Indeed. That and the Gears-size maps, coupled with the forced AI companion in single player just because the game is designed to play in co-op killed the feeble interest that I had . Why can't we have nice things.

Unreal Tournament 4. Epic. Do it. No, don't fuck around. Yes, you have a market for it. Yes, it will work. Do it.
I +1 your post to infinite and beyond but sadly I don't think they'll ever listen *sad panda*
Comparing UT3 to UT2k4 is near sacrilege, it really is. Nobody turned up to your server because UT3 was a massive disappointment in comparison to 2004 and 99.

I wasted $60 by getting the special edition. Holy fuck that was fucking horrible. One of the few worst purchases ever. Right next to Diablo 3.
To be honest they have a point. My fps period was TFC/cs with quake and ut as backups
Nowadays if it isn't cod or gears the kids don't give it a chance. We saw the demise of team fortress with the abomination that is TF2, which very tho insanely (sick to my stomach) popular is basically dumbed down shit at its core.
Hirez tried to bring back Tribes to what turned out to be a very niche market and albeit lost them a lot of money. UT will undoubtedly fail unless it is streamlined and dumbed down for console tards and even then it will fail to grab a share of the market or the attention of true pc gamers who were lucky enough to see the golden age of fps.
I for one am quite sure that if by any chance someone comes up with a true, polished, 100% PC oriented (unlike the UT3 abomination), old-shool first person shooter with no 'nextgen' gimmicks at all, attractive visuals, excellent netcode and lots of genuine contents (read: no silly DLCs/microtransactions), people will buy it. Maybe it won't sell 10 million of copies like any Titanduty clone, but the audience is still there, imo.
It's always been there, waiting for a game that doesn't want to come out either because publishers always aim to please everybody, even those who need to Google how to jump in a game, or simply because nobody is "brave" enough to try such a delicate move. Some talented developers from the old era should team up and start one of those kickstarters (assuming that they have good ideas, that is), I bet it would be pretty damn successful.
UT3 didn't add anything new, but it broke what worked well. Slower pace, less responsive controls, bad UI/server browser, vehicles felt out of the place at times (there were also several balance issues as far as I remember), lack of contents/game modes etc, imo of course.
I would love a digital download only UT4 that is a remake of UT99 or UT2K4, with select popular maps and a map editor for about $30.
Hmmm... that's about the only move I can see epic making, honestly.
I doubt that they still have anywhere near the talent working in there that they had in the UT99-UT2K4 era.

No, HiRez tried to bring it back to a market that wasn't looking for microtransaction crap. That same market didn't like how they completely ignored their playerbase too, not fixing some game breaking bugs and constantly screwing up the balance. Ascend didn't go well for all sorts of reasons, but not because it wasn't CoD. I got bored of it when they went ahead and screwed up half the weapons, making some maps just unplayable (and there weren't that many).
Demonstrating the incredible fidelity we have achieved using the Unreal Engine 4 from Epic games.
The entire scene is dynamic and dynamically lit. Each cabin light can be toggled and adjusted and anything that CAN move does. Arm rests extend, knobs turn, tray tables extend and even the sink in the lavatory works.

This was recorded on a PC with a i7 4770 and a GTX 670 @ 1080p. I would expect even greater fidelity from AAA games as this was made by four guys in their spare time in about a months time.
Incredibly impressive, though there's still some "wet" texture look on a lot of things.
And my point is if no one played UT3, then no one will play UT4.
Completely untrue, as being a competitive unreal tournament player I watched the community on irc go back to their respective games (2k4, 99, QuakeLive, CS). All the top competitive American players all came back to play the game. Hell, even Lotus started working on UTComp, but the fact is the core gameplay had been ruined, and also the game was very buggy upon release. And truth be told Digital Extremes is a big part of what made ut99/2k3/2k4 good games. Their involvement with UT3 was absolutely none.
Competitive Arena shooters are far from dead, but, truth be told. We're getting old guys, todays generation a lot of them have no clue about fast paced arena shooters, with map and item control. It needs to be re-introduced properly, and who know what that even means. We got an entire community of "pro gamers", who want bright skins hit sounds etc. (Quake, UT2k3/2k4 players) And then a group of "pro gamers" who don't want that shit (ut99 players, CS players). So this in itself is a problem.
Not many arena shooters have been popular outside Quake/Unreal style of gameplay... painkiller? But that felt like a slow version of quake. I think, we need something new if we want to keep this genre. That means true arena shooter gameplay at the core, no stupid gameplay modes (shootmania), no unneeded things such as vehicles. And a properly done beta that gains advice from the community (CSGO). And we might get a good arena shooter.
Especially if you pay attention when at the end of the such AMAZING OMG DEMO there is that table opens and closes and there is no reflected light on the nearby surface. CryEngine 3 could do that since release day.
