since dk1, they'd close the software front at least.

So far the only really amazing thing with dk2 has been Elite, and it's ridiculously buggy as hell still. They have to recompile with the new SDK, and then maybe it will just crash, instead of starting every time in some stupid orientation that is anything but the correct one.
