Linear??? Confused

I've played more than 400 hours of Civ V, and never once had the same game. I've won handsomely, won by the skin of my teeth, got beat narrowly, and had my ass handed to me on a plate a few times, all different victories and losses, different locations, different tactics, each its own different game.

Linear? eh ...no.

the steam counter, says i've played 1090 hours so far... Razz i thinks it's more.
never had any linear issues. even as i ONLY play earth mods, and usually the same civs!!

you would never have same game playing cod either, that doesnt make each game somehow unique, different sure but this is civ we are talking about...
compare civ5 vs modded civ4, there is way more choice in civ4, yes comparing modded game to unmoded is a bit unfair, but it was 2k decision to screw modding for civ5 ..

So do you have to pick an "affinity" and then you're locked to that path or can you mix and match?

Three choices of how to develop yourself on an alien planet seems very little to me. Its flower power, robot people or just a basic human. I'd like to be an environmentalist but with high tech guns, which path do I choose?

Lookk like mixing is an option

They’ll choose an Affinity based on that or even create a hybrid of Affinities that gets them the best perks and stats for their current game.

Well the fuss is: Alpha Centauri and finally people getting something like it again (they can't use the name as far as I know).

LOL, I was expecting much more different view and not Earth with different tile colors, lol. Look at those farms, they look exactly like in Civ5, ROFL. Fucking shameful, tbh.

Civ V being linear? Fuck yeah it was linear. When it first came out, you really only had two scenarios: reloading until you got the starting position you wanted (which you could always win via the same steps) or sticking with whatever you got (which depending on resources and initial scouting, you could put into a "100 turns until checkmate" mode pretty much every time). There were a number of players who demonstrated this on the Civ forums and on Youtube, frankly I stopped playing until I finally came back after a shit-ton of patches and the Gods & Kings expansion. After that it was a lot better and more fun and a lot less linear, especially in multi-player.

As to "what is the big fuss," uh, what? Alpha Centauri was one of the best games ever made, and in my top 3 for PC games. That game changed my life...I won't get into the details as I did on another forum and people thought I was crazy, but long story short it got me to change my major in college to physics. Very Happy

TBH I don't think the people who are looking forward to this game care much about graphics (I know I don't). Even if it were to look like a recolored civ 5, as long as the mechanics are fresh and deep then it's a win.

This is the kind of game where I really dont care about "gen". Its all about gameplay. I'm really looking forward to this game. Very Happy

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

What would prettier graphics enhance for a game like this?

Civ V looked great already, I'm more interested in some deeper tinkering in the systems. Which they should have the time for now no? So they can't have an excuse on that part!

If it uses the Civ 5 engine you can bet your ass on that the mp will desync galore. It's funny how a triple A studio manages to fuck up more than Paradox did with EU4, which is an infinitely more complex game than Civ 5.
