so i am building a new pc case for myself. (Almost) completely self made. So i add pics of my progress :

it starts like this (12mm solid steel) :

then we combine :

and combine some more :

then i cut the (alu) panels :

then we cut out the holes in the panels (5x 200mm fan, 1 x dvd/bd rom, 1 power/reset/usb panel, mobo backpanel, psu)

this one is pre-finish (notice the edgy round corners)

so the outer panels are done.

next week i'll buy a cheap tower and salvage the PCI-E panel (not really easy to do by "hand") as well as other parts (like hdd tray and the usb/power/reset button) and implent them.

All the holes are "hand made". First i drilled a SHITLOAD of 4.3mm holes around, then hammered it out and then filed them. I'm really proud of that, since they are near perfect round. By hand Smile

More to come Smile

add: oh and yeah, on the back, there is a 140x280 cutout for a h100i cooler Smile

Nice, keep posting Smile

Make sure that you don't risk shorting anything though and if you're going to create holes for cable routing, stick to standard dimensions so you can cannibalise rubber grommets from another case too Wink

+1

I work with metal (sheetmetal worker) and I can get my hands on pretty much any metal i would ever like for a case (within resonable range ofc).

But even though ive got everything I need + the skill to make a case...I still go for buying them on the net Razz

shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.

Wooden case would be damn cool if it was made right. I know quite a few carpenters, but no idea if they are good enough to make a cool case.

i'm especially proud of the 5 200mm cut outs. Those are all manually done. I.e. drilled like a trillion holes and then with a hammer and a .. whatever it's called .. broke it out and then filed them to the perfect round that they are now lol. It's alu, so it's not the hardest job, but still, they're quite close to perfect round, so that's nice.

Going to hunt for old towers the next couple days, so i can salvage the shit out of them (especially mobo support, backpanel, HD casings etc. etc. I really don't feel like making them myself. Especially since those have have to be VERY exact (especially the mobo ones). After that it's basically down to assemble the whole thing. Hopefully next week tops (i also take it easy this week a bit, after having worked almost 60 hours last week, including friday and sunday night ...). I'm spent ...

Nice stuff!

But won't the steel frame corrode the aluminium? You better put some shim between them, maybe sticky felt or something like that!

thanks, will check that out Smile

So and here some more pics. Now everything is screwed together and also added some strength. Next is the interior.

some of the interior done :

PSU support/holder and HDD rack. Will add a SSD rack on top of it. It's only loosely screwed, so it may look a bit "off" rofl. The HDD bays are swiss precision, you can slide them in and they hold, without the need to fix the hd.

Also keep in mind, once i am done making the pieces, i'll polish everything (also all the screws you see, will be cut off).

oh also the hd rack isn't fixed yet. And not on it's final position.

yeah, recovered an old tower today, from which i'll salvage the motherboard back plate and more importantly the rear pci/e slots. The plate i'll probably make one my own, using the recovered one as a "model". Hopfully i get that done tomorrow, so the last 2 days of this week i can get all the rest done. I.e. drill all missing holes, cut all screws that are too long etc and pre-finish the corners etc. Then next week i polish everything (that needs polishing) with some 400 or something grain paper (or more, have to check in the store i guess).

oh and also have to add the power/reset button plate and a support for the dvdrom.

pretty happy. Was able to make the mobo backplate and rear. Also a little support for the dvdrom. Now i can start "cleaning up". I.e. cut all the screws, file corners, polish etc.

Probably the part that will take the longest lol. Also thinking of spraying the entire inside in black (and keeping the outside metallic).

so, all pieces done and cleaned.

the hd rack isn't fully screwed together, that's why it looks a bit off. And of course all pc parts inside are trash Smile

Next week i'll order all the fans etc. I also will hide all edges, corners etc. with black band (kevlar or something). Not sure yet, if i'm going to paint the whole thing or not (at least the inside i think will be black or something). Or maybe chrome rofl.

PS : i haven't worked with metal or anything like this in like ..18 years lol. So i'm quite proud of my result.

I think im making mine in copper. Only problem is handling it (not the actual handling, but you need gloves as the fat from your fingers leaves marks. Once its finished you can cover it in chemicals which will make sure it stays shiny and when its finally dry - you can touch it without gloves no problems Smile

everything is screwed together.

i simply cut off half off the 2 lateral bars, so they fit together (like logs i guess) and then 1 screw through them and into the vertical one.

like this :
